Razor Girl
Razor Girl | Carl Hiaasen
The new full-tilt, unstoppably hilarious and entertaining novel from the best-selling author of "Skinny Dip" and"Bad Monkey" When Lane Coolman's car is bashed from behind on the road to the Florida Keys, what appears to be an ordinary accident is anything but (this is Hiaasen!). Behind the wheel of the other car is Merry Mansfield--the eponymous Razor Girl--and the crash scam is only the beginning of events that spiral crazily out of control while unleashing some of the wildest characters Hiaasen has ever set loose on the page. There's Trebeaux, the owner of Sedimental Journeys--a company that steals sand from one beach to restore erosion on another . . . Dominick "Big Noogie" Aeola, a NYC mafia capo with a taste for tropic-wear . . . Buck Nance, a Wisconsin accordionist who has rebranded himself as the star of a redneck reality show called "Bayou Brethren" . . . a street psycho known as Blister who's more Buck Nance than Buck could ever be . . . Brock Richardson, a Miami product-liability lawyer who's getting dangerously--and deformingly--hooked on the very E.D. product he's litigating against . . . and Andrew Yancy--formerly Detective Yancy, busted down to the Key West roach patrol after accosting his then-lover's husband with a Dust Buster. Yancy believes that if he can singlehandedly solve a high-profile murder, he'll get his detective badge back. That the Razor Girl may be the key to Yancy's future will be as surprising as anything else he encounters along the way--including the giant Gambian rats that are livening up his restaurant inspections."

Reviewing this and I‘ve not even finished the book. It‘s the second in the series after Bad Monkey and features the same ex-cop turned “roach inspector”. Starts off just as crazy as the last book. Continues the antics and builds upon the previous book with a new case.

What do a health inspector, a talent agent, a reality tv star, a racist redneck, a shifty lawyer, a male gential enhancement gel, a mafioso, a hit and run expert who shaves her pubes while driving and Gambian pouched rats have in common? Ask Carl Hiaasen... 😂😂😂😂

This was a silly read set in contemporary times. It was fun. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I read it straight through, but I didn‘t. It drug out because I was reading 3 or 4 other books too.

Maybe it‘s an acquired taste? Not sure it is entirely for me. I‘ll read another of his, but this was pretty wacky.

I‘m not sure how I‘m liking this. I am trying to read something from the Florida Keys in prep for our volunteer gig. But this is just too wacky. Has anyone read this?

Samplergal @Cpg I know most of them. Where in soflo? We live in Fort Lauderdale area but are in Fort Myers in our RV until sat. 6y
Cpg @Samplergal sorry I didn‘t see this until now- and I‘m back in Bham, AL. We were in Boca Raton. I did go to a Goodwill Store- but only had a short time to look. I didn‘t get to the books actually. I‘ll be back to visit maybe by the end of July/ before August due date for my next grand due to my other daughter here near me. 6y

Omg what a wild ride! I just love Carl Hiaasen‘s books- they all tend to follow a similar formula: south Florida, corrupt politicians, quirky characters, wacky murders... but I can‘t get enough! Hoping he comes out with a new one soon!

Excuse me while I “Stretch Armstrong” this one:
This book starts out with a bang (like fireworks?) when Lane Coolman‘s car is rearended on his way to Key West. The girl who hit him was a tad distracted as she was busy shaving in preparation for a hot date.... more craziness ensues from there! This opening scene is based on this news story: http://www.nbc-2.com/story/12107993/woman-causes-crash-shaving-bikini-area-while...

#ReadingResolutions

sloanghost This reminds me of a real life true crime story in which the guilty party claimed they kept an 18 inch knife in their car...to chop vegetables while driving 6y
sloanghost I'm sorry "real life true crime story" is the MOST redundant, I am deeply ashamed 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @sloanghost 😂😂😂 usually I only realize my redundancy when I have to go back and mince words bc I‘m over the Litsy limit!!! That‘s hilarious tho- sometimes truth is stranger than fiction! 6y

My least favorite Hiaasen novel. i thought about bailing, but stuck it out because I kept hoping it would get better because I have really enjoyed his other books. Too many plot lines I didn't care about, particularly the lawyer and his girlfriend who wanted to build a mansion on the lot next to Andrew. I found myself skimming those pages towards the end.
