Countdown City: The Last Policeman | Ben H. Winters
29 posts | 43 read | 31 to read
"[The] weird, beautiful, unapologetically apocalyptic Last Policeman trilogy is one of my favorite mystery series."John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars and Paper TownsWinner of the 2014 Philip K. Dick AwardThe Last Policemanreceived the 2013 Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original--along with plenty of glowing reviews. Now Detective Hank Palace returns in Countdown City, the second volume of the Last Policemantrilogy. There are just 77 days before a deadly asteroid collides with Earth, and Detective Palace is out of a job. With the Concord police force operating under the auspices of the U.S. Justice Department, Hank's days of solving crimes are over...until a woman from his past begs for help finding her missing husband. Brett Cavatone disappeared without a tracean easy feat in a world with no phones, no cars, and no way to tell whether someones gone bucket list or just gone. With society falling to shambles, Hank pieces together what few clues he can, on a search that leads him from a college-campus-turned-anarchist-encampment to a crumbling coastal landscape where anti-immigrant militia fend off impact zone refugees. Countdown City presents another fascinating mystery set on brink of an apocalypse--and once again, Hank Palace confronts questions way beyond "whodunit." What do we as human beings owe to one another? And what does it mean to be civilized when civilization is collapsing all around you?

Continuing my year of random reading, I finally read book 2 in The Last Policeman series. 5 ⭐️
A noir-style detective story set at the end of the world. What do you do and how do you live when the world is ending all around you? This seemingly simple, fast-paced book takes on those questions and more.

An asteroid is fast approaching that will destroy earth (but not yet, this is book 2 of 3) and now former cop Hank Palace is trying to help a friend find her husband. Not really the book for now, but my summer reading challenge is about finishing series I'd started. And in some ways I guess it is, because it features a white cop trying to navigate a world where power structures no longer include him. ...

ReadingEnvy What was formerly considered crime happens in the open, and some acts of compassion are viewed as crimes. His sister is working inside a passionate group of anarchists, and while Hank is trying to help people, he really just wants a good cup of coffee....

While the world is plummeting into chaos, one former policeman is still trying to find missing persons, as well as keeping an eye on his sister. With a deceased drug dealer‘s dog as his sidekick, Detective Henry Palace must separate fact from conspiracy in order to find and protect the people he cares about. Definitely looking forward to the third, and final installment.

Book two of The Last Policeman Trilogy was excellent. It is 77 days till an asteroid destroys the earth . The infrastructure of the world is crumbling. People are losing hope and losing sanity. But Hank is intent on solving his missing persons case. A dystopian police procedural 🤔

vivastory I loved this series 6y

Perhaps I shouldn't look at my Kindle deals in the early morning because I just bought books 2&3 of the Last Policeman trilogy, about a cop trying to maintain order at the end of the world. I read and liked book 1 ages ago. https://amzn.to/2wG0NzA

A solid follow-up to The Last Policeman, this book continues to follow Hank Palace as he tries to eke out a somewhat normal existence as the world falls apart around him. I think the gradual disintegration of infrastructure and civility is depicted realistically with 3 months left before asteroid collision. I‘m looking forward to the final book.

A spot of reading in bed before getting ready to see my husband at the hospital. He is recovering well, and hopefully will come home by the end of next week. I‘m grateful. I‘m on leave from work to better take care of him, myself, and to prepare for him to come home. Today though, I‘m feeling sad because I should be on a plane to see my family in Switzerland for Christmas. 🎄😔#pitypartyofone

CocoReads Glad he‘s doing well but it is sad when you can‘t be with family for the holidays. Hugs. 7y

Despite the impending end of the world, Henry is on a mission - to find his former babysitter's missing husband. This trilogy is excellent, both for its micro mystery as well as the arcing doom. Also, it's a great travel book.

BoldCityBooks How was The Last Policeman? It's on my Kindle but I haven't read it yet. 8y
Well-ReadNeck @optojake Good. But, I'm on book 2 now, and the overarching story is the most compelling part. I'm glad they are all available! 8y

I don't usually read books in a series close together - I like to move on to another book/world/story because I want to read everything.

But there is something about Det. Hank Palace and the world of this series that is so compelling, I can't put off book 2 any longer!

BookishMarginalia They are so good! 8y

2017 #16 Pre Apocolyptic eBook I want to date Hank Palace and hug Ben Winters. I love this series for its simple story, well written world, flawed human characters surviving in fantastical times. Even better than the first. For a fictional book it leaves my emotions weighted with "what would I do" and my heart breaks at what may befall us if and when the world goes to pieces. +

Pre-apocalyptic mystery ✅

RanaElizabeth I love this series so much. Such great philosophical questions for a police procedural. 8y
SusanInTiburon Oooo, sounds juicy! 8y
susanw If you're loving this series I would recommend his new book. Although a totally different book, it has the same noir-y gritty feel. 8y

This is why I love the protagonist of Winters' The Last Policeman trilogy: his no-nonsense pragmatism, even in the face of the upcoming asteroid strike that will decimate Earth.

MrBook Ooh, I want to read this trilogy!!! 8y

Great second book that's different enough from the first to hold its own (but you should still read The Last Policeman first). I'd say that I can't wait to read the final installment, but in a cruel twist of fate it looks like I'll have to because someone else already has it checked out-aargh!
