Brat: An '80s Story | Andrew McCarthy

Bk2 for June is done! If my readings not quite back to what it was, at least there‘s light at the end of the tunnel now thank god👍I enjoyed this memoir more than I thought I would, bring back so many memories of what the 80s were like for a teenager. Though for an actor that looked so cool onscreen, he was a total mess off it. Highly recommend. #BookspinBingo #BigJuneReadathon #NonFictionBingo #ImASurvivor #Pop21 #Booked2022 #ByAJournalist

Thanks to @britt_brooke for putting this book back on my #ReadersRadar 💚At 22, fresh from graduation ( Princeton) Sulieka Jaouad is diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia. This book traces her two journeys, living through cancer, living beyond cancer. While I thought this book might be ultimately hopeful, it was much sadder throughout than I was expecting. Suleika never holds back or sugarcoats any of her feelings or experiences.

Cinfhen #ReadingAfrica22 I‘m counting this for #Tunisia as author‘s father is from there and small parts of the story take place there @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB (edited) 3y
Librarybelle Very nice! This sounds like a book that should have tissues at the ready. 3y

Cinfhen Yes, very much so @Librarybelle 💔 3y
marleed I‘m follow her journey on Instagram, and I‘m so sad that her cancer has returned. Even in her current struggle she makes her hospital room a space of creativity. 3y
Cinfhen Ugh @marleed I was SO AFRAID her cancer was going to return 😪I was going to check on her progress. I will follow her on IG too!! 3y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I‘m so happy you picked this up. It‘s heartbreaking to know her cancer has returned. 3y

Mom & Me & Mom | Maya Angelou

#DoubleSpin #AAM This reads like the follow up to Angelou‘s iconic earlier memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. It‘s the story of Maya & her mom after they‘ve been reunited. It‘s also the last book written & recorded before Ms. Angelou‘s death. She was a very formidable woman, who achieved much success and recognition despite a hard childhood filled with some very difficult and emotionally crippling events. Short but powerful audio.

Cinfhen #NF22 Need to figure out where to box it @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 💕 3y

I‘ve been reading this collection all month, a section each day, and I love that I got to read the entire collection as one and see all the themes that ran through her life. Clifton‘s style is direct, which makes it easy to connect to on an emotional level, and can also make it gut wrenching depending on the subject, like her poems on sexual abuse by her father that just cut to the quick. #Nonfiction2022 #ImASurvivor @Riveted_Reader_Melissa

It‘s a hell of a town, and Dyja looks at several angles from the 1970s to the late 2010s. He writes about the rise and fall of some political figures (Koch, Bloomberg, Giuliani, Trump), the movement of the art/artists around the city, Black culture and the hip hop scene, and gay culture and the AIDS epidemic. New York is a place of constant change and rebirth, and this book captures it well. #audiobook

Cinfhen Oh cool! I own this audio 😉 3y
Megabooks @JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m unsure. If he said so in the prologue, I don‘t remember it. (But I wasn‘t listening for it either.) 3y
