You have GOT to read this! It is so sweet and funny! The town of Cranford is basically an Amazonian village if the Amazons had been little old ladies. I freaking loved this story! 236/1,001 #1001Books Double #BookSpin for November: #52BookClub (City Name in the Title)

Clare-Dragonfly This book is delightful! I got my IRL book club to read it after enjoying it with the #Pemberlittens 😄 13mo
AshleyHoss820 @Clare-Dragonfly Oh my gosh, I love that!! Have you watched the BBC show with Dane Judi Dench? We watched the first episode for class and I just adored it! 13mo

AshleyHoss820 @batsy That‘s the perfect word for this! We read it after The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, so it was super refreshing! 😂 13mo
TheAromaofBooks I almost didn't read this one because I did NOT enjoy North and South, which is supposed to be Gaskell's best work. But I found Cranford to be honestly delightful and enjoyed the whole thing. 12mo
AshleyHoss820 @TheAromaofBooks I was back and forth with North and South. I appreciated it, but I didn‘t love it. This fun little novel was so refreshing!! Not to be dramatic, but I would die for the ladies of Cranford! 🤣☺️ 12mo

What a fun series of vignettes in a cozy and comical yet loving and friendly English village. Refreshing that the narrator didn't have a romance plot, too! #classics

I ended up enjoying this little book way more than I had expected after the first few chapters. At first the whole story seemed to be going nowhere, but the characters slowly grew on me, and I started to appreciate Gaskell's observations about ladies' lives in a small community.
The daily discussions with the #pemberlittens and of course @BarkingMadRead 's hashtags also enhanced the enjoyment factor for me, so thank you all!

BarkingMadRead I‘m glad you liked it!!! 2y

Chapter 3: #stillnoveggies but Matty‘s old beau looks like #DonQuixote so we have that going for us 🤷🏻‍♀️ #thereareactualmen #justnogentlemen #animportantdistinction #pemberlittens #hashtagbrigade

Morr_Books Is the Don Quixote reference supposed to mean that he is handsome? I feel like Matty's love life is just like Austen's Persuasion. Also, do we know who the narrator is? Did I miss that? 2y
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books I don‘t believe we know who the narrator is, I don‘t recall anyone saying. 2y
See All 22 Comments
mcctrish I was wondering about the narrator too. I sort of laugh at the undercurrent running through the story - who is hiding between the clock and the door ? 2y
Bookwormjillk #AtLeastWeGotOranges I have no idea what this book is about and I keep mixing up the characters, but it‘s a hoot. Cows in flannel and sucking oranges behind a screen. What more could you want? 2y
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk it really is delightfully bizarre 🤣🤣🍊🍊 2y
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks our bar is set so low 🤣 2y
Clare-Dragonfly This book is delightful! 😂 Does anyone know what the narrator was trying to do at the fabric store? She was looking for something to match a dress that needed a new breadth. I don‘t know what part of a dress would be a breadth unless it‘s all of the fabric, which makes no sense, because then what would she be matching? I tried to Google it but no one had an answer for my very normal historical fashion question 😂 2y
dabbe The narrator reminds me of the narrator in REBECCA. We never get to know her first name, just Mrs. de Winter. Maybe this narrator is just there to be our eye-witness and nothing more. She hasn't really told us anything about herself except that she sews her father's shirts and that he didn't want her home (no idea why). And what about the relationship between Matilda and Mr. Holbrook and her crying at the end? Nice climatic ending, Gaskell! 2y
BarkingMadRead @dabbe maybe this one will roll over into the next one? Also, wondering if the narrator saying she wasn‘t wanted at home meant more that she wasn‘t needed at home and could stay longer? I‘m not sure 2y
dabbe @BarkingMadRead I think you're probably right. The narrator stated it as a fact of little concern, so maybe I was reading too much into it. Having two people die in chapter 2 has made me suspicious! 🤣 2y
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly I wonder if she needs to let out a dress and doesn‘t have enough of a seam to do it? So she needs extra fabric to match to widen it? (edited) 2y
Ruthiella @mcctrish 100% it‘s the maidservant‘s boyfriend hiding between the clock and the door! 2y
willaful @Clare-Dragonfly I feel like it means she needed to widen the dress? But I could be completely wrong.

I took wasn't wanted at home to be literal, but it could definitely mean the other. She does seem to do a lot of visiting though. I maybe get poor relation vibes?
2y
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk that whole orange scene is bonkers 2y
peanutnine @mcctrish @Ruthiella I love the idea of the maidservant hiding her boyfriend in odd places and acting like everyone else is crazy when they notice 😂 2y
mcctrish @peanutnine honestly there is so much going on here but most of it is told as an aside or just briefly mentioned and we have to read between the lines 2y
BarkingMadRead @peanutnine I was definitely here for it 🤣🤣 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @Ruthiella @willaful That makes plenty of sense! Thank you! If one of the historical costuming YouTubers I follow ever does a call for literary questions, I will ask this 😆 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @peanutnine Yessss, I loved that too! After all, the terms of her employment say she can‘t have a boyfriend… so clearly she doesn‘t have a boyfriend. And then she‘s forced to leave? 💯 she got pregnant or at least married and went off to her own household. 2y
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly that‘s what I thought 2y

Today‘s stack. I finished the tagged, which was a nice set of sort of vignettes from a female-dominated English town. Lots of social commentary about the genteel poor, which was very well done. Still plugging away at Don Quixote (not only is Pickles judging me, my kid keeps reminding me Pickles is judging me) and getting back to 1619 (hope to finish next month).

DisneyFan Don Quixote is my one of my most favorite book of all time. Happy to see someone else reading it too ! 2y
ravenlee @DisneyFan DQ is kind of my literary nemesis. This is the third or fourth time I‘ve attempted it over the last 20-ish years. When I first encountered it in Spanish class I liked it, but trying to read it in English was another story. This time, going really slowly, I‘ve come farther than any previous attempt, so 🤞🏻. 2y

It‘s got some great things going for it; it‘s a novel mostly of women, small town gossipy feel but 1800s style and the little bits of humour scattered throughout. I listened to the audio and the narrator couldn‘t have been a better choice. Unfortunately I still found it all a bit dull. The characters and their lives became a bit tedious after a while and I found myself drifting. ⭐️⭐️

Caroline2 Yes, I felt the same. I think North and South would be better. I loved the mini series any ways. 😆 4y
youneverarrived @Caroline2 I can see it working well as a mini series 👍 4y

First up for me this Saturday, to work on reading this one. One of my goals for the #CYOReadathon this weekend is to finish two books I‘m currently reading. This is the oldest, from last October! (This copy is a little beat up, but it‘s a 1928 edition that belonged to my grandmother.)

Tamra I have this on my shelf. I think it might make a nice comfort read to fall into. Is my impression correct? 5y
LauraBrook @Tamra So far, yes! It seems to be light on plot, and more about the relationships in this small town. Easy reading to be sure. 5y

This was a sweet easy to read classic that was a nice escape during a difficult time, and an easy #1001books book to tick off. Very good natured and entertaining. During a different time I might have rated it a so so and said it all felt a little inconsequential but that was a good thing right now! It definitely wasn‘t as good as North and South, the only other Gaskell I‘ve read, but not bad at all and I do recommend

Will I ever get my fill of cozy 19th century British novels? Probably not. Gaskell takes us all along on extended visits to Cranford and the quiet lives of its mostly late middle age widowed and spinster residents. It can certainly be a little too sweet and charming, but given how ugly the real world is right now, a little too sweet is pretty easy to forgive.

I watched the BBC series a few years ago and now read the book for the first time. The inhabitants of the little town Cranford are mostly women: widows and old spinsters. There is no big story arc, it's like a collection of vignettes about the women's lives. That may sound dull, but I found it charming, touching, sometimes sad and sometimes funny. I enjoyed it very much.

Is there a more perfectly poignant book than Cranford? In my current mood, happy to be back in Edinburgh but a little sad to leave my family after a lovely Christmas, the warmth, tenderness and gentle humour was perfect. It also has the dubious honour of being the only book that has made me cry in each of the first several chapters. Don't let that put you off, it's wonderful. And how could I resist this cover?

I really wanted to love this one, but it just wasn't my favorite. It read more like interlocking short stories, rather than a novel (that's not necessarily a bad thing, but was different than what I was expecting). Not much plot to speak of. It does give a great peek into English village life at the time, in a place made up mostly of women, so it's not all about finding a husband. And the cover is beautiful!

Do any #audiobook fans out there use #librivox? Trying it out for the first time and finding the narration stilted. Wondering if all books are read by amateurs. I like that they are putting more books from the common domain on audio. But it's also making me appreciate how difficult it is to read aloud in an engaging way. 🙄

TheBookAddict My husband tried it and he picked a few, but was disappointed. It could just be because we have become accustomed to the quality of the content on audible. 8y
merelybookish @TheBookAddict Good to know I'm not the only one. I ended up bailing on Cranford. 8y
readinginthedark They are all read by amateurs, and a lot of them are not great. I've found a couple that were good, but if your library has a wide audio selection, it's not worth much time to sift through. 8y

Delightful book by one of my fave English ladies. Historically, this book is a bold statement on women's abilities to live w/o men as the centerpiece & have friendships amongst themselves when they were believed to have "separate spheres." But it's also like looking into a quaint, lace-trimmed window on 19th cent English country life. The characters are charming & witty as they tell anecdotes about their lives. No definitive plot, but very fun. ?

Martyn_J_Pass I wonder if the same argument could be made about men not feeling that women should be the centrepiece of their lives? A crazy thought I just had when I read your review. I might take a look at this book. 8y
BookishFeminist @The_Bear What do you mean with your line of thinking? In this book I think it would be difficult to make that argument since women are the focus- men dip in and out of the book & certain women's anecdotes, but we don't get their perspectives. I think I see where you're going though if you're referring to the separate spheres theory. 8y

BookishFeminist @Sue Mary Barton is my favorite too. I also really like her ghost stories. 8y
Posemn This is a great review. I have added Gaskell's book(s) to my ever growing list(s). 8y

Relaxing Wednesday morning. 🌄📖🕯☕️

I'm flying through this book because I'm enjoying it so much. Elizabeth Gaskell's characters are...eccentric. Let's put it that way. 😂

CoffeeAndABook Looks like a perfect moment in time 🎈 Also I love the beautiful binding of your book. Sounds like a quirky read 😉 8y
Zelma Lovely picture and sounds like a very relaxing morning. 👍☕️ 8y
hlgreenfield One of my fav books. Gaskell should be up there with Austen as one of the greats! 8y

Curling up with a feminist classic for a while before dinner time. ??

I've never read this one before but love Elizabeth Gaskell. I'm really excited by its premise of a female-only society to combat the misconstrued "separate sphere" concept of 1800s England where women were believed incapable of creating and maintaining female friendships. Gaskell's like NOPE, y'all are wrong. ??

BethFishReads Loved this one 8y
BookishFeminist @BethFishReads Awesome! Elizabeth Gaskell can do no wrong in my eyes so I'm sure I will too 😀 8y
BethFishReads You'll have to see the movie after you finish. It's a classic and fun 8y

Yamich49 Ooooo this has been on my TBR for a while! I don't think I knew what it was about tho - your description is making me want to read it even more! 8y
BookishFeminist @BethFishReads Will do! I'll add it to my watch list. 8y
BookishFeminist @Yamich49 I think you'd like it- there's some not so casual misandry in it. ? "She wore a cravat & a little bonnet like a jockey-cap & altogether had the appearance of a strong-minded woman; although she would have despised the modern idea of women being equal to men. Equal, indeed! She knew they were superior." ?? 8y
Amandajoy You've made me want to read some of her work soon! 8y
BooksForYears I love your "books & 'bucks" photo series! 8y
BookishFeminist @Amandajoy Enjoy! I love her gothic stuff- she's one of my favorite lady writers. 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @BooksForYears 😂😂 thanks! My partner works there so I've always got it on hand. It's a convenient excuse to cover up the fact that I'd be addicted anyway. I like the idea of a #BooksnBucks hashtag. 😀 8y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist 😆😆😆🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽💁🏻💁🏻 Sounds perfect! I'll add it to my to buy notebook and hopefully I can find a cheap used copy on my road trip next week! 👍🏽👍🏽 8y
BookishFeminist @Yamich49 Yessss!! Do it! This edition is gorgeous. If not I'm pretty sure you can find it on kindle for free since it's in the public domain! I love discovering old feminist work like this- I picked this up because of the cover & it's been on my TBR bc I love Gaskell, but discovered it's awesome feminism when I read the intro. I'm so thrilled!!😂😂 8y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist It is gorgeous!! I'm pretty sure I actually have all of her books on my kindle but I feel like this is one I would want a physical copy of - especially if I find a pretty one like this! I love Gaskell too! Right? I've had the miniseries on my to-watch list too and never realized what it was about! 😆 8y
RealLifeReading I love love Gaskell. I confess I only started reading her after watching the North and South series! (Richard Armitage 😍) 8y
[DELETED] 3323341091 such a great read! and your edition is pretty. 8y
LeahBergen I read Mary Barton in university and own this one(and have been meaning to read it for ages!) Watch the BBC mini-series, too. It's really good. 8y
Yamich49 @RealLifeReading OMG same here! Which is the opposite of what I usually do - read the book then watch the miniseries. I love the North and South miniseries and Richard Armitage! He is the perfect Thornton. 😍 8y
BookishFeminist @Yamich49 Yes! These editions are all so pretty. I want them all. 😍😍😍 gotta get on the miniseries when I'm done with this- I don't watch many movies so I rarely get to those first! I'll have to watch N&S too. Maybe when I'm holed up this winter. 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @RealLifeReading She's amazing- I'm going to have to watch the North & South miniseries! It's rare I watch something first before the book but not because I have anything against it- I just watch a lot less than I read. I'm all about Richard Armitage. 😍😍 8y
BookishFeminist @fern Glad you enjoyed it! I am too so far. This is my library's edition but I may go out and buy it because it's so pretty. 8y
BookishFeminist @LeahBergen You'd probably like this one! I'm loving it so far. I definitely plan to watch the mini series when I'm done. 😀 8y
mhillis This is the only one of her books I've read! Hope you enjoy it. Ill look into the others! 8y
BookishFeminist @mhillis how did you like it? I hope you enjoy her others! She writes some excellent gothic stuff. 8y
mhillis It's not the kind of book I usually read but I liked it😉 I'd be interested to see the tv series too 8y
