Having a rough time with this book. It is beautifully written as Junot Diaz always is. However, it‘s difficult to connect with the characters. They feel kept at a distance, and the stories are disjointed. So little to redeem them (abuse in all forms), they are tough to root for. 😢 #FoodandLit #DominicanRepublic

"Drown" is one of those books that makes you think about ideologies after you read it. Yunior struggles with his definition of masculinity and slowly turns into the type of man he hates because his views of masculinity are extremely rigid and finite. I am glad I am reading this for a book club because I definitely need to discuss the book and elevate some of the ideological pressure presented here.

I finished this yesterday. I really enjoyed this book. It's beautifully written. I've been listening to Drown as an audiobook. I'm enjoying it just as much. I look forward to reading more stuff by Díaz.

I read this for my short story collection by a POC author for #litsyreadingchallenge2018. Honestly, I only chose it because it was included for free in the audiobook copy of his other book, which I already owned. Probably an unpopular opinion, but I just didn‘t like it. I‘m not sure I can say exactly why, though. I didn‘t care for his other book either, so maybe he‘s just not the author for me.

This was a bonus audio at the end of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. I‘m not big on short stories but I really, really enjoyed these stories. Some take place in the Dominican Republic, some are stories of the people from The Dominican Republic making a life New York & New Jersey.

Raw dispatches from the tarnished promise of the American Dream, these linked short stories following immigrants from the Dominican Republic nevertheless exude both humor and heart. The language was vibrant even when describing despair, and I love how Díaz‘s characters pop up across his works, like he created his own little microcosm.

vivastory I really need to read more Diaz. I'm kicking myself for not buying the signed copy of Brief Life of Oscar Wao at Barnes and Noble last week. 7y
Brie @vivastory Oh I would have definitely bought that if I hadn‘t already had a copy. I still need to read 7y
vivastory I already owned a copy & I'd settled on signed Saunders,& Whitehead. It was hard to justify a third, but I do love his work. I also still need to read This Is How You Lose Her 7y
Brie @vivastory Still great picks! I don‘t own many signed copies. I‘ll have to look out for some the next time I‘m at B&N 7y

We hurt each other too well to let it drop. She breaks everything I own, yells at me like it might change something, tries to slam doors on my fingers. When she wants me to promise her a love that's never been seen anywhere I think about the other girls. #drown #junotdiaz

Catching up with Junot Diaz backlist this week. I loved 💜💜💜 this collection of stories, but I feel like I got to the party too late with this read. I've read Oscar Wao and This is How You Lose Her. These stories feel like warmup for those books. My own fault for not discovering the brilliant Mr. Diaz sooner! Still it was good to get to know some of these characters again. Must put a reread of Oscar Wao on my reading goals list!😊

He said so many things in two hours and of course I forget them all. However, he did applaud the superheroes which are poor people that put themselves through college. He also said that This Is How You Loose Her has a big secret (something it's avoiding) and if you figure that out- that is what his next book is about. Can anyone say reread 🤔

celtichik Definite reread! 8y
Notafraidofwords @celtichik he basically said that the secret is what he is NOT SAYING in the book. 8y

Notafraidofwords @Kathrin @BookishFeminist he said that he's a slow writer and that his next book is going to be centered around Yunior(most likely). There is something he's avoiding in This is how you loose her which will be explored in this book. 8y

Not a novel and not really a traditional short story collection either-characters appear and reappear so it's more like seeing snapshots of a place taken from different angles. The writing is simply wonderful -warm and vivid and peppered with the street slang of the DR.
