The Bone Tree
The Bone Tree: A Novel | Greg Iles
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes the second novel in his Natchez Burning trilogywhich also includes Natchez Burning and the upcoming Mississippi Bloodan epic trilogy of blood and race, family and justice, featuring Southern lawyer Penn Cage.Former prosecutor Penn Cage and his fiance, reporter and publisher Caitlin Masters, have barely escaped with their lives after being attacked by wealthy businessman Brody Royal and his Double Eagles, a KKK sect with ties to some of Mississippis most powerful men. But the real danger has only begun as FBI Special Agent John Kaiser warns Penn that Brody wasnt the true leader of the Double Eagles. The puppeteer who actually controls the terrorist group is a man far more fearsome: the chief of the state polices Criminal Investigations Bureau, Forrest Knox. The only way Penn can save his father, Dr. Tom Cagewho is fleeing a murder charge as well as corrupt cops bent on killing himis either to make a devils bargain with Knox or destroy him. While Penn desperately pursues both options, Caitlin uncovers the real story behind a series of unsolved civil rights murders that may hold the key to the Double Eagles downfall. The trail leads her deep into the past, into the black backwaters of the Mississippi River, to a secret killing ground used by slave owners and the Klan for over two hundred years . . . a place of terrifying evil known only as the bone tree. The Bone Tree is an explosive, action-packed thriller full of twisting intrigue and deadly secrets, a tale that explores the conflicts and casualties that result when the darkest truths of American history come to light. It puts us inside the skin of a noble man who has always fought for justicenow finally pushed beyond his limits.Just how far will Penn Cage, the hero we thought we knew, go to protect those he loves?

Well, that was unexpected. And so good! I wanted to throw it against the wall so many times, but I also couldn‘t put it down long enough to do that. I think this might have been better than the first one. Iles has no problem killing characters that you think he can‘t possibly kill. I think I need a little break from the crazy racism before I read the next one. Something light and fluffy.

Took me twice as long to read as it should have- but well worth it. This was a great, action packed read with so many twists and turns. Sad at the end though ☹️

TrishB @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft is this ok for #redwhitebluefontonthecover ? I wasn‘t sure if it had to have all the colours on? 5y

I really enjoyed this book, the second of the Trilogy. Being such a big book, I need to read others before I dive into the next one.
This one was a sad one, but won't get into details about it, in case others want to read the Trilogy.
I would highly recommend it that's for sure

I liked this book, but not quite as well as the first in the series story arc. I‘ll move on to third book to see how the story finishes up. I‘m still amazed I‘d never heard of these books until a couple of months ago.

Guys... this trilogy is so freaking good. This is book 2. I am a sleep deprived mom with a newborn and a 3 year old and I still have not been able to put these books down. I love the historical piece to this story- Iles makes this story damn near believable as nonfiction. The characters are so well developed- especially the villains. Highly recommend this series. 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for book 2, time to jump in to book 3 and see how it ends.

AmyG I just won the first book from goodreads and can‘t wait to read this trilogy. I have heard such great things. 7y

Second in the Natchez Burning Trilogy and Iles is so concerned with bringing us up to speed in case we've forgotten details of Book 1 (I had) that it takes its time to get going. Once it does it delves even deeper into America's murky past, adding the Kennedy assassination to the mix. A trifle overlong but I'm hooked anyway.

peacegypsy Hi! May I ask a huge favor? Could you please explain if you need to read the Natchez trilogy only, or do you need to read all of the Penn Cage novels? Essentially, is this a three or a five book series? Thank you so much for any insights! 😊 7y
Minervasbutler @peacegypsy I haven't read the first three and didn't notice that I was missing anything. So a trilogy, definitely. 7y
peacegypsy Thanks!! The covers and descriptions don‘t always make that clear. I appreciate it. 😊 7y

This continues the saga of Penn Cage and his attempt to live a quiet life with his little girl since the passing of his wife. Not gonna happen while there is so much dirt to stir in Natchez, MI that has his family's history written all over it. Found out after manhandling it for too long that it is a first edition. Seems odd to me that the hard cover of the book has to mention of title or author. Is this a thing now?

The 2nd part of this trilogy and the drama involving Mayor Cage and his father Dr Cage left me angry and yelling at my book, literally. But yet I still couldn't put it down. It made me pump my fists in relief and then made me tear up. And left me wanting to turn the page before I finished the last one.

Just finished The Bone Tree, the second book in the Natchez Trilogy. At over 800 pages each I wish I could read faster! Even my dog is looking for attention. LOL. This book was even better than the first. I was already hugely invested in these characters so I couldn't wait to see what happened next. No spoilers but OMG this series is good. Onto Mississippi Burning.....

Reading the Bone Tree by Greg Iles and thank goodness I'm almost done with this LONG book. I'm getting tired of the Kennedy conspiracy stuff and the "poor dad" secrets that Penn's dad is keeping. Won't read the next installment.
