Mom and Me and Mom
Mom and Me and Mom | Maya Angelou
'In the first decade of the twentieth century, it was not a good time to be born black, or woman, in America.' So begins this stunning portrait of Vivian Baxter Johnson: the first black woman officer in the Merchant Marines, purveyor of a gambling business and rooming house, and mother to Maya Angelou, beloved and bestselling author I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS. 'A brilliant writer, a fierce friend and a truly phenomenal woman' BARACK OBAMA Anyone who's read the classic, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, knows Maya Angelou was raised by her paternal grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. In Mom & Me & Mom, Angelou details what brought her mother to send her away and unearths the well of emotions Angelou experienced long afterward as a result. While Angelou's six autobiographies tell of her out in the world, influencing and learning from statesmen and cultural icons, Mom & Me & Mom shares the intimate, emotional story about her own family. 'She moved through the world with unshakeable calm, confidence and a fierce grace . . . She will always be the rainbow in my clouds' OPRAH WINFREY 'She was important in so many ways. She launched African American women writing in the United States. She was generous to a fault. She had nineteen talents - used ten. And was a real original. There is no duplicate' TONI MORRISON

#MayMoms - Mom in Title: I didn‘t know for awhile that this book was considered a part of Maya Angelou‘s autobiographical series. It makes sense though that it would be since it brings her narrative full circle. Back to the one who gave her life, not created her life, but carried her living self safely inside at the beginning. Though that mother abandons her children (relocates them far from her to live thousands of miles away in another state👇🏽

Nute with their grandmother), they find their way back to one another and to a reconciling relationship. This mother is allowed to assume the position of “gap-stander” as her daughter becomes a mother and faces the challenges of grownup relationships, motherhood and the struggles of single parenting. These two women as mother & daughter and then daughter & mother gain lessons of grace, mercy, compassion, tenderness and care.👇🏽 2y
Nute It‘s a profound journey to come back to the beginning through the lens of forgiveness as a parent child relationship is reflected on.

The entire series is Highly Recommended!

This was my first Maya Angelou read and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her reading her own work. Both Angelou and her mother were strong, fearless women who faced some really harsh moments. Somehow, they always found a way to rise above adversity. And, after a rocky beginning, both supported one another unconditionally in adulthood. I look forward to reading Angelou's other biographies as well. #AuthorAMonth

Dr. Angelou led such an incredible life. This book focuses on her adult relationship with her mother. Vivian was not made to be a mother of children, but she was tremendously supportive of Maya as an adult. Like Maya, she was a tough woman who broke barriers for her family and all women. Even though Vivian was in-and-out of her daughter‘s life, she showed up at the times Maya needed her most. Read the #audiobook if you can! #AuthorAMonth

#DoubleSpin #AAM This reads like the follow up to Angelou‘s iconic earlier memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. It‘s the story of Maya & her mom after they‘ve been reunited. It‘s also the last book written & recorded before Ms. Angelou‘s death. She was a very formidable woman, who achieved much success and recognition despite a hard childhood filled with some very difficult and emotionally crippling events. Short but powerful audio.

I teach an excerpt from this book in 7th grade English class, but I had never read the whole book. I listened to the memoir read by the author, which was wonderful. It focuses on key moments in her relationship with her mother, spanning from her childhood to her mother‘s death. It is pretty short, so I listened to the full book today. #AuthorAMonth

This is the role of the mother. And in that visit I really saw clearly, for the first time, why a mother is really important. Not just because she feeds and also loves and also cuddles... but because in an interesting and and maybe an eerie and other worldly way, she stands in the gap. She stands between the unknown and the known.

I'm ashamed to say I've never read Maya Angelou before, though she's been on my list for a while. What a very interesting and varied life she led! That much is obvious even from this book which focuses on her relationship with her mother. The story of these two remarkable women is wonderful and their deep and fierce love for one another, despite a rocky beginning, is an inspiration.

Maya Angelou, without a doubt, has a way with words and gift for story telling. She draws you in to her life and shares it with you; every memory she chooses to tell is infused with meaning. I did listen to this on audiobook and thaf added a personal touch to the story as well.

My parents returned the books they borrowed the last time they were here. My dad read Tinkering with Eden, and my mom read the others. Well, The Princess Diarist was a DNF for her. I think Fisher was a bit too brash and upfront for my mom. The skinny book I bought when Mother Theresa passed away. It's a collection of quotes.

MS Angelou can do so little wrong in my eyes. Another wonderful memoir this one about the relationship she had with her mother. From the years she spend separated from her in early life through to her mother‘s passing. Beautifully written in that specific Angelou style.
Side note: if my next book makes my eyes sweat it might end up on the other side of the room.

tif I loved this one. But then again I love anything by Ms Angelou! She's just so darn good. 7y

xicanti @Texreader it is! I got the idea from a food-centric Japanese drama. The man character added a soft boiled egg to his instant ramen, and it looked so good that I had to try it. Now I never have ramen without one. 7y

How does one fit so much of themselves on the page? I stay in awe of Dr. Angelou. I need to do a full chronological read of her memoirs.

DivineDiana My sister and I read this in the summer. We discussed when I visited her in Seattle. I‘m in PA. It had us reminiscing about our Mother and what it means to us to be mothers. So much in such a small book. 7y
everlocalwest @DivineDiana That's so awesome that you guys shared that! My mom, sister, and myself used to meet monthly for dinner and to discuss our own mini book club for a few years until my sister moved away last year. We still talk about books of course, but a shared reading experience is something different. And this book is perfect for that kind of discussion! 7y

Woman crush Wednesday. I am absolutely in love with Maya Angelou. Her achievements in her life are so incredible. She was a poet and an activist. She fought for what she believed in. As mankind should always do... fight for what you love and believe in!

I confess to my shame that I heard of her after her death but I loved her from the first poem I read.

She truly is an inspiration.
