I've been offline since Thursday so I have to catch up on all my reviews. ( see my previous post)

#BookedInTime 1970s South Africa September 2024
@cuilin @dabbe

This was a compelling story that I really enjoyed and was very well done. The only reason I took off a star was I just didn't like Robin. Even though she did redeem herself a little at the end.

South African apartheid

This is a very interesting read about the end of Apartheid. I learned so much. Mandela was a visionary. He took a revolution and expertly molded it with the goal to limit violence, ironically by using one of the most violent sports. It is hard to believe what Mandela was able to do, it honestly is such a movie moment
I enjoyed this book the writing was easy to digest

*Rugby was the opium of apartheid "

As someone in the US who has really gotten into rugby the last 2 years, and who quickly became a huge Springbok fan, this book has been super interesting.

One of the most popular Springbok player is a white man named Fif de Klerk I had to look up if he was related to the president who transferred power to Mandela (he is not).

I do wish there was more rugby talk in this first half, but I am learning so much

#BookedInTime

Shout out to @AllDebooks for suggesting Africa as a location.

Research led me to these books. The only one I‘m familiar with is Cry Freedom. They all seemed really good. I think I will be choosing Cry, the Beloved Country.

ChaoticMissAdventures This is great!! I have read a couple of books about the after effects like Trevor Noah's autobiography but nothing about this particular time. Glad to have a reason to go down a book rabbit hole. 5mo

Cuilin @ChaoticMissAdventures oh my gosh, my daughter read the Trevor Noah biography, and I saw it sitting on her shelf and that is what inspired this theme/prompt. Enjoy the research. (edited) 5mo
slategreyskies I passed through South Africa a few times in 98-99, & I stayed with a white host family one of those times. They were some of the kindest people I‘d ever met until somehow the topic of black people came up at the dinner table. The hatred was so abrupt & harsh & complete, & I didn‘t understand how anyone could think that way. Years later, I studied apartheid & realized it had only just stopped when I was there. It will likely take a long time ⬇️ 5mo
slategreyskies (Cont.) for the pain & hatred & racism to be pushed out. It is so important to learn about this sort of thing. I think, if we learn about what happened, then maybe we can keep it from happening again. 5mo
Karisimo This has been on my list for awhile! 5mo
Cuilin @slategreyskies what an interesting experience, I agree it‘s important to learn and acknowledge the ugly truth of racism and white privilege. We can only do better when we face and confront our own bias. 5mo
Cuilin @Karisimo it looks really good. 5mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @slategreyskies oh my goodness, I don't know what I would have done in this situation. It is so utterly bizarre to me to hate people in this way. And to share that hatred so openly? 5mo
LeeRHarry I read Cry, the Beloved Country for a bookgroup read years ago - Pamela Jooste is also an author worth checking out. (edited) 5mo
AllDebooks Yay! I'm really looking forward to researching this one. I highly recommend 5mo

When I was reading this I legitimately didn't know much about this game as I don't know much...OK nothing about rugby. At the end of this book I couldn't read fast enough to find out how it was going to end! Another one I highly recommend if you're looking for a solid #nonfiction read.
