Anastasia Allen has worked her entire life for a shot at Team USA. A competitive figure skater since she was five years old, a full college scholarship thanks to her place on the Maple Hills skating team, and a schedule that would make even the most driven person weep, Stassie comes to win. No exceptions. Nathan Hawkins has never had a problem he couldn't solve. As captain of the Maple Hills Titans, he knows the responsibility of keeping the hockey team on the ice rests on his shoulders. When a misunderstanding results in the two teams sharing a rink, and Anastasia's partner gets hurt in the aftermath, Nate finds himself swapping his stick for tights, and one scary coach for an even scarier one. The pair find themselves stuck together in more ways than one, but it's fine, because Anastasia doesn't even like hockey players...right?

I absolutely loved this book! The sweet frenemies to lovers trope! The sweet ending about how they made a future together and had a baby. Through their trials and tribulations they ended up together and on top and it was overall a super sweet novel with some spicy scenes. It was exactly what I wanted to read going into this holiday season. It's a romance novel I'd highly recommend:)

Icebreaker is a completely unrealistic wish-fulfillment spicy romance novel, and I won‘t have anyone disparage it on those grounds. It does exactly what it does on the tin, and it does it well. It‘s a delightful, satisfying read – one million #Bookstagrammers can‘t be wrong! Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/icebreaker-hannah-grace/

I did not like the epilogue of this book. I am glad that the characters ended up happy but it seemed so...off putting? I just felt like the epilogue was extremely rushed and almost too good to be true. I think it would have been better if they focused on Stassie winning gold. It would have been full circle and a happy ending without being too rushed or idealistic.

I thought that Stassie's friendship with Aaron was really interesting/odd. On one hand, I think their relationship could illustrate how sometimes people stay in situations that are not best for them. While this is painful to read, it does happen so portraying Stassie's struggle with Aaron could help those struggling with toxic relationships. On the other hand, Aaron was just terrible. I don't really think that he should have had a redemption arc.

One thing that I did enjoy about this book was the peak that we got into the lives of a student athlete. I have not participated in competitive sports since middle school so I am not too familiar with all that goes into being a college athlete. I had no idea how specific and intense all of the training, diets, planning, etc are. I appreciated the discussion of anxiety that came along with this as well as it showed us the good and the bad.

I chose to read this book as one of my choice reads because I have heard so much about it and its...questionable reputation. I have seen many teachers and librarians on tik Tok discussing how this book has been popular amongst younger readers despite some of its content. I was still, however, surprised to see it on the list of top teen books. As many have discussed, the cover is almost misleading, the book does seem to be YA lit at first glance.

1. Yup. My friends and I would bet on our March Madness brackets. Winner takes the pot. That is the limit of my gambling...minus some friendly betting on the Bachelor/Bachelorette contestants back in the day (we made teams before the first night).

2. Tagged book was the only one I could think of. I'm not really drawn to sports related books.

I would definitely not suggest this novel to a young adult reader, but there are aspects of Nathan and Anastasia's story that could be used as learning moments for older readers. Hannah Grace, in my opinion, did a great job writing about the complexity of relationships--both platonic and romantic--and a number of other delicate topics. Not a YA book, but still enjoyable!

I think this novel did a really good job of broaching the subject of toxic relationships. It was difficult to read about the main character Anastasia's struggles with her manipulative skating partner, Aaron, and how his toxicity affected her health and well-being, but I think the author was very respectful in how she wrote about the situation.

blurb

One thing I appreciate about this novel is how it tackled conflict resolution and communication. Though the main characters are young and in college, they are mature in how they work out most of their conflicts by being open and honest about how/what they are feeling. As someone who reads a lot of romance novels, I would say that this novel has one of the best representations of a healthy, communicative relationship I have read recently.

I‘m reviewing this book in a high school setting; I would not recommend or keep this in my classroom library. I would not say this is appropriate at all for young adults who have developing brains and are a little more prone to making unwise decisions—-in a classroom. Now if they wanted to read this in their free time, that is one thing, of course. But as a teacher, I couldn‘t recommend this to a student because of the raunchiness of it.

Alexa_Cussans I agree. I have not read this book, but I‘ve heard a lot about it. It sounds very sexually explicit. Content like that is inappropriate in a classroom setting and teachers should not be promoting literature like this. 5mo

I kind of sped through this book because I‘m on vacation and that‘s literally all I do. Overall, I think it had a good storyline, but I have found that I am not really into the genre of books. I thought I may be because I do like a good romcom, but this was a little too much for me. Their storyline is cute with them bonding over sharing the ice, with the frenemies to lovers trope, but it just does not have a deeper level of meaning that I enjoy.

I think it‘s safe to say that this novel should not be on a YA book list! I would not recommend this to anyone under the age of 18 as it features a lot of sexually explicit content. I would label this book as a new adult or adult novel. All that aside, I think this is a really enjoyable book so far. It seems to feature a cast of fun, diverse characters and has already touched on subjects like consent, disordered eating, and toxic relationships.

sarabeth_donaldson It‘s interesting that you point out the age group of the audience of this book. I think this is one of the debates in deciding what students should read, and at what grade levels. Even if students don‘t read this as a class, do you think it would be appropriate for a teacher to have it in their classroom for students to pick up at any time? 6mo
TheBookHippie @sarabeth_donaldson it‘s in our high school library. I don‘t find it any different than all the middle and high school girls reading COHO (Colleen Hoover) or countless many others. But I‘m waaay more lax on this than most people. It‘s listed as most loved book for 8th & 9th graders 😅in our book poll at school. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6mo
Alexa_Cussans I was super shocked to find this book on the YA reading list! I haven‘t read it, but I‘ve heard it‘s super mature. I agree with your opinion on it being considered adult instead of YA. 5mo

This book is odd. I like the rare romance book but this something else. I refer to it as #hockeyporn hockey romance is a genre unto itself now, who knew. Maybe it‘s the age of the people, maybe it‘s the porn influences 🤷🏻‍♀️ I finished it just to see how it would end. I like the consent aspect and it did have some variety in ethnicities and sexual orientation.

I‘m about 50 pages in, and so far it‘s great. However, I don‘t know that this is a Y/A book. There‘s a lot of maturity that I am sure is appropriate for older high school kids (17&18), but I do not think I would advertise it, just because of how prominent sexual themes. The two main characters are college aged, so I wouldn‘t think 14/15/16 are necessarily in the right mindset to read it but I will be more definite on that when I get further in.

ms.reagan I was so surprised to see this book listed as YA. I‘ve read it before, and it is definitely not appropriate for students under the age of like 18. It has a lot of mature content and I don‘t think that younger students have the maturity to handle it honestly. 5mo

Ok so I chose this book honestly because there is a craze on the hockey romance. It‘s been on my mind because I always see it at target🤫. But so far, it feels like most any other romcom/YA romance book. Getting to know both the main characters before their introduction has been a refreshing part. I love books with multiple perspectives so this has been fun for me and I‘m ready for Anastasia and Nate to meet 🎊🎊

amw40488 This is going to be one of my choice readings too! I've actually read it before, and I'm a bit conflicted about this being listed as a YA novel, but I'm excited to hear your thoughts on it :) 6mo
mcctrish @amw40488 I‘m a bit conflicted with this being YA too ( I‘m halfway through and I appreciate the consent, stocking ‘girl supplies‘ but it‘s pretty hard core sexy times for kids who aren‘t financially independent and without full frontal cortexes) 6mo

2 ⭐There is nothing about this book that appeals to me. I know this book is a booktok, darling. I know librarians of TikTok who manage middle school libraries saying this book comes up for a lot of middle schoolers as their favorite book. Or as a book, they should be added to the collection. I also know that this book is not intended for middle school at all. It is a new adult steamy romcom. I know that this cover makes this book look like

LibrarianRyan a closed door cutie teen romcom that may be appropriate for middle grade. It‘s not it. It‘s a new adult erotica style book. You have a college ice skater and a college hockey player. One of the skating rinks is vandalized so they all must share one rink. Of course, the hockey player gets together with the ice-skater. I‘m trying to figure out why so many people love this book. I find the woman annoying. I need some actual story not just sex to 6mo
LibrarianRyan make a book entertaining. And if the two aren‘t having sex then they‘re describing it or describing the actions with the boyfriends. Or, they are being made fun of by their other friends for their sexual escapades. Seriously there‘s no plot in what i have already read. I know people say page 136. I‘m reading a digital e-book so my page number don‘t match but I‘m at page 100 and could care less. I find the female character to be a snotty 6mo
LibrarianRyan perfectionist who is constantly worried about her weight and getting big which is annoying. And the jock has almost no personality, except I carry a big stick and a bang on my chest movement with thoughts of being a sex god. This is not geared towards me and it‘s that belongs with Fifty Shades of Grey i.e. in the recycle bin. There is better stuff out there. This is not a book for middle school. I can see why younger teens in the fresh Bloom of 6mo
See All 9 Comments
LibrarianRyan puberty find this exciting and romantic but at the same time I feel bad that they‘re missing out on actual good material so they can read this. If it‘s not noticeable, this book was a DNF. I have no desire to finish it or pick up any others. 6mo
Prairiegirl_reading Middle schoolers!!?? No! 6mo
LibrarianRyan @Prairiegirl_reading yeah. The number of MS librarians who talk about asking the kids their favorite book, or what books to add to the collection. This book and many by Collen Hoover. It's sad. 6mo
Prairiegirl_reading @LibrarianRyan wow that is so disturbing!! (edited) 6mo
mcctrish I‘m reading this right now, I put a hold on it at the library ( thank god I didn‘t buy it ) and I have concerns. I like the consent message, the stocking of ‘girl supplies‘ message but no boys are reading this so who‘s getting that message? Girls know what to look for and just get disappointed? Or they tell their male friends to do this? Anastasia bugs me too and Nathan is large and that‘s really the only prerequisite needed in romance. 6mo

willaful I actually think Nate has been showing red flags too. Luckily S. is very good at addressing them, so it doesn't put me off their relationship. She can hold her own.

I also think she has a valid point. She has a dream, and finding a skating partner is very difficult. Even my mom went through this, as an adult amateur. I'd like to think the book comes up with a way to solve this but I dunno how. Unless Henry decides to take up figure skating. 😁

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.40-42: First, we finally get the interruption we all saw coming and Nate‘s dad and sister show up. Well that was awkward- at least it wasn‘t as embarrassing as it could‘ve been. Good for Stasie for standing up to his dad. And it felt like Nate might have even had a moment with his dad after…maybe. But I sense trouble on the horizon. ⬇️

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.34-36: I‘m so glad their visit went well with Stasie‘s parents. I worry that Nate‘s dad is going to show up unannounced and ruin their Christmas though. vonnie862 Aaron is definitely toxic and Stasie needs to get away. 9mo
OriginalCyn620 @vonnie862 Absolutely 💯 9mo

willaful Anyone else thinks on her new diet Stasie will be able to do the jump? I hope she gets some professional help for her disordered eating. 9mo
willaful I actually don't know if Brady is intended to be a good coach or not, but there is a long history of coaches taking terrible care of female athletes. Starvation is only the tip of the iceberg. :-( (edited) 9mo
willaful More thoughts: I was irked by Stasie's comment about “letting every sliver of feminism shrivel up and die.“ It's not unfeminist to be a straight woman attracted to men, and I hate those casual digs that show up so often in romance.

And I was icked out by Nathan's mother-daughter adventure. Yikes! 🤢

maich @vonnie862 @willaful I agree with both you. New diet will make her stronger and she'll be able to do the jump. And I hope she'll find new partner. I wish I could see Nathan in leggings😋 That scene was funny. And then coach comments🤣 It was funny comment but I can feel her (I had problems with bladder infection all the time).🙈 9mo
vonnie862 @maich I too would like to see him in leggings! 9mo
maich @vonnie862 😜🥰 9mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.22-24: Ouch. I can‘t imagine what Stasie is going through after being dropped. How scary! That sport is intense. So now Nate has offered to be her skating partner - and keep his hands off her - so to speak. Ha! Good luck with that. These two are - respectfully - horndogs. We‘ll see how long their self imposed sex hiatus goes.

OriginalCyn620 Nate and Stasie being partners is gonna be so good! I‘m hoping for some The Cutting Edge vibes! And I don‘t think they‘ll keep their hands off each other long. And I‘m speaking as a former college horndog, so that‘s just my opinion! (edited) 9mo
vonnie862 It's gonna be interesting for sure! Also, I'm happy that Stasie admitted to herself of having feelings for Nate. 9mo

Read4life I‘m hoping for Cutting Edge vibes, too, @OriginalCyn620 ⛸️ I keep hearing “Toe pick” as I‘m reading. 🤓 9mo
OriginalCyn620 @Read4life 🤣🤣🤣 9mo
julieclair This was such a sweet offer by Nate! It will be fun to watch him try to learn the figure skating moves. 9mo
maich @Read4life 🤣🤣🤣 no sex scene anymore. Will see how long will they last. It was so nice for him that he's helping her. And he has fallen for her.🥰 9mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.19-21: I knew it would be Aaron that would cause problems. I feel as though He did this to himself to bring Stasie back to him. What a weird manipulative dude.

I liked the therapy session. Stasie is smart and understands what‘s happening which is refreshing. Here‘s hoping she talks to Nate.

willaful I'm starting to wonder if Aaron's mother was scared by a hockey player in early pregnancy. 😆 Or more seriously, whether he has a mental illness. Stasie's eggshell walking around him makes me think.

Did anyone find the sex scenes here a bit OTT? I feel like so far it has all been within the realm of realistic, sex positive college life, but Nathan is going deep into romance hero mode and it's putting me off.

BethM I need this to resolve quickly. The ick and abuse factor is way too much. 9mo

julieclair @willaful I was wondering about mental illness as well. And if he does, will it be acknowledged? 9mo
OriginalCyn620 I had the same thought about Aaron @StayCurious. Does anyone else think that Stasie should become a solo skater? Because I really do! 9mo
maich @OriginalCyn620 I think the same. She should try solo. I don't like Aaron from the beginning. He is hypocritical and need to go to therapy too. 9mo

I was not prepared for the 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ level in this book! I definitely won‘t be reading it in public anymore!!

StayCurious Right? I was prepared for some spice (like New Adult spice - nothing too flavourful😜) and have been very surprised 9mo
Roary47 One of my students was talking about this book. She told me that it‘s too much spice. As a high schooler I‘m just glad she didn‘t like it because of that. 😅😮‍💨 9mo
Jill72797 You‘re right…the cover sure doesn‘t give it away! 9mo
