First in a translated series. A Nordic procedural featuring a young detective with a complicated traumatic past. A series of murders and an investigation that uncovers a frightening conspiracy. The twisty twisted plot was less satisfying than the revelations and relationships of the MC, but the short chapters and narration increased the tension and propelled the story. A 3.5 ⭐️ pick. The sequel will go on my TBR list.
Finished the first book after reading the second book first. Opps! A lot about the second book is easier to understand now. I enjoyed this book but wished they had gotten to the ending a bit sooner so there was more time to go into the details. I felt like the book was filled with too much “fluff” and could have gotten to the good stuff a lot faster or into greater detail. On to the third book now.
For me, meh. Overall entertaining, but you‘ll have to suspend some disbelief to completely enjoy. I will continue the series due to my curiosity, and my insatiable need for closure. Beware, there are some violent & disturbing scenes.
3.5 out of 5 stars
Not quite Jo Nesbø but ultimately delivered everything I wanted from a Nordic Noir novel. The Witch Hunter is compelling, there‘s a lot going on (serial killer= many murders) and that was exactly what I needed in a book right now. Formatting edits might have made the shifting timelines clearer, but they worked to build some characterisation that was relevant to the narrative. I‘ll definitely be reading the follow-up.
Maybe it‘s just my headspace, but this one didn‘t do it for me
Finnish Malleus Maleficarum witches on the loose.
Certainly creepy & with some genuinely scary parts, if a bit hard to follow storyline.
But yes, recommended. ‘Tis approaching the season, after all. 💀🎃👻
For anyone interested in reading a book set in #Finland, written by a #Finnish author, this one is ‘read now‘ on #NetGalley. This is the first book in he series. Yes, Nordic noir, and a woman in a red coat 😂 Also available as read now The Ice Coven, published in a few weeks.
I really, really enjoyed this US debut by Max Seeck. A good combination of action and police procedural. I enjoyed the characters and especially, the female lead, Jessica. I believe this might be the first in a series, I look forward to the next one! 4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
A murder in a Helsinki suburb has ties to witchcraft and the occult. Investigator, Jessica Noemi, soon realizes she‘s not looking for a single killer but rather dozens of believers of witchcraft. Bodies are piling up and Jessica is battling her own demons. Will Jessica be the next victim? I‘m now looking forward to reading the 2nd book in this new series. Excellent debut with interesting characters, good writing and twists that keep pages turning.
Apparently this one is supposed to be read by lots of Americans. It‘s on the B&N‘s thriller of the month list, and it‘ll soon be a TV series as well. Finland is so bad at getting books onto English language markets, so this is really cool! @EadieB
