Things I liked: Representation. Gritty, but not over the top. The depiction of grief and addiction.

Things I didn‘t like:
Odessa. She just irritated me. Like kissing another man when your lover is dead? It acknowledges that it‘s selfish, it just really rubbed me the wrong way. Plus, the relationship that supposedly sends her into this grief spiral hardly gets any screen time. It feels like it‘s kind of superficial? All in all, not a fave.

KatieCarpenter I think I will still pick up the next in the series though because the world itself intrigued me! And I did enjoy some of the other characters. 6y

A wonderful way to start 2019. Austen‘s fierce wit and razor sharp commentary pour off the page. When people talk about the Darcy/Lizzie romance they seem to forget that while he changes, Elizabeth does as well. They are improved by each other. That is the point.

“I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun."

The Paperwhite Narcissus | Cynthia Riggs

Okay Litsy community, I‘ve been thinking a paperwhite would be nice. Recommendations on the best version? Or would an oasis be better? Give me your opinions!

JoScho If it were me I would get the new Paperwhite. Price is right, it is waterproof and has audible. I played with it at Best Buy this week and was really impressed. Love the flush screen as well. 6y
Melissa_J For my money I‘d actually go for a Kobo. I currently use both a Kobo Forma and a Kindle Paperwhite. I‘ve had various generations of both company‘s e-readers and by far and away prefer Kobo. (edited) 6y
KatieCarpenter @Melissa_J does a kobo allow the kindle app? I‘m assuming yes but I thought I‘d ask :) 6y
Melissa_J No, it doesn‘t. So if you already use the Kindle App and have books on it, I‘d say you‘re safer to stick with a Kindle as Kindle books aren‘t transferable. 6y
Redwritinghood I have the first generation Paperwhite and like it. Haven‘t tried the latest. 6y

This little book of comics is amazing. So much resonated with me! It was heartwarming and real and perfect. So often we are lead to believe that there is something wrong with being quiet. But there‘s not!
It is just a different set of strengths.

Still pretty similar to Harry Potter, but the world and characters bring me to say it was a pretty solid pick.

I felt like I went into this expecting something a little different. It felt more episodic than plot driven. I had a hard time focusing on it, but the characters were great! There was also a lot of information which could be a tiny bit overwhelming at times, which I think makes this one more of a so-so instead of pick.

This book was a bit of a slog for me. I was kind of iffy with Caraval, but this verged pretty close to me saying “I don‘t really like this.”

The main character annoyed me at times, the silly way both male characters fawn over her, the way the plot feels secondary to the two love interests. It just wasn‘t a strong read for me. Don‘t know if I will even read the third in the series. I might, but it won‘t be for a while.

⭐️⭐️ and a half stars.

MirrorMask This book has so many mixed reviews. I don't think I'll read it. 6y
Copwithabook I read the first and felt so-so about it. Your review just tipped the scales for me. I think I‘ll pass on the rest of this series. 6y
KatieCarpenter There were things I did like about it, but they were sort of overshadowed by the things I didn‘t. @MirrorMask (edited) 6y
KatieCarpenter @Copwithabook well, make sure you read other reviews too. Because all reviewers are biased. Even me :) This was different than the first in a lot of ways, just not different in a good way for me. If that makes sense :) (edited) 6y

✅The build up and scary scenes are A++.
✅The intense fear and trauma.
✅ I could not stop turning the pages!

❌The continuous bad language (I‘m not a huge fan of the number of times the n and c words are used in this.)
❌ Strange sexual horror? What is it with King and making sucking c**** a fear tactic?
❌ Jack‘s abusive behavior - even when he‘s “sane”.

Overall, I love the plot and the ideas but a bit of a let down all the same.

I had mixed feelings about this book. The prose was beautiful, but the plot was kind of predictable. Also, I would have liked a little less about the baby. I understand why she used that, but it got a little old after a while. Also, the silly fighting between the women and Isa and her significant other got a bit old as well.

The mystery was a tiny bit disappointing and I felt like it wasn‘t worth all the build up.

There were parts of this I liked, and other parts that just flabbergasted me.

I liked the first 3/4 well enough. But those last few chapters kind of spoiled it. The constant switching between time periods. The weird thing with Bev. (Don‘t even get me going on how creepy that was.) There seemed to be no point other than to shock. The final show down was kind of a let down and it was a bit confusing.

All in all, not a favorite.
