Six of Crows | Leigh Bardugo

I‘m gonna be totally honest about this first chapter. If I‘d made my decision whether to purchase this book based on the first two pages, I wouldn‘t have bought it. There are so many issues with those pages, and yet EVERYTHING after that is a different story. The way this chapter builds up to slap you in the face is brilliant. I‘m just hoping the rest of the book reflects everything after the first two pages and not the first two. #FingersCrossed

BillBlume For those wondering, my issues with the first two pages are Joost pining over Anya (that‘s not how teen boys think, not even close and she demonstrates his interest so much better during the stop at the Grisha workshop) and Joost looking at himself in the mirror (Seriously? He‘s already thinking about his appearance, so the glance in the mirror is redundant and amateurish (readers roasted 50 Shades for this same writer sin)). #SMH (edited) 5y

The Beauty Myth | Naomi Wolf

🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ I actually used to go to a church that believed (believes - they still do as far as I know) that if you were even an ounce over weight you had a food addiction and would send you to this Christian 12 step program called Celebrate Recovery. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ (as a side note, this emoji is getting A LOT of use in relation to this book)
#thebeautymyth #naomiwolf #smh

Crazeedi That church obviously wasn't truly a church. No believers in the good news would condemn another, that's not up to us. We welcome all since we all fall short 6y
GingerAntics @Crazeedi you clearly haven‘t been to Texas. 99% of being a member of a church is looking down on people who are not members of your church. That church is not even remotely close to the only one, and frankly, it‘s probably the majority of churches that find one way or another to create an us and them mentality. Your message is what gets people in the door. It‘s fear of being judged for leaving that keeps people in. 6y
GingerAntics @Crazeedi here is a link to the church I used to go to. https://fellowshipdallas.org It‘s probably not much different from the church most people go to. Every church has its thing. 6y

Crazeedi @GingerAntics I'm so sad to hear this, it is not that way with true followers, I'm so sorry there are places like that. No I don't live in Texas. I suggest you maybe keep looking. There are places that welcome all, after all a church is for those of us who are sick and know we need help. 6y
Crazeedi @GingerAntics I go to a very small church in a rural area, I'm sure there are churches like you say even here, but keep searching! You will be led! Many blessings! 6y
GingerAntics @Crazeedi oh don‘t worry, I‘m being led...right into a goddess religion where everyone is treated as a human. Me and Christianity have decided to see other people. 😉 6y
Crazeedi @GingerAntics I hope you find what you are looking for! 6y
Karisa 👀 🤣 6y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics ha here in alt right religion republican haven where I live it's the exact same . Ridiculous . No Jesus follower believes that nonsense . Christianity unfortunately has a terrible lack of people who know their own Christ. 6y
TheBookHippie I get on the daily "but you can't be a Jesus Feminist ...." wanna make a bet?!?! Ugh ignorance. 6y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie that‘s for sure!!! It‘s interesting how far off the original message they‘ve gotten. It‘s sad...and ridiculous. 6y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I don't engage anymore. I can worship anywhere. Doesn't need to be church. I've given up here in my town. 6y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie there is actually about about it. I ate it up. The truth of the matter is, Jesus was probably the first recorded feminist in western civilisation. MEN screwed it up. In fact, Constantine screwed it up when he insisted on mixing it with all his other beliefs so that he could “cover his bases” and make it the state Religion. 6y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie Modern Christians aren‘t even open to the facts of the original Jesus, so people like me (who know) are left wondering and are just condemned for wanting answers. It‘s easier to shut us up and condemn all history study than actually address how it was messed up and returning to the original message. Then again, anti-semitism would have to end then. 6y
TiredLibrarian @GingerAntics My MIL goes to a church with a Bod 4 God group, and this is in upstate NY. 🤔🙄 6y
GingerAntics @TiredLibrarian I thought the “bod” was sinful and should be abandoned/ignored at all costs? They‘re really sending a mixed message with that one. It‘s kind of creepy, too. 6y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics EXACTLY. Ugh people educated thyself. Boggles the mind. FYI my great grandma Jewish. ❤️ 6y
TheBookHippie Also I've read that book 5 times gifted it over and over 6y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie so you know Messiah is a HUMAN!!! Great!!! You may be the only one. I get why Jewish people get pissed at Christians for misappropriating their religious symbolism. 6y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie perfection!!! When I started it, it was really early and I couldn‘t sleep. I figured I‘d read a chapter or two and then fall back to sleep...then suddenly it was noon. lol Oops. 6y
TiredLibrarian @GingerAntics There must be different degrees of sinful bods, like Dante's circles of Hell, and fat bods are the most exceedingly sinful. How else do you make sense of an "anti-fat pastor"? ? 6y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics favorite happening -mind you in 2018 "but you don't look Jewish how can you have a Jewish hereditary blood anemia?"???‍♀️??‍♀️ 6y
GingerAntics @TiredLibrarian that explains it!!! 🧐🤣 6y
TheBookHippie @TiredLibrarian degrees of sinful bods 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣mic drop. 6y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🙄🙄🙄💥💥💥 I‘ve got nothing for that. You‘d think with all this access to knowledge, people would know what a stereotype was and why they‘re not helpful. 🤔🤔🤔 One would think. 6y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie that was pretty good about the degrees of sinful bodies. @TiredLibrarian So it‘s the seventh circle of sinful bodies to be fat. The first circle of sinful bodies is a perfect female body, I‘m guessing? 6y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics well now I want to read Dante again so there's that .. 6y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie are you going to replace all the sins with body types? I can‘t wait for this reading. Please do post about it. 6y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics seriously how fun would that be??? Now where to fit that in my reading plan 🤣🤣📚📚📚📚 6y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie 🤣😂🤣 oh I can‘t wait!!! 🤣😂🤣 I‘ve never read Dante, though I‘ve always wanted to. The issue of translations just gets my head spinning and I always say “later.” I may have to join you. 🤣😂🤣 6y
julesG The issue of translations is what keeps me from reading a lot of books. I know that a translation is an interpretation and I'd like to interpret a text myself not interpret the interpretation/translation. 6y
GingerAntics @julesG yeah, but most of us don‘t know enough italian or Latin to read this in the original. Those languages get really complicated, especially the more complicated the idea is. It‘s a matter of finding the closest translation that is still readable. This thing was written about 700 years ago. Even if you knew Latin or modern Italian you‘d need a translation. 6y
julesG I know! 😭😭😭 6y

#EmojiNov I‘m very grateful for my library‘s #OverDrive system because I‘m able to access books even though I‘m 6,000 miles away. However, I do get #😡 when I desperately want to read a book and it‘s NOT even in their system!!! I‘m still waiting for them to add these titles..... #booknerdproblems

Cinfhen No 😖😖 @kamoorephoto I made the request in August!!!! 😕😡😫 7y
Caterina I feel you! I recommended Difficult Women in January and Here Comes the Sun over one year ago, and neither has been added. There are so many popular books that they just won't add. 😩 It took one year for them to add The Wangs vs. the World! Also yet to be added: Bad Feminist, The Hate U Give, and The Remains of the Day. 😩 7y
See All 25 Comments
Cinfhen I think certain branches must have a bigger budgets because I‘ve seen others post where all their requests have been filled @Caterina but it‘s super frustrating for us readers! 7y
IheartYA My library annoys me with that too. It also allows us access to Hoopla and Freading. Maybe look into if your library supports those too. 7y
Cinfhen Thanks for the suggestion @IheartYA 💗 7y
LA_Mead I like interlibrary loan... 7y
IheartYA My city is small. ? I have put books on what we call "hold" and other libraries mail them to mine but there have been a few I can't find in the system at all. 7y
Tamra Me too. I live in a rural area & we have a small regional system - makes audio a challenge. Not much selection & high demand. With the technology,it should be a statewide system - we‘re a high tax rate state, so seems like it should be feasible & fair. 7y
Tamra I have a good condition used copy of Goodbye Vitamin that I‘m unlikely to get to in light years, I am happy to mail it to you. 😊 graham.eric@charter.net 7y
Karkar Not sure if @IheartYA and @Tamra are in the US, but when I lived in a small rural area. I found to get the best selection was to get a state library card- most state libraries have a much better selection! 7y
Mdargusch That is so interesting because sometimes the books I️ find are so obscure and then more mainstream books aren‘t available. #SMH 7y
Tamra @Karkar yes, I am in MN. I‘ll have to find out if there is a state card! 7y
Reviewsbylola Wow, surprised they don‘t have a lot of those! 7y
Cinfhen That's soooo sweet @Tamra I'd love it!!! Thank you sooo much 😍😘will email you!!! 7y
Cinfhen I will look into a state card too @Karkar thanks for the suggestion 😃 7y
Cinfhen When it comes to physical books @LA_Mead @Reviewsbylola @Mdargusch my library system is AWESOME but it's this OverDrive system which is pretty pathetic 7y
MarriedtoMrT It‘s a little known fact but ebooks tend to cost libraries WAY more than physical books, many times list price. This often means it can be too far out of budget for libraries to buy a single copy. https://www.wired.com/2013/10/how-ebook-pricing-hurts-us-in-more-ways-than-you-t... 7y
MarriedtoMrT From the article: “Take the example of J.K. Rowling‘s pseudonymous book, Cuckoo‘s Calling. For the physical book, libraries would pay $14.40 from book distributor Baker & Taylor -- close to the consumer price of $15.49 from Barnes & Noble and of $15.19 from Amazon. But even though the ebook will cost consumers $6.50 on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, libraries would pay $78 (through library ebook distributors Overdrive and 3M) for the same thing.” 7y
MarriedtoMrT I‘m not sure if that‘s why your requests haven‘t been answered but I always like to bring it up when I can because it is completely ridiculous and change won‘t happen until more people are aware and more people complain to elected officials so that gouging laws can be passed...though now there are certainly many, many other thing we need to talk to elected officials about. 7y
emilyhaldi Very surprised to see that some of those aren't available yet!! 7y
Mdargusch Thanks for shedding some light on the situation @MarriedtoMrT - that makes a lot of sense. 7y
Cinfhen Oh wow!!! That's ridiculous @MarriedtoMrT thanks for informing us 7y
LA_Mead @Cinfhen ah, yeah...Overdrive at mine is not so good either. Everything new is always reserved into infinity. 7y
Leftcoastzen I loved “New People .” 7y

I just unfollowed and blocked someone for the first time ever on here. I value the Litsy community for its kindness and warmhearted sharing of a common hobby. Shit talking other users (not me) because you didn't like the books they sent on a book swap is shitty. It's a swap, not a Secret Santa. If you expect someone to go out and buy you books, you're doing it wrong. Swap means to exchange something you have for something someone else has. #smh

NerdyRev That is crazy. Sorry that happened to you. 7y
athorne That's actually one of the reasons I don't hop in on these. I'm extremely particular about what I read and don't tend to leave others to pick my material. What if those were the only books said user thought valuable enough to send someone? I'm pretty livid I guess. I just don't like my safe place being invaded with assholes. 7y
Josie I'm sorry that happened! I've had to block a good amount of people on here for just being shitty in general. 7y
See All 53 Comments
athorne @NerdyRev Oh it wasn't to me. It was about another unnamed user. It was just such a shitty thing for one person to say to another. 7y
athorne @Josie Right?! It makes me even less likely to jump into these type of things. I'm paranoid by nature and I was raised under the "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" mantra. 7y
Josie @TheGhastlyGrimoire I'm the same way as far as not joining in on those because I want to pick what I read and when I read it. You have to give that up when you join those things, which is fine, if you can handle maybe receiving something you wouldn't read normally. 7y
athorne @Josie Exactly. And in the same breath, the user admitting to not being sorry with how she sent her package to the other one. I just don't get it. If you don't like the potential of someone reading you wrong, man up and step out of it. Don't make someone else feel like crap. If it was me, I'd be extremely hurt. I'm poor as fuck. With me, you get what you get. 7y
emily_m_tubb I think I've just seen the post you're talking about... its such a shame because most littens on here are genuine, nice people. 😃 I would appreciate anything I was given, and even if it turned out I didn't particularly enjoy the books, I'd still be incredibly grateful to make a connection with someone 😁 7y
julesG @emily_m_tubb I think I saw the post, too. I was about to leave a comment, but then I just blocked this person. How can someone be so selfish and nasty? If you don't like what is in the swap-box, you still say Thank you, because someone made an effort to choose something for you. You could ask, whether it's okay to pay the books forward, since they don't fit your reading choice. There is absolutely no reason for such a nasty post. 7y
TrishB It was a horrible post. Blocked too. 7y
That-Bookish-Hiker I read your post and then right under was said person. Not cool ☹️ makes me sad for the person who was the swap buddy. I unfollowed and blocked too. I'm like you, I'm come to Litsy for my safe place. I love the book friends I made on here who are all so kind and big hearted. 7y
DarcysMom I saw the post. It was incredibly disheartening - it was the first time I read something so negative on this site. I blocked the user, too. I feel very protective of the positive space that is my experience here. 7y
teebe That's horrible. I just don't get this person. Even if you don't like what you're getting, you're getting free stuff that someone took the time to package and pay to send to you. I'm searching out this post so I can block that person too. 7y
tapgurl Right. Just pay it forward. Donate to a little free library or a thrift store. 7y
athorne @julesG Exactly. I almost did as well, but realized I had absolutely nothing nice to say. 7y
Chasing_Pages Unfollowed as well!! People put time and effort into sending you something. Some people are so rude and ungrateful! 7y
Josie @TheGhastlyGrimoire soooo. I'm interested to know who this person is. But I won't ask you to reveal identity. Maybe just tell me which book it was posted under? 😉 7y
athorne @Josie I don't even remember the title of the book. It had asshole in it, that's all I can recall. 7y
Josie @TheGhastlyGrimoire hahahaha I can work with that. 7y
Alicia Ugh I totally agree. I did the same thing. It's that sort of thing that freaks me out cause Litsy is so safe I don't want it to turn into an unsafe space. I feel like it is a gesture of kindness no matter what someone sends, that just such a shitty attitude. 7y
teebe @Josie tag the title if you find it? I've searched under the book swap tags and can't find it. Maybe they deleted it? 7y
Josie @teebe I couldn't find it either! It's possible that they deleted it. 7y
JSW Uggghhhhh that sucks! This is my safe space too, and I hate when people don't appreciate generosity. I love the swaps and exchanges (when I have time and money) because it's like a puzzle trying to think of what to pick for someone. The three swapees I've had are some of my fave Littens now. 😢😒😡🤧 Sending affirming and consensual hugs to all of us. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ (edited) 7y
Josie @Ms_T do you know which book it was posted under? 7y
Josie @Ms_T I must have already blocked this person because all I see is a post from 6 months ago and it's really sweet and cute. Not crazy. I can't remember who I have blocked 😂😂 7y
WarpedSweetness I came across it awhile ago and couldn't believe what I read. So I took a screenshot and showed it to my fiancee... 7y
Rachellynnwright Found this person under the book title and blocked them! I agree, Litsy should be a safe place for everyone. We have all taken the time to post positive and supportive words to one another which has shaped the wonderful community we have now! 7y
babblebabble @Rachellynnwright so weird. When I look at the book page, I don't see any negative posts. Just two from a few months ago. 7y
TrishB @babblebabble the person is private so you won't see their posts unless your friends. 7y
babblebabble @TrishB oh, okay thanks! 7y
Rachellynnwright @babblebabble this user is private, so if you weren‘t already following her then her posts won‘t show up for you. I really don‘t feel comfortable sharing the username... sorry :/ 7y
babblebabble @Rachellynnwright don't apologize! I understand. And since I don't follow them anyway, I have nothing to worry about!! 7y
Josie @Ms_T that makes sense. Well, at least I don't have to concern myself with them! 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘ve never seen anything negative! I‘m rarely on any other social media site for this reason!! 7y
Josie So, I found the person, and I cannot believe it. I have never seen something like this on Litsy. I don't know who her swap partner was, but I really hope they aren't letting this get to them. 7y
athorne @Josie Likewise. I'd be crying. 7y
Josie @TheGhastlyGrimoire I would be too! Especially because I know how it feels to join one of those things and not be able to make it as wonderful as you imagine because you can't afford it. At least this person TRIED. They spent time and energy to do the best they could. 7y
OrangeMooseReads I just saw the post you are speaking of. I‘ve unfollowed and blocked them as well. What was said was incredibly sh*tty. 7y
AndreaReads Same @OrangeMooseReads I also flagged the post. 7y
ptkpepe98 So sorry to read all of this, and truthfully, really surprised because this community of readers tends to be positive and supportive about even books that weren't appealing. So to hear that someone was rude about a book swap is sad. Hopefully it's an anomaly for the person who complained. S/he was having a bad day and regrets it in hindsight. 7y
WarpedSweetness I forgot to remove this person from my friend list...I came back to Litsy during a down moment at work to more posts about this swap in my feed. :-/ The person also didn't have nice things to say about the person who organized the swap. 7y
MyNamesParadise Ugh the Trumpets have invaded Litsy 😡. It must've been deleted because I didn't see it when I clicked on the book the post was under. (edited) 7y
athorne @WarpedSweetness Yeah. It was pretty disappointing. 7y
WarpedSweetness @MyNamesParadise It hasn't been deleted, and there are more posts. It is sad. @TheGhastlyGrimoire Litsy is such a welcoming and non-judgmental community. Those posts reminded me of other social media and that was disheartening. 7y
minkyb I have no clue who this discussion is about but I find it incredibly sad. 7y
dariazeoli I wish I had flagged the post before I unfollowed. "I'm honest, deal with it" doesn't justify that shittiness. It's reactions like that person's that make me anxious about participating in swaps. If I had been the match I'd be crushed. 7y
SconsinBookyBadger I have no idea who‘s all involved in this book swap, but I hope the person who was insulted is receiving some support from the litsy community. It's soul crushing to have to experience something like that. (edited) 7y
Litsi Book swap? 7y
melbeautyandbooks That's awful. I haven't seen anything like that here on Litsy. It is such a safe and welcoming space. 7y
eri.reads I think I just saw some of the same posts and unfollowed the same person right before I saw your post. It's just really sad to have someone act that way. No words... 7y
eri.reads FYI, I did flag the post and block her as well. Hopefully others who saw the post did the same also. 7y
BookNAround I haven't seen it and don't want to because the whole idea of it makes me sad. 7y

Looking at my shelves for something to post for #setinasmalltown and not seeing anything, I realize that my current read will count! #smh #photoadaynov2016. Maybe the suburbs of Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill are not quite small towns but the village the Main Character visits in England must count, I hope.
