Queer, There, and Everywhere
Queer, There, and Everywhere: 22 People Who Changed the World | Sarah Prager
This first-ever LGBTQ history book for young adults will appeal to fans of fun, empowering pop-culture books like Rad American Women A-Z and Notorious RBG. World history has been made by countless lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individualsand youve never heard of many of them. Queer author and activist Sarah Prager delves deep into the lives of 22 people who fought, created, and loved on their own terms. From high-profile figures like Abraham Lincoln and Eleanor Roosevelt to the trailblazing gender-ambiguous Queen of Sweden and a bisexual blues singer who didnt make it into your history books, these astonishing true stories uncover a rich queer heritage that encompasses every culture, in every era. By turns hilarious and inspiring, the beautifully illustrated Queer, There, and Everywhere is for anyone who wants the real story of the queer rights movement.

While yes, this was an entertaining and informative read, they author uses the phrase “changed the world” extremely loosely. I mean, I wouldn‘t exactly count one trans Roman emperor who “turned the castle into a brothel where she was the only one doing it” and ended up accomplishing nothing politically (it literally says that) world changing. They completely ignored others who actually did stuff. And while we‘re speculating on world changing ⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️ Queer people (Abraham Lincoln was also in here), what about Alexander Hamilton? He actually did stuff for the world. Or David Bowie, for bi representation. Nice plan, sloppy execution. 3⭐️ 3y

Question of the Day: You're gonna keep reading queer books even though June is over, right? #QotD

We don't just exist one month a year, so include us in your TBRs year round.⁣

This is the same for reading BIPOC books, disability books, mental health books, et cetera - educate yourself all the time, not just when a certain minority is hyped.⁣

Happy National Coming Out Day 💝

I'm Claire and I'm genderqueer & bi. I'm open to most folks about being bi but I've kept the genderqueer aspect kind of quiet because most folks don't get nonbinary identity and I don't feel like being hassled 24/7. I trust you guys 💜 thanks for making Litsy so welcoming to being openly queer. I'm not afraid here.

Bookriot has gone all out for today, so there's a link below ⬇️ that leads to one of many articles:

This is an amazing introduction to queer history, and so worth the read. Downloading the author's queer history app now, and I hope she is able to put out a sequel.

Definitely recommended for any kids or adults looking for an intro to LGBTQ+ folks throughout history.

Stayed up way too late to finish this one. While it was clearly written for teen readers, I did enjoy the voice of this accessible and quick nonfiction on LGBT leaders and activists. It could have used more diversity, the “everywhere” wasn‘t well represented but it was interesting and informative.

This book is okay. I appreciate what it is attempting, but was left feeling unsatisfied after reading it.
For being a history book about many different LGBTQ individuals it was remarkably light on history. Each person was granted only eight pages on average. I feel like a more extensive coverage of the subjects would have been better, and I am required to do further research myself if I want to learn more about them.
A good book for what it is.

This could be better, but I can appreciate it for what it is. Drawbacks: majority Americans (14/23) despite claims of "world" (others are European or Mexican, no where else is represented); only 7 POC; only 5 (6?) bi people; only 6 trans people (incl. 1 non-binary). Those limitations aside, I enjoyed the write-ups and mostly thought they were fascinating and well aimed at a younger YA audience, albeit a bit of "adult trying to sound hip" writing.

Just had a look ahead in this anthology and it appears 14 out of 23 people are American, so..."everywhere" is, uh, a bit of a stretch. It looks like the rest are European or Mexican but I will confirm after reading! I mean, it's fine if the book is limited to the US, Mexico, and Europe, but it'd better to just acknowledge that rather than imply anything else by saying "world" and "everywhere" in the title.

A lot of information here. Some of the writing seems a little pandering but otherwise not bad.

Absolutely a must read to cheerfully smash the misconception that queer people are a recent development in human history. Even when the histories have a tragic bent, Prager manages to tell them optimistically and in such a way that these lives will empower teens.

This is what our reviewer had to say about #QueerThereandEverywhere by #SarahPrager "QUEER, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE had a fun tone throughout the book, which makes it succeed where quite a few history books do not....each figure‘s essay is interesting and comprehensive...."

TW: misgendering, deadnaming, casual amisia.

An interesting book covering some well-known queer people in history. I do wish it had been a little more inclusive. I'd have much rather read about disabled queer people, more QPOC like Marsha P. Johnson, Janet Mock, Kalki, etc. than speculate about Eleanor Roosevelt or Abe Lincoln. I do appreciate the reference list at the end of the book, which I will be checking out.

This could also be Q for my #litsyAtoZ which I have not even begun to organize yet, lol.

A nice quick read. The historic figures mentioned, there's no yes or no about their sexualities for sure and I wish they had mentioned that act. Most of the modern people mentioned were the obvious ones. So yeah, a bit disappointed but if you don't much about queer history, than pick it up.
