How can one not rate an Agatha Christie mystery anything but 5 stars? And especially with Hercule Poirot as the detective. I particularly love the cleverness of his mysteries. I was fooled right up to the end. Of course, I always picture David Suchet as Hercule Poirot, which just added to my delight in reading this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thoroughly enjoyable Hercule Poirot mystery. I guessed part of the denouement but not all of it! It was an original set up which i really liked. My favourite is still The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. And here are some autumn leaves for you from the Sunday markets 🍃🍂🍁

What's this?

Another challenge for 2024?

*YOINK*

Don't mind if I do 😋😁

Only question is... what do I do about books that start with The? Are they T's or do they count for other letters... 🤔

Bookish_Viking I tend to disregard the 3 Article words (“the”, “a”, and “an” only) using the first letter of the next word. 8mo

This was a good one. It had me guessing right to the end. If you like Poirot mysteries this is a good one to read. I love them all so I might be bias, however I flew through this one so quickly. It was a very quick read. Also I just read that John Malkovich does a mini series with this book. Might try and watch it. PS. Love this old book cover.

Classic Christie. I don‘t usually read her Poirot books as I‘ve seen them so many times as tv series or movies. I enjoyed this especially the bits written in the voice of Hastings. Classic crime.

Christie really shines in this one! A look at Poirot searching for a public serial killer instead of investigating a private murder, there were lots of twists & turns and when you think you know, ya don‘t know.

I really enjoyed this Christie. It follows the formula, but with enough little twists to make it a bit different from the usual. I really like the metaphor of the pin and pin cushion, which I don't think is a spoiler, but I am ridiculously bad about accidentally spoiling things so apologies if I just ruined this book for you.

ImperfectCJ And this novel reminded me of something I learned just recently: that there are places in the UK that are faster to get to by train than by car, which blows my US-born-and-raised mind. 3y

3. Many contemporary reviewers considered this one of Christie's best, and current lists also rank this within her top 10. How do you think this stacks up against her best novels?

#agathachristieclubR2

Laughterhp I won‘t be able to completely judge until I‘ve read all her books. This one isn‘t my favorite but it‘s definitely up there right now. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I think this one is really well plotted with a clever twist. Setting up that poor guy to take the fall is also a creepy/well done part of the story. I'm not sure it's my all-time favorite, but it's definitely a solid entry. @Laughterhp 3y
ferskner @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks yeah I would agree - not my #1, but probably top 10? Interestingly, David Suchet and Hugh Fraser both consider this a favorite. 3y
Linsy @Laughterhp @ferskner @TheAromaofBooks I don't think I'd rank this in my personal top 10 Christies, but I can definitely see why it's so highly recommended. Definitely seems like a solid rec for most readers! 3y

2. Christie uses techniques typically seen in thrillers rather than mysteries in this book. Can you identify how this book is different than her typical Poirot novels? (If not, I'll tell you!) Did you enjoy this difference?

#agathachristieclubR2

ferskner I kind of answered this in question 1, but at first it frustrated me to know who did it because that's not really how mysteries work, but then of course Christie knows better than I do and is just messing with me! 3y

1. Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not?

#agathachristieclubR2

bthegood I did enjoy this book, but in my review I didn't mention why specifically. The mystery was good and it was interesting in terms of how it was written - a serial killer that is taunting Poirot (if I remember correctly?) 3y
Laughterhp I enjoyed this one too. I first read it in 2018, so this was a reread. This time I‘m listened on audio and really enjoyed it. I remembered a little of who the killer was but not specifically, so it didn‘t ruin the story for me. @bthegood 3y

TheAromaofBooks Like @Laughterhp this was a reread for me. I remembered who the “actual“ victim was but couldn't exactly remember who killed them. This one definitely does an amazing job of scattering red herrings everywhere haha @bthegood 3y
ferskner @bthegood @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks I feel the same way - I really like this one. I think Christie is tricky with playing with the suspense device of knowing who the killer is from the beginning (the difference I mentioned in question 3 but then turns it on its head! 3y

Ughhhhhhhhhh #agathachristieclubR2 friends, I've super let you down. I read this book back in October and then promptly got so overwhelmed with committee work until January that I never posted questions. Between that, work, and travel, I've never gotten caught up, and I'm sorry for that. Can we reset? ⬇️

ferskner I'll still be busy with committee work this year, but I have a better grasp on it now. That means I can gauge my responsibilities better. I'll need to take occasional months off when we're judging, but who doesn't mind a break now and then?

I'm posting discussion questions in posts following this one. Nothing too detailed because I know everyone read it months ago!

These are my most read authors of all time. What are yours?

ChaoticMissAdventures Wow! Look at all that Christie! I tend to read people who only have a handful of books out. My goal this year though is to read all of Toni Morrison, and more Christie, Rowling is towards the middle of my list with her 7 HP book I read decades ago and I want to push her off with better people! 3y
Cazxxx @ChaoticMissAdventures My parents had all the Christie books so my obsession started very young! I have a lot of authors I love and read all their books. I‘ve never read anything by Toni Morrison but keep meaning to and must be one of the only people not to have read any Harry Potter 😄 3y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Cazxxx I was a bookseller when the HP all came out and it felt like a requirement then. Honestly they are not writing well, so glad you saved yourself!! I only started tracking books in 2012, I probably have read most of early Grisham's I was obsessed with him in highschool. But my memory is so bad I don't remember that far back to count them 😂 3y
Cazxxx @ChaoticMissAdventures I really do t feel I missed out on anything not reading them. It‘s very hard to remember books from way back but they pop into my head and I add them to goodreads and StoryGraph, it‘s taken me ages to build them both up. My memory isn‘t great either 😅 3y

Another lovely mystery by Madame Christie. I'm always so impressed that each time she has a new way to tell a story. In this one, Poirot receives letters from an ABC telling him of his plans for murder. Each victim's name starts with the same letter as the town they live in. Hastings is back to visit this time, which I always enjoy. And as he recounts the story, he adds in the perspective of ABC throughout. It's an interesting dynamic.

SolaRaynor Sounds awesome! I've read a few Poirot mysteries, I'll have to keep an eye out for this one :) 3y

It had been a while since I read this one, so while I had a vague memory of one of the twists, I couldn't exactly remember how it all came together. I really enjoyed the pacing here, although having the little group of relatives of the victims decide to come together and "help" with the case did feel slightly contrived lol Still good fun here. 4.5/5 - This is the most fun installment of the Poirot mysteries that I‘ve read to this point! I almost feel guilty for having doubted Agatha Christie and all of the fans that claim that this is among the best of the series. Around 85% of the way through the book, it looked like things were headed for a rather pedestrian end….until the big reveal!

#bookspinbingo

jewright I always mean to read some Agatha Christie, and I haven‘t. 3y
JoeMo @jewright I was the same way until I finally started reading some of her work about two years ago. Her books have a bit more substance than modern “cozy mysteries” while still being rather brisk and lighthearted compared to grittier thrillers. I read them when I want a break from darker stuff. (edited) 3y
bthegood @JoeMo this sums her writing up perfectly - I have recently started reading more of her work - and I do enjoy it (nice break from intense thrillers/mystery and cozy mysteries). 👍 😊 3y
TheAromaofBooks Like anyone with such a huge number of published works, Christie has her ups and downs, but overall I'm rarely disappointed when I pick one up. And some of them are delightfully humorous. 3y

I listened to the BBC Dramatization (though I didn‘t grab it on purpose), which is usually better for me than the books. I‘ve found that many of these “golden age” (and earlier) mysteries just aren‘t my thing. I liked the premise behind it, but this one still (even the dramatization) didn‘t hold my attention well enough to follow everything. It may have been better (for me) than reading the actual book, though

Poirot and Hastings are my least favorite Christie characters. They both drive me insane. However, I found this mystery to be delightful. I do find myself thinking “well, that was predictable” because I forget that Christie is the original. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Regardless of whether you figure out the whodunnit or you remain as clueless as Hastings, this is still one of the better Poirot stories, IMO, with great secondary characters.
