Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park | Michael Crichton
Before seeing Jurassic World film this June read the original, multimillion copy No. 1 bestselling thriller that inspired the first major motion picture Jurassic Park. On a remote jungle island, genetic engineers have created a dinosaur game park.An astonishing technique for recovering and cloning dinosaur DNA has been discovered. Now one of mankind's most thrilling fantasies has come true and the first dinosaurs that the Earth has seen in the time of man emerge. But, as always, there is a dark side to the fantasy and after a catastrophe destroys the park's defence systems, the scientists and tourists are left fighting for survival...With this masterful cross of science fiction and action-adventure, Michael Crichton created one of the biggest bestsellers of all time, turned by Steven Spielberg into the highest grossing blockbuster ever in 1993.

Clear why this is a classic. Slow burn that accelerates to a sprint-paced marathon finish. Wonderfully combines action with philosophy and the consequences of so-called “advances.”

A must read classic science fiction novel. Fans of the film may be bothered by narrative changes that take a slow burn thriller and transforms it to an action adventure. However, many of the themes of control, genetics, and recreational attractions and the mathematical sledgehammer of info dumps throughout work better as a novel than a film.

An example of source and film being perfect but also different.

I got this book because I really wanted to read the story that the movie was based one. They movie and book are quite different from each other in a lot of ways, the book makes the dinosaurs seem way more terrifying and the park management way more incompetent. The only thing I didn‘t like was book Lex, she is the most annoying character I‘ve ever seen. If you look up the tv trope “The Load”, you‘ll understand. I still really enjoyed it though.

Hey everyone. First off I'd like to thank everyone who checked in on me whilst I've been missing. Had a lot going on. Mehso-so

It's perhaps an unfair comparison, as nostalgia and repeated viewings have the original film firmly entrenched in positive association and memory, and this is my first time encountering the book, but this is a case for me of ' the movie was better'. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/ Certainly interesting to see what they changed/kept/left out - Grant's 180 on kids, the existence of Ed Regis and Ian Malcolm being more of a pill than a charismatic powerhouse (who can compete against Jeff Goldblum, I mean really). Speaking of which, huge props to the screenwriter for distilling Malcolm's lectures (plural) down to that one speech over a meal. 11mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? There are certainly interesting factoids and a quality 'unfolding mystery'/sinister suspense in the first third, but getting on the island and having things continue to stretch out...The film has admirable pacing that summarizes the salient points made and keeps the action and tension. The book tries, but keeps going on so long it gets tedious. 11mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Further comparisons:
Weird to see there were only three years between book publication and film release, both firmly entrenched in the 90s, and yet the film manages to be not nearly as eye-roll inducing in its male gaze towards Sattler, and at least not as overt in its fatphobia toward Nedry.
11mo
See All 6 Comments
Robotswithpersonality 5/? I appreciate that the film aged up the kids and made Lex a big sister thus reducing her function as an irritant as seen in the novel. 11mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/7 The triceratops scenes are tied for me: while I was flabbergasted to find it was a stegosaurus not a triceratops in the book and there was no sense of wonder from any when encountering the sick dino, (Grant smiling while listening to the dino breath, professing his love for that type of dino - I have to assume it was a member of the film production with that passion, someone knew at least as much wonder as analytical assessment or fear for these creatures should be on display on screen). I did appreciate actually getting an answer in the book as to why the animal was sick, and the Ralph the baby triceratops scene later in the book was so precious I feel a little cheated we didn't get that on film. 11mo
Robotswithpersonality ⚠️child death, fatphobia, misogyny 11mo

Another excellent read. Quite a dark book comparing to the movie. Gripping action holding up until the last minute. I was surprised how the focus of the book was almost complete opposite from the movie, greed vs. miscalculated dream. Both movie and book are excelent, now I am very curious about The Lost World book, hopefully will pick it up soon.

I have to confess, I‘m only a few pages into JP, but it‘s already so good. I‘ve actually read it before, but it was not long after the movie came out when I was 10 years old, so I don‘t remember much, and probably didn‘t really understand it.

I made Salsa Lizano for #FoodAndLit #CostaRica, & put it on a ribeye (that I got WAY on sale 😉). It was really good, but I wish my pic was better. That steak looks like it was mauled by a velociraptor.

Maggie4483 Another day-late post. I‘m excited to start China for September! 1y

Oh, that was fun, those were some nasty dinosaurs 🦖 I see how this is a classic, I really liked the mathematician and his predictions, his criticism of modern society, ethics and also how he makes everyone consider the responsibility for their actions, even the palaeontologists.

I read this book back in high school and reread it as part of our local book store‘s Books to Movie series. It‘s still a page-turner. Parts read as if they are current events of today. I love the science behind the story. Yet I can‘t help but think that Steven Spielberg improved on the elements with his film.

the main conflict is man vs nature (kind the dinos aren't natural) one of the conflicts is with the raptors and how the humans think they are all in there cages but there are actually multiple out side the border fence and using the cargo boats to escape to the main land. the now wild raptor even got new colors to blend in to the foliage on the island.

this is a good book for si-fi horror fans. the book has more gore and is darker then the movie. on of the darker parts is when a newborn is eaten alive by a small bird sized dinosaur called Procompsognathus and another darker part is when three raptors rip apart a baby raptor and eat its body. a third dark part is when a character named Nerdy gets hi organs torn out while he is alive by a 10 foot tall Dilophosaurus. there is alot more it is cool

The debate carried by Malcom about if science really contributes to advance civilization and how we should ask scientists for accountability and be aware of which "advances" are good for us and which ones are not is really interesting. The author talks a lot about how we are not destroying the planet, the planet will survive, life will continue, we won't.⬇️

nanuska_153 Over 30 years after the publication of the book and despite all the evidence right in front of us we continue to ignore this fact. 2y

Good science fiction makes you believe that what happens in the book could happen in real life, doesn't matter how fantastic it sounds.I'm not going to surprise anyone by saying this books makes you believe that cloning dinosaurs could happen(and that it would be a bad idea?).For those fans of the first movie that are wondering if reading the book worth's it,yes,it does. The material is well researched, the story is a bit different, and ⬇️⬇️

nanuska_153 the deaths of both dinosaurs and humans are scarier. My favourite difference is that in the book Alan really likes kids, because like him, kids love dinosaurs, which is a detail I didn't know the little child in me who has been loving dinosaurs for her whole life needed 2y

From page one there is a quiet horror that seeps out of the pages, the build up is slow which only adds to the dread, the gloom is a real as the mist over the island.

Then all of a sudden everything happens at once and I spent 60% of the book in a state of anxiety. There is no let up, no recovery time, no time to sit back in your seat, its full on up until the last page.

This is an incredibly bingeable book.

Fantastic.

I‘ve read this I think twice before, and somehow always seems to forget everything about it. This time around, I found Lex incredibly irritating. Having 3 kids, I can‘t imagine an 8 yr old acting so whiny and petulantly in such dangerous situations. Also, Ellie did nothing but look hot in her short shorts. Maybe Crichton didn‘t like women back then? Otherwise, fun read, fun dinosaurs.

Coming to this from watching the films, there are so many differences, especially in terms of the Lost World. Man, were we cheated terribly in that film adaptation. Cheated!! Sarah Harding was such a badass in the book.

Much like Crichton, a lot of scientific details to make it all plausible and natural within the scope of the fantasy without losing the reader. Both books were entertaining, detailed, and yes filled with science and dinosaurs.
