so-soI was so excited to read this! It had been hyped up in almost every book forum I follow, but I was left wanting. Many times the book goes off on irrelevant little tangents and there's an odd supernatural aspect I couldn't get behind. Some of it was very touching, but for the most part I feel this book did not live up to its reputation. 🤷 I expected deep introspection, but got irritating family drama instead... Hmm.

bailedUnpopular opinion, I do not like Paulo Coelho's work. I bailed on The Alchemist and I'm bailing on this too. I love stories about strong women and I really thought this would fulfill that. Well, as I have seen many times with male authors, they are not good at writing female characters. He took a badass femme fatale from history and made her story trite, shallow, and boring! It contained a few good 1-liners, but halfway through... BAIL.

pickI really enjoyed this book, I devoured it in a matter of days. I'm a sucker for all things Tudor-related. This book is written from the perspective of the 3 Grey sisters, Jane, Katherine, and Mary after Edward VI dies young and leaves the throne of England empty and the battles the sister fight to survive in the vicous and fickle royal courts. (Note, it helps a lot if you already have basic Tudor knowledge, if not, it could be a bit confusing.)

2. I occasionally try new genres, but there are a few types of books I avoid... Harlequin novels, outlandish sci-fi, most fantasy, etc

I had an idea. so-soEven at 700+ pages long, I was still so enamored I read it in a week (and I'm no speed-reader). HOWEVER, only the first 500 pages were worthwhile, had JCO stopped there this book would be an absolute KNOCK-OUT, it was compelling, forced me to think outside of my comfort zone, gave fascinating insights in to the religious delusions of man. But then after p. 500 it did a 180° turn and it was 100% superfluous and completely ruined the book. 3/5 stars
