Of Mice and Men: Teacher's Deluxe Edition
Of Mice and Men: Teacher's Deluxe Edition | John Steinbeck
Penguin Classics presents John Steinbecks classic tale as an eBook enhanced with ten exclusive video clips featuring students responses, questions for classroom discussions, and an American Dream assignment Nobel Prize-winner John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men remains one of America's most widely read and taught novels. An unlikely pair, George and Lennie, two migrant workers in California during the Great Depression, grasp for their American Dream. Laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations, nor predict the consequences of Lennie's unswerving obedience to the things George taught him. Of Mice and Men: Teachers Edition includes the following: An introduction and suggested further reading by Susan Shillinglaw, a professor of English at San Jose State University and Scholar-in-Residence at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas The poem To a Mouse, On Turning Her Up in Her Nest with the Plough, November 1785 by Robert Burns (the original source of Steinbecks title Of Mice and Men) The 1962 Nobel Banquet Speech by John Steinbeck An exclusive audio interview with award-winning actor James Earl Jones on his stage performances in Of Mice and Men Ten exclusive videos of students on major themes from the novel tied to group discussion questions included in the eBook, and an American Dream assignment, for the ultimate educational experience

Lennie and George have a plan to work to earn enough money for a little plot of land of their very own. But things start to go wrong as soon as they‘ve reported for work.

I can understand how this became a classic. Steinbeck is a pro at setting a scene and creating engaging characters. But god this is a desolate little novella. I‘m just left feeling sad. 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

An almost-perfect novella, really. But it's got a bleakness to it that made me feel like I wanted to take off into the woods & never find civilisation again. It's a pick, if you want to ponder why it is people do the things they do to each other. Was there a time when people were intrinsically valued for just being, instead of whether they were of any use? An objectively good book but now I feel like shit (well, more than usual). Thanks, John 😢

BarbaraBB I read it as a teenager and wasn‘t impressed at all. Then again in my thirties and I was devastated. So I guess I feel you 😌 10mo
Ruthiella Not read it but familiar with the story. I‘ll keep it in mind for when I want my soul to be crushed. 10mo

Doppoetry I've read this for school (years ago) and that's how Steinbeck became one of my favorite writers. 😅 He had such a deep understanding of humans and each of his books are sad in different ways. 10mo

Reggie Yikes!!!!! Great review! 10mo
batsy @Doppoetry This is my first time reading (and only my second Steinbeck after East of Eden). I'll have to tackle Grapes of Wrath next. 10mo
batsy @UwannaPublishme Thank you! Your description is perfect. I think the length of this was also its strength; the reader is dropped into this world and then left reeling at the ramifications. 10mo
batsy @Reggie Thanks, Reggie! 10mo

Amiable @batsy I highly recommend Steinbeck‘s nonfiction if you are up for another go with him: 10mo
batsy @Amiable I totally hear you re: the news. On many levels it's all quite bleak. Thank you for the nonfiction rec; definitely planning on reading more Steinbeck. Just need to space it out 😅 Feel like Grapes of Wrath is one of those that I must get to. 10mo
Amiable @batsy I read “Grapes of Wrath” years ago and loved it. Look forward to your review when you read it. 10mo
Suet624 I have so many thoughts after reading the comments here. This review captures everything about this book. I think Grapes of Wrath will also give you a run for the hills feeling but nevertheless it's a must read. And I agree that you may want to grab Travels with Charley for a bit of relief. 10mo
batsy @Suet624 Thanks for your thoughts, Sue. I read East of Eden sometime back thanks to a Litsy buddy read and it was also pretty devastating. 10mo
CarolynM I‘ve always avoided this one because I fear feeling the way you‘ve described. 10mo
batsy @CarolynM I totally get it. It helps that it was short. 10mo
Centique I know what you mean! For me, Grapes of Wrath was the one that made me want to step off into an abyss. Make sure you are in a stable place when you tackle it 💕 10mo
vivastory I've had Steinbeck on my mind a lot lately for some reason. I think it's because I've always seen him as a good substitute for Hemingway (who I don't esp care for). Last yr I read The Moon Is Down & thought it was great, Was it groundbreaking political allegory on the scale of Orwell of Huxley? No. But, it was a substantial, quick read & I def want to read more of his novellas. I think he should be rated HIGHER than Hemingway (edited) 10mo
batsy @vivastory I'm not familiar with Moon and I'm making a note to add it to my list. I don't care for Hemingway either; I had to read both Hemingway and Steinbeck for an intro to American Lit class and couldn't get into both then, but definitely glad I gave Steinbeck a chance again with a buddy read here on Litsy for East of Eden. I'll have to tackle Grapes of Wrath next. 10mo

This book is more than the words on the pages. There‘s so much more to understand, so much more to learn, and so much more to fall in love with. It‘s ridiculous the hold this book and it‘s characters has on me. George and Lennie will always have such a special place in my heart, their relationship is one in a million. Steinbeck was an incredible author, and I might even go as far as to say that he is my ‘favourite‘ author.

Obviously, 5⭐️!

Engrossed from beginning to end. Steinbeck‘s Of Mice and Men transforms the bond of friendship displaying that the search for happiness is happiness itself with a friendship, even one so inverse as the relationship between George and Lennie. The ending could be thought of as the antithesis of friendship but was depicted on my humble opinion a kindness paid in the hardest way possible.

Leftcoastzen Beautiful edition! 1y

I often heard references to this book, and because of the #authoramonth2023 #johnsteinbeck challenge, I now understand all the buzz. George and Lennie travel to the Salinas Valley in California to work on a ranch during the Great Depression. Lennie is a man of tremendous size, but has the mind of a child. George is small and quick, and does his best to protect his friend. Spare, beautiful writing. Tragic. Unforgettable. #1937 #192025

dabbe When I would show the Gary Sinise-John Malcovich movie version after my juniors read it, you could hear sniffles out in the audience, especially from the teenage boys. And they already had read it and knew what was coming! And this one reads almost like a drama, doesn't it? The dialogue is already beautifully written, and each chapter is a new setting. I love this book. ❣️ 2y

I haven‘t read this in years and years, but it still has the effect on me that it did then. George and Lenny are friends in a world of migrant workers where no one has friends. These are my two reads for #AuthorAMonth. I feel that classics have an advantage over historical fiction in situating the reader in a certain time. Mice in particular was insightful into the conditions of Depression-era work and views on intellectual disability. It‘s my first time reading Steinbeck since high school, and while I enjoyed these, two is enough. 😉 Both were well narrated, especially Gary Sinise performing Mice.

Cinfhen Gary Sinese narratedTravels with Charley, which really elevated my appreciation of Steinbeck‘s writing 2y

Can you believe I got through 13 years of education without ever having to read Of Mice and Men?! I have mixed feelings. It‘s so well written and Steinbeck brings the hard, lonely life of the drifters to life with the lightest of touches. But I found Lennie disturbing and didn‘t like how he was presented as a sympathetic character - even though he had sexually assaulted one woman and killed another. Lots to talk about at book club tonight!

wanderinglynn I was never assigned this book in school either. 2y

Of Mice And Men is messed up. M.E.S.S.E.D. U.P!

It‘s a short novel, but it‘s brutal and terribly sad. It‘s masterfully written – no notes on that front! – but it‘s far from an enjoyable read. Devastating. Nightmare fuel. I am exceedingly glad I was not compelled to read it as an angsty adolescent, as I‘m quite confident I never would have recovered. Another classic I felt guilty I hadn't read yet.
Lennie's heart-wrenching tragedy and the Great Depression with its devastating impact on rural communities will stay with me for a while.

slategreyskies I haven‘t read this one yet either. I think it would be a tough read (emotionally, I mean). On a side note, it saddens me that all of the people I knew who lived through the Great Depression are dead now. Still, I remember their stories, so not all of their memories and experience died with them. I‘m glad there are books like this that tell important stories. 2y

About halfway-through Of Mice and Men, as one of the few readers who hasn't studied it at school. I'm rather underwhelmed so far. I know because I read the introduction that it was written as a play/novel hybrid, so I shouldn't complain, but there's too much dialogue and not enough depth for my liking.

The title of “Of Mice and Men“ is an allusion to a Robert Burns' poem, which points out that the plans of mice and men often go awry. The author uses this allusion to foreshadow the events of the novel, cluing in the reader that some plan of the characters in the novel will go awry.

#OnThisDay in 1937, Of Mice and Men was published. Originally titled "Something That Happened" its final title was taken from Robert Burns' poem "Of a Mouse". Lennie was based on a real ranch hand he worked with (yes, the pitchfork thing happened. To a ranch foreman, not a girl, Steinbeck was a witness). One of the most challenged books of the 21st c., it almost didn't see publication when Steinbeck's dog Max ate the first draft. #HistoryGetsLIT

I read some wonderful books and grew a lot of vegetables 🌶 🌽
Stay healthy and happy in 2022🌻✌🏼

Hard to read because of the way it‘s written. The storyline and twists were worth it, though. Gets into deep themes and helps you ask relevant questions. Love the twist and the ending.

Excellent and very accessible. A short novel and a very quick read.

This short story captures such understanding and loyalty between friends. On a big-picture societal commentary level it has such a sadness to it by putting dreams next to despondent realities. You know how the story is going to end from the very start. You can‘t help but feel the weight of apathy creep in.-
