A List of Cages
A List of Cages | Robin Roe
When Adam Blake lands the best elective ever in his senior year, serving as an aide to the school psychologist, he thinks he's got it made. Sure, it means a lot of sitting around, which isn't easy for a guy with ADHD, but he can't complain, since he gets to spend the period texting all his friends. Then the doctor asks him to track down the troubled freshman who keeps dodging her, and Adam discovers that the boy is Julian--the foster brother he hasn't seen in five years. Adam is ecstatic to be reunited. At first, Julian seems like the boy he once knew. He's still kind hearted. He still writes stories and loves picture books meant for little kids. But as they spend more time together, Adam realizes that Julian is keeping secrets, like where he hides during the middle of the day, and what's really going on inside his house. Adam is determined to help him, but his involvement could cost both boys their lives. First-time novelist Robin Roe relied on life experience when writing this exquisite, gripping story featuring two lionhearted characters.

I feel like I've been incredibly lucky with the books I've been reading. This was another amazing read in a completely different way.
It's YA and it's heartbreaking. It's emotionally draining. I'm still processing. I'm surprised I haven't heard more about it. Absolutely recommend this. It's not a perfect book, it has left me w/questions-so many questions. I want to know more about what happens next with these characters. I love these characters.

I‘m glad to have the football playoffs as a palate cleanser right now because reading this book earlier put me in a weird headspace. I found the two main characters, Julian and Adam, to be compelling and complex and I‘m rooting for them. The plotting, though, felt a bit uneven, with unresolved threads and some choices (especially about the ending) that I didn‘t agree with. A lot of very upsetting topics which never felt properly resolved.

Suet624 It‘s a great day for watching football with the sound off and reading a good book. 3y

I picked this up at the kids‘ library and it is heartbreaking, gut wrenching, and sometimes difficult to read. Julian is sweet and loving and damaged by years of abuse and Adam is sweet and funny and the perfect person to show Julian love.

Fiction, Young Adult
2019 11 22

This book is supposed to make me cry and I wanted to relate or understand. The reviews said it explores the areas of pain in detail.

1ReVeluvY Adam, a senior who has ADHD, is cheerful and excellent in his studies. As he is working alongside the school psychologist, she asks Adam to spend time with a troubled freshman. It turns out to be Julian who used to live at Adam's house after Julian's parents died. It is the first time they saw each other since the social worker found a close family member. Now, Adam notices there is something off about Julian the more they spend time together. 5y
1ReVeluvY Russel, Julian's uncle who has been abusing him since Adam's mom stopped fostering him. It got to the point where the unhappy and manipulative Russell locked him up in a trunk for several days to make up for Julian's “spoiled“ attitude. The “spoiling“ were about spending time with Adam as Julian becomes freer and a better version of himself. 5y
1ReVeluvY Adam saves the long confused and uncomfortable Julian because of the hunch he has during an early morning. While Russell on the other hand went missing for at least more than a month, Julian became a part of Adam's family (legally). Adam's mom suggests to have a graduation party he wanted but couldn't experience sooner because he focused on helping out on Julian's recovery. During the party, Russell shows up and started taking Julian away. (edited) 5y
1ReVeluvY Adam gets worried and then a commotion occurs. One of his close friends, Charlie moves quick and shoots Russell with the gun that Russell brought after the physical fight.
All becomes free from their cages at the end.

I think I've expected more of this book. Everyone was raving about it and the hype was just so big!
To me it just kind of fell flat.
Might be because I read true crime where these things actually happen and this fictional story just made it a bit to light for me.

This debut is a must-read. Equal parts heartbreak and heart-warming. When senior Adam discovers freshman Julian at his school, their reunion is awkward at first. Something is clearly up with Julian and it‘s Adam‘s persistent kindness that cracks Julian‘s life open. I loved this book and these characters.

It took me awhile to get into this but once I did my poor heartstrings were given quite a workout. Two former foster brothers are reunited. Adam is popular and kind. Julian is awkward and picked on. As they spend time together Adam realizes that things are not right in Julian‘s life and that he might not be able to fix everything. Parts of this book were brutal to read but the friendships at the heart of this story are lovely.

TrishB A good read 👍🏻 6y

This was a solid 4/5 stars for me. The climax was a little contrived, but overall, it was wonderfully written with carefully thought out characters. This is Roe's debut novel and her future is as bright as ten thousand stars.

Cliff notes thoughts for #lmpbc final book for round 3! Now we have all finished I feel like I can post more lol! I loved Charlie!! Adam‘s mom did not feel believable for me. I agree w/ @kellyann28 the end felt rushed. I would‘ve loved a few more chapters following the aftermath & insight into the secondary characters lives. A “10 years later” type of epilogue would‘ve been epic. Heavy topic, but I loved it! @hes7 @Johanna414 #groupb

A difficult but worthwhile read. Trigger warning for abuse of a child; I didn't want to put this one down--a few weak parts in the plot, and not all characters are fully developed, but a satisfying read. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is probably in my top 5 books, I truly love it.
The book follows Adam and Julien. Adam knows Julien from elementary school. When Adam becomes his friend again he see‘s all the things that Julien is going through. This book is truly amazing but so hard to describe. You won‘t be disappointed if you read it.

Also TW for abuse throughout the whole book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had high hopes for this story, and was left feeling rather underwhelmed. I didn‘t feel like there was a lot of world building or character development happening, and the plot seemed kind of weak to me. I‘m glad I checked A List of Cages our from the library, rather than spending money to buy my own copy. It wasn‘t “fantastic,” it wasn‘t “terrible,” it was just “okay.”
