The Gargoyle
The Gargoyle | Andrew Davidson
An extraordinary debut novel of love that survives the fires of hell and transcends the boundaries of time. On a burn ward, a man lies between living and dying, so disfigured that no one from his past life would even recognize him. His only comfort comes from imagining various inventive ways to end his misery. Then a woman named Marianne Engel walks into his hospital room, a wild-haired, schizophrenic sculptress on the lam from the psych ward upstairs, who insists that she knows him that she has known him, in fact, for seven hundred years. She remembers vividly when they met, in another hospital ward at a convent in medieval Germany, when she was a nun and he was a wounded mercenary left to die. If he has forgotten this, he is not to worry: she will prove it to him. And so Marianne Engel begins to tell him their story, carving away his disbelief and slowly drawing him into the orbit and power of a word he'd never uttered: love. From the Hardcover edition.

I did it! I finished it! I swear every time I picked it up 10 pages were added to the end. Whew. I didn‘t hate it, some of it was quite good, but it felt like it was 2000 pages and I‘d been reading it for years. @Roary47 @LitStephanie @Littlewolf1 I sent it out in the mail today! #lmpbc

2.5✨I was expecting more than this book offered. The story was a good one about a burn victim that comes to terms with their limitations while making really good friends with a woman has depth. She is a masonry artist who carves gargoyles because they speak to her inside the stone. I would say I liked the medieval parts of this story more than the real time. I didn‘t hate it, but I probably will not read it again. Read for #LMPBC #GroupD

Roary47 @Lauranahe I‘ll be sending it Friday when I get paid. I‘m sorry for my delay. 😭 3y

Strange tale of a formerly hedonistic man burned in a horrible accident who tries to heal with the help of a possibly crazy woman. Involves medieval history and Dante, etc. I liked it mostly, but it's a little sexist.

Have any of you heard of this book before now! I hadn‘t until someone recommended it on a Facebook bookclub page. What a story! What an imagination this author has! Don‘t let the way it starts turn you off, as it almost did to me. It describes a horrible car crash in detail, In which the driver is terribly burnt. The places that this book will take you! Just as it was recommended to me, I‘m recommending it to all of you. It‘s very good!

This book was enthralling. I really enjoyed the story of the nun that was told to our narrator. The time spent in the burn unit was also very interesting to me.

I felt the story faltered when the narrator was traveling through the levels of hell, in a journey similar to Dante‘s. It became a bit ponderous and boring.

The ending was what I expected. There were horrific images throughout, but none of the fear of horror novel. A unique book.

Ok, not sure if pic is clear but 20 options for #bookspin with @TheAromaofBooks. Half fiction and half non fiction. Fantastic idea for getting through some of the books collecting dust. Having said that, there's a couple in here I really hope don't get picked!

ElaineR @TheAromaofBooks umm not sure what a reminder tag is but I'm hoping it goes a little something like this! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Yes, perfect!! Thank you so much for tagging me again and for joining the #BookSpin!! So sorry that I missed you the first time around - last month I had like 10 people participate and this month I am over a hundred so I had to make some adjustments!! Anyway, fabulous list, and as a side note, my main goal for this challenge is just to get a book off the TBR, so even if you start a book and decide it isn't for you, it still counts as complete ⬇ 5y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) for the sake of the challenge because that book is no longer on your TBR! I know not everyone can DNF books, but those are my “official“ rules 😆 I'll be sure to tag you with the lucky number tomorrow!! 5y

ElaineR @TheAromaofBooks No worries. Good it's taken off and don't worry, I have no problem with giving up on books. I learned many moons ago that there are way too many good books out there to put up with a bad one. The ones I'm hoping you don't pick are more to do with density lol. I have hundreds of TBRs on the shelves so getting any of them read is going to be glorious. #bookspin is a great idea. 5y
TheAromaofBooks haha That makes sense - I tend to procrastinate on the dense books as well - I've been 2/3 through a book about Vietnam since Thanksgiving. *facepalm* 5y
ElaineR @TheAromaofBooks ah don't worry. It took me almost all of last year to read "Ten Types of Human" by Dexter Dias. I can judge no one ;-) What makes it worse is that I'm still not sure it was worth it. 5y

Day 11 #adventrecommends @emilyrose_x

I read this book some time ago but recently I lent it to a friend & then I had to re-read. It is an unusual story of a man who is living a destructive lifestyle & after a life-changing accident he meets a woman who tells him stories about how they've met before. The story then jumps back hundreds of years...it is so intriguing that you can't put it down.

tessavi I got this from a used bookstore recently, couldn't resist the black edges. I worry it's going to be too much romance for me though. 6y

LOVED this audiobook! It‘s such a unique story, with a sarcastic and unhappy man getting into a horrific accident that leaves his severely burned and the mentally unstable woman who shows him what it really means to live and love by recounting their epic and tragic love story that has stretched over the centuries in various iterations. It‘s not my typical read/listen but I found it fascinating and touching. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This book was UNBELIEVABLE. You could call the style visceral, as that seems to be the 'in vogue' word for detailed injury and violence descriptions? However, the writing is spectacular, it's plain poetry in prose. And the story carries a certain karmic interconnectedness, like a constant battle of two lovers trying to meet but always ending up apart. An unbelievably beautiful story, and I can't do it justice in just a few words.

I wanted to love this one, since it came highly recommended. But it didn't strike a chord with me, and even verged on annoying. It reads like a debut novel that needed more editing. On paper I should have loved it but the writing style just wasn't for me. Full review at www.TheBibliophage.com.

ValerieAndBooks What do I do if I have about 100 books in my TBR piles 🙈🙊? How do you choose for the bingo card? 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ValerieAndBooks My TBR piles are huge too. But these are books I either want or need to read sooner than later. Totally an arbitrary decision. 😜 7y
ValerieAndBooks Another thing I've wondered about these bookish bingo projects. After the card is made, does one just purposefully read books so that a row is finished ASAP? Or is there a way that squares are "called" as in a real bingo game? (I'm probably overthinking this LOL). 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ValerieAndBooks Good questions. I suppose it's different for every reader. I don't try specifically to BIngo, like you would in a bingo hall. And as far as I know, there's no one calling the squares. We all just choose individually. 😎 7y

Captivating from the start. Beautifully drawn. This book disgusted me and made me laugh at the same time; i found myself not at all sympathetic toward the main character (in fact I didn't like him much), while at the same time wishing I could hug him. How does an author do that? I am in awe of his craft. I particularly liked how this story intertwined with a series of seemingly short stories that all connected in the end.
