The Miseducation of Cameron Post
The Miseducation of Cameron Post | emily m. danforth
Set in rural Montana in the early 1990s, emily m. danforths The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a powerful and widely acclaimed YA coming-of-age novel in the tradition of the classic Annie on My Mind.Cameron Post feels a mix of guilt and relief when her parents die in a car accident. Their deaths mean they will never learn the truth she eventually comes tothat she's gay. Orphaned, Cameron comes to live with her old-fashioned grandmother and ultraconservative aunt Ruth. There she falls in love with her best friend, a beautiful cowgirl. When shes eventually outed, her aunt sends her to Gods Promise, a religious conversion camp that is supposed to cure her homosexuality. At the camp, Cameron comes face to face with the cost of denying her true identity. The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a stunning and provocative literary debut that was a finalist for the YALSA Morris Award and was named to numerous best lists.

Pride Month: Day Twenty Six! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

This book is so beautiful yet heartbreaking! It's the story of a teen girl in the 80's who, after experiencing the death of her parents, gets caught kissing another girl and is sent to a religious reform 'camp' by her religious aunt.

I loved The Miseducation Of Cameron Post – it‘s a difficult read at times, but an immersive and impressive one, a must for fans of The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. While it‘s billed as a young adult novel, I think it will actually resonate most for adult-adults, the ones who actually grew up during or before Cameron‘s adolescence. This book is so heartbreakingly beautiful in so many ways. The depth of Cameron‘s story demonstrates the real inner struggles of finally accepting who you are. Every character in this story is special in some way. No filler here- every single small detail matters to some degree in some way to some person. I think I may have found my favorite book. Cannot recommend it enough

Day Three:

According to the ALA, last year 7 out of 10 of the most frequently banned books were because of LGBTQ content. This is infuriating! People need books (like the tagged one which has been banned often) so that they can see others like themselves and know they are not alone! 💖🏳️‍🌈 We all deserve to read the books we want without some other person censoring us!

Ruthiella I really think adults often underestimate what kids can handle when they read! (edited) 4y

Fantastic content and fantastic characters but a bit too long for my taste. I had the feeling that, as a teen, I would have struggled with the length and complexity of the text. It is an accurate and well-developed Bildungsroman but I found myself wishing, during the last 200 pages, for it to just be over already...
I might check the movie out now, though. I read that they changed the plot. Is it worth it??

One downside of reading on my Kindle is missing out on gorgeous physical editions like the beauty above ?????

Really enjoyed Cameron's story. Yeah, the pace is a little off but it's easy to overlook. Evocation of time & place is very good. The issues raised are done with sensitivity & sass and Cam is relatable & believable. The "pray away the gay" section is thought provoking and infuriating. Cont. in comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi Cont. from above. Didn't like the 'dead parents' schtick - don't think the story needed it & I personally have a real problem with this trope. Also I disliked the ending - the resolution was not the one I'd been hankering after. Still a very good read with lots to unpack. 5y

❤💛💚💙💜 🏳️‍🌈💕
I came out as bisexual when I was 16, and at the time the only place I felt safe enough to explore this new discovery was the library! 📚💕 Reading about characters who were the same as me was such a positive and empowering experience! I'm so grateful for the LGBTQ books (then and now) that help so many people realize they are not alone!

I really expected to enjoy this book and I honestly found it to be a bit slow and repetitive. I really liked the idea behind this book, but it just didn‘t grab my interest past the beginning. Good premise, but the writing was a bit off for me.

To call this book lovely, might be a bit of a stretch, but it is still the words that pops into my head upon finishing it. Cameron Post goes through all kinds of hardships, but I could have read 500 pages more, just to get to “be” with her a bit longer. A great example of the coming of age novel done well! 👌

I loved this book! It took me forever to read but I think that's because it took me on such an emotional rollercoaster of "what ifs" about my own life. I thought the writing was excellent. I do think that the Conversion Therapy center was a little mild from other stories I've read. I don't think the full horror of what goes on there was captured in this particular book. That's my only complaint.

In all the holiday hub bub, I did manage to finish a few books. I wanted to share how much I really loved this one. In high school I became a very strident fundamental evangelical Christian and in the last 6 years I've been dismantling that harmful theology. This book made me ache over the things I used to believe.
It was intensely engaging prose all the way through. Cameron's story is raw and honest. Well written young adult fiction.

ohyeahthatgirl That's a hard journey, but as someone with experience, it's absolutely worth it. 6y
SamanthaMarie @ohyeahthatgirl I'm a MUCH more loving and kind person now that I'm not worried about who is "in or out," "saved or unsaved," etc. It definitely messed with me especially early in my dating with my now husband. I could go on. But I'm so glad to hear you say that. ♡ 6y

Boxes, boxes everywhere!

I‘m having a hard time with the second half of this book. I have a huge aversion to people shoving religion at me. Who says it‘s sinful to have same sex attractions? The idea that anyone believes this really pisses me off. Pray the gay away camps are the biggest crock, as are any families who can‘t accept their kids for who they are. 🤬🤬🤬

Poor Cam. I want to break in and rescue the whole band of kids. 🏳️‍🌈proud.

Soubhiville On the other hand, the author did a great job, because I have major feelings right now. (Or is that the impending move anxiety talking...?) 6y

#BookMail Pt3 from today was this Special Pride Edition Of this classic #queerbook by Emily.M.Danforth. Cameron Post is a normal American small town girl until her mother dies and all she can think about is that she now doesn‘t have to tell her that she likes to kiss girls. Sent to live with her ultra conservative aunt, she falls for a cute girl in town and gets sent to one of those “re education” camps to Pray the gay away. Coz that works.🤨

After seeing the trailer for the movie, I really wanted to read the book. Such a great piece of contemporary literary fiction with a great LQBTQ+ character. I love that it's about a girl. I feel when it comes to LQBTQ books the main characters are guys - which I could possibly be wrong about - and it's rare to read a story where the main character is a girl struggling with her sexual orientation. #lqtbqplus #youngadult #readya #summerreads
