The Hiding Place
The Hiding Place | Corrie ten Boom, Elizabeth Sherrill, John Sherrill
The True Story of a Real-Life HeroIt's World War II. Darkness has fallen over Europe as the Nazis spread hatred, fear and war across the globe. But on a quiet city corner in the Netherlands, one woman fights against the darkness. In her quiet watchmaking shop, she and her family risk their lives to hide Jews, and others hunted by the Nazis, in a secret room, a "hiding place" that they built in the old building. One day, however, Corrie and her family are betrayed. They're captured and sent to the notorious Nazi concentration camps to die. Yet even in that darkest of places, Corrie still fights. This is her story--and the story of how faith, hope and love ultimately triumphed over unthinkable evil.

I‘m at work today so I am only able to focus on that so I‘ll borrow my favorite title “Nichole & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”. I love my job but the public can wear me down if I‘m not prepared.
Tagged book is an example of the woman of God I‘d like to respond like in ALL situations … Corrie Ten Boom

#ReadAway2024 #NonFiction2024 MAUS is the fiction prompt and this is my nonfiction selection. #TBRTarot Choose a book whose author‘s name begins with C. This is a heartbreaking yet joyful book about the experiences of one of the leaders of the Dutch Underground during WWII.

This is the memoir of Corrie Ten Boom, a Dutch Christian woman who hid Jews during World War II with the help of her family. The Nazis ultimately discovered what they were doing and sent them and their father to concentration camps. She was an amazing woman who survived and went on to devote her life to philanthropic work and Holocaust education after the war. She also forgave those who betrayed, imprisoned, and tormented her. Powerful story!

PART 1: 2020 was a tumultuous year in a lot of ways, but it included some great books. I always exclude rereads from my favorites list, though there were many excellent comfort reads I returned to this year.

Here are my top ten favorites, in no particular order:

- The Hiding Place
- Heroes & Mythos
- Anxious People
- Clap When You Land
- The Searcher
.... continued.

Our Pandemic Pages virtual book club read this recently and we all felt a little floored that we hadn‘t read it until now. Such a powerful story of strength and faith during even the hardest of trials. The bravery of Corrie and her family is astounding but the wisdom shared about trusting in God despite what we face is what will stick with me.

Catching up after getting back from vacation this week. So many great books last month!

AvidReader25 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I completely fell in love with that book! It‘s all about broken people, relationships, grief, and more. But it manages to still be filled with humor and hope. His characters are never one dimensional and I love watching him peel back their layers. 4y

I can‘t overstate the power of this book. It‘s the true story of a woman who hid Jews in her Holland home during WWII. Despite the danger that meant for her family, she defied the Nazi rulers & stood for what was right. Her unbelievable bravery in the midst of persecution was so humbling. I couldn‘t put it down. I loved how honest she was about her moments of doubt and frustration. I was blown away by the risks she was willing to take for others.

Not going on my list for this genre. I think it was more the narrator than the story. Corrie and her family were some of the brave people in Holland to help and hide Jews and other “undesirables”. She survived Ravensbrück.
I would have liked to know more about her post war. It also felt less like Corrie‘s story and more about her sister‘s visions and unfaltering faith.

This book details the incredible efforts of the ten Boom family in hiding Jews in Holland during WWII. I am astounded at the courage and faith this family exhibited. Although the content could be hard to read at times, God's love and grace shown through it all. It has brought new perspective and has encouraged me greatly in my own walk with the Lord.

So my word for this year is “Fearless”. Fear is something I‘ve struggled with forever, so I‘m reading/listening to books of Fearless characters and man was this a good one to start with! I have always had a fascination with the Nazi regime and concentration camps, but I didn‘t know anything about Holland during that time! Truly a Fearless story if I‘ve ever read one!

A quote from the autobiography of Corrie ten Boom, a very active member of the Dutch Resistance during World War II. She and her family hid Jews in their home. She was arrested and eventually sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp along with her sister, Betsie. Betsie has an incredible amount of faith in the Bible and it was helpful for me to read how she applied it and how it sustained her during such a dark time. A must read. #resist

Suet624 @Reggie I always wondered how people managed to survive the concentration camps. She doesn‘t dwell on the horrors of it but I loved knowing how she used her faith to get her through. I‘m pretty sure I‘d be the one complaining miserably in the corner. (edited) 6y
Reggie I‘m right there with you Sue. One summer, my friend who was getting his Masters in Civil Engineering waited until the last minute to start his project so there I was in 110 heat shoveling gravel and sand and measuring out water to make a beam while he did “calculations.” I complained so much he finally just said,”Look, I‘m sorry that all the projects with teddy bears were taken!!!” So I can‘t even imagine being in a concentration camp. 6y
Suet624 @Reggie that‘s a riot. I love that story. Now I‘ll just ease on over to the couch where life is easy and troubles are far away. 😂😂💕 6y

Another unknown-to-me title for #novemberbythenumbers. Book by corrie #ten Boom

Corrie was a Dutch watchmaker who became a heroine of the Resistance, a survivor of Hitler's concentration camps, and one of the most remarkable evangelists of the twentieth century. she and her family risked their lives to help Jews and underground workers escape from the Nazis. Only Corrie survived to tell the story of how faith triumphs over evil - from back cover
