This just didn‘t fulfill its potential, in my opinion, and I feel like 40% through is a fair shake. The characters felt really surface-level, and the situations were more silly than entertaining. The book felt more like a series of loosely connected short stories that weren‘t that great — this may be a translation issue, or maybe this one just isn‘t for me. There are just a lot of books I‘d rather be reading.

Deep deep dive into the Kindle for this one — just about (not quite tho) the oldest unread book on there. I hope it is as fun as it sounds!

Quick, somewhat entertaining read.
While the plot is fun and entertaining, the narration is repetitive, far from subtil, and caricatural. So it gets old fast (pun intended).

Martha, at age 79, wants some changes in her life and decides to commit a white collar crime with her friends at the retirement house who will help her. The scenes were unrealistic, absurds, but funny. However, I think it was too long with unnecessary scenes. Sometimes i just felt bored. 3 ⭐️

September Book Club Book!

Martha is astonished to see that prison conditions appear to be better than those in her Swedish retirement home after watching a documentary. So she and her friends decide to commit a crime to try to get into prison. This is rather slow to start, but it ended up being a fun, funny book that my mom and I enjoyed together—I read it to her in installments.

Bailing at 20%. Based on the reviews of others, this may be a case of being lost in translation. I'm just so horribly bored. The one part I found really funny is when the MC talks about how she wanted her friends group to buy an old mansion with a moat for their retirement. That way, when the police or family members came to pester them, they could just lift the drawbridge.

This one took me a while to get through. I kept putting it down between chapters and not really excited to pick it back up. Glad I finished it as it reminded me of our time in Stockholm and on the ferry between Finland and Sweden - minus the crimes. As I was reading it, we were visiting my MIL in a nursing home and wishing she had the same level of energy as Martha.

I couldn‘t finish this one. It‘s about a group of older people who try to do crime to prove they‘re smart, but they‘re just written as being so silly that I can‘t follow it. I think it‘s just not for me.

I have to finish my library books before starting on the new Marlon James! Finished this call to arms for independent seniors disguised as a caper comedy. A group of disgruntled but very genteel seniors at an old age home revolt against cutbacks in staff and services. Their solution: kidnapping Rembrandt and Monet paintings for ransom, bank robberies and high jinks to create a fund so that retirement homes have as high standards as Scandi prisons!

After loving Ove but discovering that he was younger than I thought, I listened to this book with five friends from a nursing home who embark on a life of crime. They are all over 70- so I feel better about completing this prompt of #Booked2018 !! Unfortunately, the book wasn‘t as hilariously charming as I expected... but it was fun to #audiocolor in my Golden Girls coloring book while listening! 😊

I needed something to pick up my mood, so I picked up a book (of course). The dog thinks it‘s the right choice.

Martha and her singing cronies, the Vocal Chord AKA The League of Pensioners are fed up with Nurse Barbara and her miserly ways. They have some really good ideas on making life better for themselves and other retirees. They inspire the others of Diamond House to live better. I like them and look forward to reading more about their adventures.

Love these Pensioners from Sweden who decide they need fun, rebellion and money to live comfortably! They pull off heists, set things to rights and survive harrowing situations because no one thinks the oldies are capable! Such fun as an audiobook- I will be reading the next 2 #24in48 @24in48

#24in48 3 hours in to this audiobook and loving the narration and what entertaining senior citizens! Great choice for a start! Using a countdown timer this time so set it for 12 hours today! @24in48

Honestly, I only picked this up to complete a task on the #readharder challenge, I never expected to enjoy it so much. Listening to it as an audiobook, the readers accent added so much to the story, in my opinion. So much fun and the League of Pensioners fought a fight worth having and bringing attention to all around the world. It's ridiculous the money spent on jails when education and the elderly see so little.

My afternoon work plans changed, so I went to McNally Robinson and bought my brand new book for March. It's Swedish and I've never heard much about it despite its bestseller status, so it fit my mission parameters. I'll share it with my dad when I'm done.

I also got ink for my fancy fountain pen. They had over a dozen colours for under $10, so I'm sure I'll be back for another bottle as soon as this one runs out.

LOOK at this novel I found at Third Place Books! A Scandinavian novel about a woman in a nursing home who goes on a crime spree. If it's half as good as the cover, I'm in for a treat. And there are two more!

Spurred on by a feisty octogenarian a group of retirement home friends manage to steal valuable works of art, ransoms it back to the museum, run away from their facility and rob an armored truck. Just slightly fanciful but a quick mindless read if that is what you are looking for in the moment.

With my power out, there's no wifi which means no working from home so I feel like I'm breaking some rules today too.

This book is about senior citizens who turn to crime after getting sick of the declining quality of their retirement home (really, that's the type of senior I aspire to be one day). I wanted to love this book & I did like it in a way, but ultimately I had difficulty getting into the story (perhaps due to the translation). The middle of the book also got pretty dull & I had a hard time believing that any police dept. is that incompetent.

With a #libraryhaul like this, you know it's going to be a great day!

This audiobook is a delight. I see my future and I'm taking notes. 😂🤣😂

I was disappointed in the writing and the plots. It might be a translation thing for the writing, but I found the plot holes irritating. I read through half the book and then skimmed my way to the end. The book actually has 3 heists, and only one of them really works. The main characters are ok; but the side plots are kind of just tacked on and there's no emotional investment into the side characters.
