Quiet
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking | Susan Cain
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh's sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer. Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie's birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Susan Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the twentieth century and explores its far-reaching effects. She talks to Asian-American students who feel alienated from the brash, backslapping atmosphere of American schools. She questions the dominant values of American business culture, where forced collaboration can stand in the way of innovation, and where the leadership potential of introverts is often overlooked. And she draws on cutting-edge research in psychology and neuroscience to reveal the surprising differences between extroverts and introverts. Perhaps most inspiring, she introduces us to successful introverts--from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Finally, she offers invaluable advice on everything from how to better negotiate differences in introvert-extrovert relationships to how to empower an introverted child to when it makes sense to be a "pretend extrovert." This extraordinary book has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how introverts see themselves.

Sadly… I‘ve tried this twice now, and I should be into it… but I‘m just not…. No idea why. Maybe I‘ll try again sometime in the future.

TiredLibrarian I loved this one, but I couldn't get into her second book at all. 2y
KathyWheeler I loved this book but haven‘t read anything else by her. 2y
Graywacke I thrashed it in a review years ago. ☺️😁 As a fellow introvert, i feel a little guilty about that, but i have some issues with the book. 2y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Graywacke I might have to go look that up… maybe it can put into words what I‘m having trouble vocalizing. But from her beginning example of Rosa Parks and her quietness winning the day…which admittedly was the story we all learned in grade school, but now know isn‘t exactly correct, there was much more to that story….to the Tony Robbins conference, which felt more about the manipulative selling practices… I‘m just not feeling there‘s a lot on⤵️ 2y

This book really validated so much about me.Her discussion of our culture‘s evolvement into one supportive of extroverts was also illuminating. When my son(an introverted autistic), was 4 his preschool teacher was very concerned not because of who he was,but because all children had to work in teams as teams were the future of the work force in the U.S.That is when the town sent a special ed preschool teacher to the school.

🧠 How do you take care of your mental health?
As a super introvert it is essential to my well-being to carve out lots of alone time. This means setting boundaries and saying no regularly.

🧠 How did you show yourself love this week?

This book was an eye opener for me. All of a sudden, things made sense. I wish this book had been around when I was in high school and college. It would have completely changed my perception of myself.
Susan Cain did a lot of research for this book explaining the difference between introverts, extroverts, and how to cope as an introvert. It is a must read for anyone who has felt out of place in our social media, extrovert obsessed world.

I absolutely loved this book. It really has given me insight to myself and made me feel less different. Introverts and extroverts have their own strengths and weaknesses. If you are are an introvert i highly recommend this book.
I give it four stars because some of her stories are a little too long. Occasionally they take the reader away from the text instead of enlightening her point due to their length.

🎧 This is a book everyone should read no matter if you think you‘re an introvert or extrovert. If you‘re a teacher or employer/boss/HR.

I learned that I‘m an introvert and not shy as there is a difference.

There‘s a wealth of knowledge that you might not think about and know that whether in work or school that 25-50% of who you deal with daily may be an introvert.

Daisey I appreciated this book when I read it as well. I think one of the things I found most surprising was how many people felt uncomfortable (not sure that‘s the best word) being their introvert self.
