Pickpick

I had mixed feelings with this novel but then I listened an interview with the author and I could understand better the novel development. I think I wanted a “happy ending” but author gave a probable, more realistic ending. I will read anything by this author and I think the narrator in the audiobook is amazing. I like to read the physical book with audiobook at the same time whenever is possible. It‘s like watching the novel in action. 4⭐️

I have mixed feelings with this trilogy. I read the first two books. I like the world and the characters, specially Sunny, main character. For what I read, this first book can be read by children from 10 or 12 years old. I‘m not the best audience for this book and I‘m not an expert in the area of children‘s literature. I think some parts should be open for discussion with the younger ones if that is the case. Maybe other adults disagree with me⬇️

Gissy Sunny is albino but in the story something magic happened which for me is like not accepting her true self if that is the message in the book, acceptance. There are parts of physical punishment from parent and teacher and I didn‘t see this part explained or resolved in the story. It was like part of the culture? I don‘t know. Chichi, a 13 y/o girl used to sell things at the market by her own. There are men making inappropriate approaches and⬇️ 1y
tpixie Lots of complicated story lines! 1y
Gissy (Cont.) Chichi called them perverts and laughed at this behavior. My concern is that not all 13 y/o minors will have the skills, experience or maturity to manage this type of behavior. Again, this was not discussed in the story. Chichi likes to smoke because that relaxes her. The minors leave the house at midnight to assist to this magic school. The professor is the one who determined the time so they go without authorization⬇️ (edited) 1y

Gissy (Cont.) Minors in this story goes from 12 to 16. Later the mother knows about Sunny‘s leaving the house but didn‘t ask because this is related with the magic. The professor has such authority that in front of the mother, commands Sunny to take her things and go with him, the mother?...silent. According to author, Akata is a rude word for black American or “foreign born black person” but this is the word used as a title for this trilogy🤷🏽‍♀️⬇️ (edited) 1y
Gissy (Cont.) But my opinion is unpopular, this book and the whole trilogy has a rating of 4⭐️Maybe I‘m too old?😂But I think these topics I mentioned can be good for discussion with minors is a way to interact with them. Too many parts very similar to Harry Potter🤔
But I like Sunny. 3⭐️

Gissy @tpixie Maybe I‘m too old? Or too conservative? This book surprised me🤷🏽‍♀️ 1y
tpixie @Gissy I‘m definitely too old! Those are tough subjects- definitely best read with discussions! So many hot topics… 1y

IamIamIam I participated in a cookie exchange last Saturday, which I've already distributed, and I'll be doing another tomorrow! 2y
Andrew65 @IamIamIam Wonderful, being in the U.K. I‘d never heard of them. 2y
Andrew65 @LiseWorks That always works well in my opinion. 2y
IamIamIam @Andrew65 You have to get it started!! My friend and I would each spend weeks baking until we both had kids and she said we needed to work smarter, not harder! Lol, we've been doing a cookie swap for almost 12 years now! It works out so well! 2y
Andrew65 @IamIamIam Sounds fabulous, we definitely need to get it going. Work Smarter, not harder has always been one of my stock phrases. (edited) 2y

Roary47 I like to gift fuzzy socks. I have a very large family so we agreed long ago to only get small things for the adults so we can have more for the kids. 💛 This year I added a chocolate with them in all my once upon a book club boxes I gained over the year so their socks are in all different sizes. 🥰💛 2y
Andrew65 @Roary47 Lovely gifts, and can never beat some chocolate too. (edited) 2y
