Finished the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge!

This book is a biography about a girl named Judy Heumann. She has been such an inspiration to disability people all around the world. She fought most of her life to get her voice heard and advocate for those who were disabled and not able to go to school. She only felt included at a summer camp for the disability. She made connections and made herself known to the state and federal government about getting changes made for disability people.

“All they were hearing was NO! NO! NO!“ This quote shows how Judith was being discriminated against.

I think that this is a really cool book. It has both young adult reading and young readers coming together and meshing with the pictures and with the information in the text. I recommend this book to students who are learning about activism.

This biography is about the life of Judith Heumann and all their accomplishments in activism for those with disabilities. This book is presented as a picture chapter book and the illustrations are done in a collage-like way which adds a lot to the the information of the book.

4 ⭐This was a great biography of Judith human. Judith was the main drive-in getting disability laws passed that made sure that people with any type of disability have the same freedoms as those with no disabilities. It would ensure that anyone or any entity, who receives money from the federal government, must make things ADA or handicapped accessible. This is a fantastic biography because it points out all the time Judith was told no.

4 ⭐This picture book is a history of the man who helped make the 1963 March On Washington the event it was. Bayard Rustin was a Black gay man who put his heart into peaceful protest. He had learned from Gandhi that peaceful protest was the only real way to get your voice heard, and to make things happen. He was successful and the March On Washington was a success. He‘s a little-known player in this big event that I am happy now gets his own stage.

Beautiful book about the illustrious life of Zitkala-Sa.
So much information packed into this picture book, enhanced by the delicious and warm-hearted art of Gina Capaldi.

I found a lot to love about this book. I could really relate to the family dynamic. I'm glad I read the Devil's Arithmetic first. It gave this book another level of wow. I don't live in an area where book banning is a problem. The community where the story took place seemed surreal to me, maybe too, phony. But then I need to get out more. Having an HOA is bad enough, I can't imagine a whole town putting up with this.
