Gravity's Rainbow (Penguin Classics Deluxe)
Gravity's Rainbow (Penguin Classics Deluxe) | Thomas Pynchon
Winner of the 1973 National Book Award, "Gravity's Rainbow" is a postmodern epic, a work as exhaustively significant to the second half of the twentieth century as Joyce's "Ulysses" was to the first. Its sprawling, encyclopedic narrative and penetrating analysis of the impact of technology on society make it an intellectual tour de force. This Penguin Classics deluxe edition features a specially designed cover by Frank Miller along with french claps and deckle-edged paper. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators."

New episode just dropped! As you can tell from the title, we are discussing the much beloved and somewhat feared author, Thomas Pynchon. I use the word feared because Pynchon can be difficult to read and thus, readers are often left wondering, where do I start with one of the most important authors of the last 60 years? Let's find out.

#ThankfulThursday

1. I had hoped to visit friends in Scotland this fall but due to Covid19 will postpone ...maybe next year? We were definitely going to also visit Wigtown, that town with all the bookstores! 😢

2. I‘m grateful for those longtime friends who live in far away states and countries!

3. Since it‘s Saturday 🤪 I won‘t tag anyone specifically, though it is never a bad time express thankfulness! 😁

Thanks for the tag @Sace

Cosmos_Moon_River Scotland sounds amazing 💚 I have old friends that live all over the US and world and would love to visit them all! 5y
Ruthiella @Cosmos_Moon long-standing friendship are the best! ❤️ 5y
Cosmos_Moon_River For sure! I just had a zoom meeting last night with 3 of my best friends and we‘re each in different US time zones. I was on with them from 6:30-midnight central. It was so nice 🥰 5y

Mehso-so

For the past 3 days I have spent every free moment reading this epic novel that has been on my TBR since high school.

Having finished it, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I didn't love it; I didn't hate it. There are sections of it that have some of the most profound writing I have ever read. However, a big chunk of it I felt wasn't needed and just added to my overall confusion.

I can appreciate it though and I'm glad I finally read it.

I picked this book up from my local library in 1996 when I was still in high school. I only read a few chapters then and always told myself I'd get back to it and finish it because those few chapters have stuck with me all these years.

My husband bought it for me last Christmas and I still haven't read it. I think I'll make it my first read in December this year. 😁

#24b42019 will not be completed for me, but my #readathon did result in me FINALLY finishing Gravity's Rainbow!!!

Definitely an amazing work of literature...but I don't know that I could recommend it to people generally. Long, difficult, straight-up disgusting, and very very dense. But what Pynchon has to say, he says very well, and I am glad to have read it.

I'm 100% positive that it is no accident that the premise of the book--Slothrop being the legendary "Rocketman"--occurs with formal introductory fanfare almost exactly halfway through the book.

julesG It's missing an N though. The word should be "Raketenmensch". ? 6y
nudibranch @julesG right?? This edition has an absurd number of typos. 🤦‍♀️ 6y
julesG It could just be a translation mistake, or not knowing German grammar. Unless it's spelled correctly in other cases. 6y
See All 15 Comments
Ruthiella My companion guide by Steve C Weisenburger notes the error in German but also asks why “Mensch” and not “Mann”? 6y
LaLecture Why is this character called acid (Säure) ?? It looks so funny to see German words in the middle of an English text ?. 6y
LaLecture @julesG Do you know the TV show “Grimm”? It‘s based on Grimm‘s fairy tales and all the magical creatures are called by German names but almost every name has a grammar mistake in it, much like this one. So cringy 😅. One wonders if they didn‘t know a single German speaking person to ask for help. Anyway, what I wanted to say by that is that mistake like this are apparently common ^^. 6y
LaLecture @Ruthiella I don‘t know the context in this book but in general there are several instances where “man” or “men” in English would be translated as “Mensch” in German. “Caveman” is “Höhlenmensch“, for example, maybe because “men” is also used in a broader sense in English, referring not only to men but to humans in general. (edited) 6y
julesG @Ruthiella Man can be both, Mensch or Mann. Depending on whether it's related to like mankind - that's Menschheit not Mannheit (the latter sounds real crazy, hinting at potency). 6y
julesG @LaLecture I was also wondering about the Säure character. 6y
julesG @LaLecture Only saw a few episodes of Grimm. Was annoyed by the wrong German. I mean, as you just said, is it really that difficult to find someone to check these tiny German bits? (also my issue with some things in The Book Thief). It can be done well though. Just watched Brannagh's Murder on the Orient Express. The German was accurate, even if the pronunciation had an English accent (especially the character who was supposed to be German). 6y
LaLecture @julesG That‘s another thing that bothers me (not only with German). If you don‘t have any actors who can speak that accent believably, why not hire an actor who is actually a native of that language? 6y
julesG @LaLecture Or give them a pronunciation/diction teacher. Actors learn to pronounce crazy alien languages, like Klingon, why not teach them those few sentences properly? 6y
nudibranch @julesG @LaLecture Säure is a nickname given to a guy who deals opium, who Carrie's a bottle of whiskey in his coat, and pretends its acid that he is willing to use as a weapon if a deal goes bad. 6y
nudibranch *carries. Ugh silly autocorrect. 6y

jmofo Welcome! I love this book but I also had to start it over a few times. It‘s perfectly okay to bail, too, if a book‘s not speaking to you. Are you enjoying it at all? 6y
See All 10 Comments
nudibranch @jmofo thanks! It's a brilliant book, no doubt, and I'm learning a lot about the craft of writing from reading it...so I would say I'm enjoying it. It's just really densely charactered, and occasionally is quite the stomach churner. 6y
jmofo @nudibranch haha yep. He did not make a fluffy read. I sort of picture these kinds of books to be mountains authors felt they had to climb to write and the books, in turn, are mountains for us to climb to read. 6y
jmofo @nudibranch are you interested in the craft of writing as a writer? 6y
nudibranch @jmofo Haha yeah that's a pretty accurate description. And yes, I very much am! I feel like this sums me up pretty perfectly: https://bit.ly/2BHwWX6 6y
Graywacke I worked through it last year, but used a guide and let myself go really slow. I was going to read all his books last year, but eventually decided it was more work than fun. But this one is both - work and fun. Wish you well. 6y
nudibranch @Graywacke thanks for the well wishes! I couldn't imagine trying to slog through pynchon's oeuvre in a single year. Just thinking about it makes me exhausted, haha! 6y
Graywacke @nudibranch it was fun and fascinating. But M&D was just too frustrating with out any normal prose anywhere. So that was where I stopped. 6y

I bailed after 50 pages. I wanted to bail before, but I figured when a person takes the trouble to write a novel of about 900 pages, I should at least give him the chance to change my mind. I didn't.

Happy Holidays! First post in weeks. Epic reading slump. I could blame Gravity's Rainbow, but I'm not going to point any fingers, Mr. Pynchon. I came nowhere near my reading goals for the year, but I did lose 40 pounds, biked and hiked 50 trails with my wife, and finished a new draft of my novel. This is the most fun I've ever had reading Gravity's Rainbow. I have failed multiple times. My system: I read a few chapters, listen to the Pynchon in Public podcast analysis, and then listen to the audiobook as a refresher. It's a book club of one. The novel is dense yet rewarding. Bursting with ideas and so damn funny. It's like falling asleep in a movie theater, dreaming, waking up, watching the movie, dreaming, and then back to reality.

Ericmanciniwriter I've tried and failed to read this ten times but I think you just sold me on try number eleven 7y

I have attempted and failed to read Thomas Pynchon's novel "Gravity's Rainbow" more times than I care to admit. As a silly literary exercise, I am experimenting with a new method to scale this daunting postmodern doorstop-of-Everest-proportions. Audiobook shall be my Sherpa! That is 30+ hours of wacky World War II antics, bizarro cartoon lunacy, psychedelic paranoia on parade, and far out physics. Wish me luck, folks. #bookrainbow #fallintobooks
