Pickpick

So I was a little annoyed that this book was more about two people working at a newspaper than about children being sold out of desperation in the 1930s. But after a bit I became so immersed in the story that it didn't matter anymore.

3/80

TheBookgeekFrau @DieAReader So do I! But it ended up a decent story in the end, so not a total loss 1mo

This retired English teacher's score sucked! 😂 Though the 17 books I did read were not from childhood but from my years teaching middle school. My 3 choices are for the following reasons:
JOHNNY TREMAIN: #love
OUT OF THE DUST: #lovetoinfinity--in my top 5 list of fave books of all time!
CHARLOTTE'S WEB: Only an Honor winner? #wtf?

Here's the link if you haven't played yet: https://shorturl.at/kosig

Texreader I only read 3 1mo
dabbe @Texreader If I hadn't taught middle school, I would have read 0! You're in good company; most of us scored less than 20. 😂 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩶🖤🩶 1mo
Texreader @dabbe I do have some on my bookshelves I hope to read someday. 1mo

dabbe @Texreader English! So you'd think I would have read more of these! I mostly taught high school, though, so zero Newbery winners for that age group! 🤩😂😘🤩 1mo

dabbe @Texreader Same here. Plus I want to reread JOHNNY TREMAIN again. I have my original teacher copy with all of my notes in it--same for OUT OF THE DUST. 1mo

dabbe @curiouserandcurioser Yay! I love taking polls! 🤩😂🤗 1mo
DogMomIrene I got 17 too😂 A mix from my childhood & teaching years. That committee, though. Sometimes they pick books that may be all fancy pants literary, but good luck enticing a child to read it. 1mo

Have you ever finished a book and you‘re not sure if you pick up another for a while because it was so good? That‘s how I feel after finishing The Four Winds

Long day watching the Grand, though we did have a blast at SkyZone (indoor trampoline park)! And I'm amazed at just how much the 5min knee exercises coupled with a daily 1.5 mile 100ft elevation walks have made difference in my leg strength and stamina; cause it certainly doesn't feel that way when I'm walking up that dreaded, fucking hill 😂

Book and relaxation time 😌

willaful I gave my daughter a SkyZone trip with a friend for Christmas; she was so happy. Her previous trampoline place closed during lockdown so she hadn't been in at least 4 years. 1mo
TheBookgeekFrau @willaful It's so much fun!! 1mo

#ThreeListThursday #TLT

So many I haven't heard of; quite a few I now want to read. The three in the pic above are my favorites that did NOT make the list. As some Littens have stated, the list was interesting to say the least. Even the BBC states that it “also has its limitations and biases“ and that “the list is not designed as a fait accompli, but rather as an inspiration for further discovery and debate.“ ⬇️

dabbe The BBC article was published in 2023, so it is quite recent. For more information or to tell them your thoughts about the list, visit this link:

DogMomIrene 😲They didn‘t include Where the Red Fern Grows? One of my English teacher friends and I would hand that book out to incoming 6th graders and explain what a seminal work it is, even all these years later. 1mo
dabbe @DogMomIrene IKR? My 4th grade teacher read it to us after recess. None of us knew how it would end--including her. We all sobbed at the ending! 🤩😂🤩 1mo
DogMomIrene @dabbe Similar experience, except my 3rd grade teacher didn‘t finish the book before summer and then we moved across country😲 I couldn‘t remember the title so I would meticulously scan every Scholastic book fair table until I eventually found the cover. Took a couple of years, but I too sobbed so hard🐶❤️🐶 1mo
dabbe @DogMomIrene That book was an EXPERIENCE. 🐾😭🐾 1mo

Now in November: A Novel | Josephine Johnson

Pickpick

8th book read November 2024

Beautifully written but so sad. It is the situation of this family struggling and trying to survive during the depression era. The story is narrated by Margaret one of the Haldmarnes daughters. The author describes the environment so well during this period of time, the poverty situation, racism, mental health, etc. no happy endings, no hopes just the real situation that permeated at that time⬇️

Gissy (Cont.) maybe this sad, pessimistic tone is related that this novel was written during the actual depression time as I read in the introduction. I really liked the writing style and theme4.5⭐️ 2mo

I am unsure if it is me, if the book is outdated or what but I am at chapter 5 and I have spent most of the book wondering why we are talking about whatever he is writing about. Then for no apparent reason Egan drops the "R" word and I am over it. It is supposed to be about the dust bowl but I am 1/4 in and he has spent more time talking about people coming to America on boats from Germany and Russia then was ever needed.

Amiable I loved this book 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
