Sense and Sensibility
Sense and Sensibility | Joanna Trollope
A beloved and internationally bestselling author s contemporary retelling of Jane Austen s classic novel of love, money and two very different sistersWhen their father unexpectedly dies, the three Dashwood girls Elinor, Marianne and Margaret must face the harsh reality of a life where they no longer have the home or the financial security that they have always taken for granted. As they come to terms with life without the comforts of either their country house or an inheritance, Elinor, a sensible architecture student, and Marianne, a passionate, musical free spirit, are also confronted by a world where their choices are abruptly limited by their new and alarming circumstances. With her trademark insight and wit, Joanna Trollope has brought Austen s characters and their story into the 21st century. In the timeless spirit of their creator, she casts a clever, gently satirical eye on Elinor and Marianne as they are forced to navigate the modern world and the search for love. The results are both heartbreaking and hilarious, but always, in the hands of consummate storyteller Trollope, hugely entertaining and achingly true to life. Reimagining "Sense and Sensibility" in a fresh and contemporary light, Trollope recasts this beloved coming-of-age story as a perfect tale for our times."

A low pick, I liked this retelling, but it often seemed to be set in Austen‘s time instead of contemporary times. It wasn‘t until a cell phone was mentioned in the first few chapters that I knew the time period. Edward‘s situation is a little far-fetched in the modern world. It closely follows Austen‘s plot, has some villains to root against, & I liked the family.

Bailing on this one. The characters whine all the time and I didn‘t like how the book went about to modernize S&S. The original is great (and still relevant- it doesn‘t really need modernizing! Ha!) My motto is: Life is too short to read books I don‘t like, so I had to bail on this one. Sorry #PemberLittens 🤷🏼‍♀️

AllisonM89 YES! Life is too short for books you don't like! Definitely!

A sore disappointment. There is nothing modern in this book, unless you consider a text sprinkled with references to Facebook, YouTube and Twitter modern. Most of the characters are sleepwalking through the demands and opportunities of life in the 21st century. I'm also angry because the beloved cast of the original novel are made extremely unlikeable in this adaptation.

Sorry #PemberLittens but I‘m bailing on this one. I see how this one can be a hard one to modernize, but the way the author is going about it is hard to buy in the 21st century.

This is a hard plot to update - what in the 21st century would make one honor-bound to marry someone he didn‘t love? So while Edward is more likable in some ways, his behavior is less forgivable. And Elinor seemed less a person of well-regulated temper and more a martyr. That said, Willoughby and Brandon are well done, the primogeniture plot neatly managed, and Mr. Palmer a more developed character. Quick & fun, but not Austen.

#bookreport @Cinfhen
Pretty disappointing week of reading....
Finished both, but both were decidedly #Mehnotyeah
- #unpopularopinion time... Although I liked the story itself, I found the writing of Erotic Stories to be pretty poor.
- After loving ‘Eligible‘, I had high hopes of this Austen Project novel...but this one just didn‘t work for me. The premise was not updated enough, so just didn‘t work in its modern day setting. 👎

squirrelbrain I didn‘t love Erotic Stories either; I liked it but that was all...nothing special. 5y

So disappointed in this one. 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Jane Austen is rolling over in her grave right now. So much was copied from the original and the author attempted to make it more “modern” by dropping in Twitter, Facebook, and iPad. It didn‘t work with the story at all. Disappointing read.

I don‘t think this one translates well to modern day story telling. It‘s okay but it still didn‘t have a modern feeling. Also again with young people using “modern” lingo that I‘ve never heard a young person use, unless it‘s ironically. Some of the characters a bit undeveloped, still I knew this was probably going to happen so I did try to enjoy the story as much as I could.
I love the idea of the retelling but so far eligible has been the best.

Day19 #SeasonsReadings2016 #silhouettesoncovers Two covers I own with silhouettes--one I've read & one I keep saying I will read. For Trollope's Sense & Sensibility from The Austen Project, I think the cover survived the updating to contemporary times more than the story did. Night Circus has been on my TBR forever & I finally bought a copy a couple of months ago (baby steps). Maybe I'll get it worked into a challenge so I get it read in 2017. 📚

It's basically like reading the original with mentions of tweeting grafted in. That's the main problem with it: The setting is modernized, but not the plot, even at a basic level--not even age bumps for Elinor and Marianne. I think these Austen Project books can either be proper modern updates or adhere closely to the originals, not both. S&S and NA tried for both and suffered for it, Eligible went for the actual update and mostly succeeded.

Reviewsbylola I bought this because I loved Eligible but I am scared to read it because of the reviews. S&S was my least favorite Austen so I am not really interested in reading it again. 8y
Sfox414 @reviewsbylola Ah see I really like Sense & Sensibility, so that saved it a bit, since I thought the writing here was better than in NA, and Marianne and Elinor at least are spot-on. But yeah, the story here is pretty much beat-for-beat--no fun spins on the original like with Eligible or something like Clueless. I don't know, maybe I'm being too harsh on it--I definitely want to hear what you think when you read it! 8y
Reviewsbylola It has been probably ten years since I read S&S so maybe I'll like it this time around. That's what I'm hoping at least! 8y
