Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe
Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe | Fannie Flagg
The day Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison opened the Whistle Stop Cafe, the town took a turn for the better. It was the Depression and that cafe was a home from home for many of us. You could get eggs, grits, bacon, ham, coffee and a smile for 25 cents. Ruth was just the sweetest girl you ever met. And Idgie? She was a character, all right. You never saw anyone so headstrong. But how anybody could have thought she murdered that man is beyond me.Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is a mouth-watering tale of love, laughter and mystery. It will lift your spirits and above all it'll remind you of the secret to life: friends.

4 ⭐️ This was a #bookclub selection and a #reread in April. And I enjoyed it much more this time than I did the first time that I read it. I think it was because I could comprehend it better this time around than I did the first time. I liked the interspersing of newspaper columns with the story. Even though there are some dark themes in this book, I found it to be fairly easy to read. #2024 #bookreview #fiction #greatdepression

I am honestly surprised how high the rating on this one is. But then I scrolled through looking for any reviewer who was not white and could not find anyone. This book is racist. The Black characters are drawn as cartoonish and the N word is used with great abandon. The R slur is used throughout also which is always jarring.
I finished it, there was some charm in the areas she stuck to writing about the white characters, wish it was all that.

Cortg I didn‘t care for it either. 2y
marleed I read this book 2 years ago - many years after watching the movie. I gave it a pick and was glad I read it during a tumultuous time in our history. This was the book that confirmed my need to be anti-racist. The language in this book was grueling to read. With 80s mindset we thought it was okay coming from ‘non-racist‘ characters. No! For that reason I thought it was an important read in the 2020s. We must be better. 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @marleed sadly I think a lot of people still think this way. The same people who defend flying the confederacy flag. I think because I came from a family that had all different races in it (my grandma liked to call us her UN babies) and this language was never appropriate it might be more jarring for me. The author I felt doesn't delve deep enough into why this attitude was bad which I fear makes it miss its mark. I am glad you found good in it 2y

Audio book day as my eyes continue to adjust from Lasik. Getting the plants watered to feel productive.

This book has a grating racist undertone to it that I am not enjoying. I think it is going to be one of those few books that I enjoy the movie more.

I started a random book list for myself, reading the books that inspired the movies I loved as a kid in the 90s. I started with How To Make An American Quilt, then I watched the movie. I have to say, nostalgia isn‘t saving all these titles for me 🤣 But I am still loving this challenge I made for myself. Does anyone have any other 90s book to movie suggestions to follow after this classic?

bio_chem06 @ManyWordsLater Yes! That‘s a great one. I don‘t remember seeing the movie either, so it will be interesting to go into it with no preconceived notions. 2y

Thanks, @Enchanted_Bibliophile and @Eggs #wonderousWednesday

1. Reading Fried Green Tomatoes as a bit of nostalgia since I loved the movie a million years ago. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ —the racism portrayed (though not supported by the mc‘s) is throwing me for a loop

2. So many! Office of Historical Corrections, Bellweather Rhapsody, and Sorrow and Bliss are the first that come to mind.

3. I‘m grateful for my home and family (esp. on tough days like this one)

This book was so sweet and genuinely charming. I was worried at the beginning it would be too folksy and try too hard to be wholesome, but in the end it was quiet, good natured, good at being funny and good at being sad. A pretty perfect piece of Americana to read on a cold night in london.

Karisa Have you seen the movie? I remember loving it when I saw it years ago and am wondering how the two compare. 🤔 3y
Emilymdxn @karisa I haven‘t seen it but id like to now! I don‘t think it‘s as well known in the uk, I don‘t hear people talking about it loads 3y
Karisa @Emilymdxn I think most people over 40 would get the “Towanda!” reference over in the US (especially women). I think of the movie as a classic. I didn‘t realize it was a book until I saw your post 😂 Now I want to read it! (edited) 3y

The movie Fried Green Tomatoes has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. I read the book about 10 years ago and enjoyed it. I wanted to do a reread before I read the sequel that came out recently. I decided to grab the #audiobook and I‘m so glad I did! It really brings the story to life and now I think it‘s better than the movie. I‘ve always felt the movie, while amazing, has the tone of being a bit depressing, although there are lots of ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 Funny moments as well. But the tone of the book is more lighthearted and is actually quite funny, although it still has the major plot points of the movie. I love the small-town vibe and the sense of community in Whistle Stop. I love how accepting everyone is about Ruth and Idgie‘s relationship, and unlike the movie, they are both clearly in love with each other and the town treats them like a married couple raising Ruth‘s son. The movie makes ⬇️ 3y
JenlovesJT47 It more one-sided on Idgie‘s part. I freaking love Evelyn Couch and her relationship with Ninny Threadgoode. I teared up a few times and didn‘t want this to end. I devoured it in 4 days. The narrator does a great job and I feel like I have a #bookhangover — all this to say if you enjoy the movie you will definitely like this. Highly recommended to historical fiction lovers. 5⭐️ (edited) 3y

As one of my favorite movies, I decided to read the book. It was pretty darn good, too! It had additional stories about Sipsey‘s family and Smokey Lonesome‘s travels. I recommend reading it rather than listening to the audiobook, at least for the first read. There were a lot of characters I couldn‘t keep track of and the dates at the beginning of chapters are very important.

I read this one for book club at Cavalier House Books. I wasn‘t sure how or if I‘d like it, but it turned out to be exactly what I needed. The entire book feels just like some old southern lady telling you a story about back in the day, and that‘s basically what most of the book is.
