My Life on the Road
My Life on the Road | Gloria Steinem
Gloria Steinem had an itinerant childhood. Every fall, her father would pack the family into the car and they would drive across the country, in search of their next adventure. The seeds were planted: Steinem would spend much of her life on the road, as a journalist, organizer, activist, and speaker. In vivid stories that span an entire career, Steinem writes about her time on the campaign trail, from Bobby Kennedy to Hillary Clinton; her early exposure to social activism in India; organizing ground-up movements in America; the taxi drivers who were "vectors of modern myths" and the airline stewardesses who embraced feminism; and the infinite contrasts, the "surrealism in everyday life" that Steinem encountered as she travelled back and forth across the country. With the unique perspective of one of the greatest feminist icons of the 20th and 21st centuries, here is an inspiring, profound, enlightening memoir of one woman's life-long journey.

I‘ve had this plant for years. It has flowered! The flower is so dainty. I didn‘t realise it could. It gets a water every few months. It thrives on lack of love or maybe it just likes being near my feminist shelf.

This was literally one of my favorite autobiographies I‘ve ever read. She was like you think this is a book about me?? PSYCH!! I‘m using my platform to talk about all the BIPOC women who influenced me and showing you their work. Beautifully done.

absolute killer of a dedication. this book allows us to journey with Gloria as she reveals the extraordinary in ordinary life and her call to action for the freedom of all. she shares her life as a global freedom fighter, inviting readers to continue the journey - and the struggle. a revolutionary woman who helped steer the women‘s movement while acknowledging her privilege as a white woman to take on that role.

“In truth, we don‘t know which of our acts in the present will shape the future. But we have to behave as if everything we do matters. Because it might.” I‘ve had this book on my shelf forever. So happy I finally took the time to read it (we‘ll re-read since I started it years ago). I really loved learning more about Steinem‘s activism & all she‘s accomplished. I was finally able to get bingo for the month #bookspinbingo

On sale on kindle in the US today. I really liked this book when I listened to it, her stories of her travels and the people she‘s meet on the way who influenced her made for a great read.

Prairiegirl_reading I read the dedication in the bookstore and my eyes welled up with tears. I‘ve had this sitting on my shelf, unread ever since. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y
mandarchy I loved this. She never drives, but that all her dad did. And her poor mom. No wonder she became a feminist. Fantastic woman. 4y

I learned a lot from Steinem here through a wide variety of anecdotes of hers and others she listened to in her travels. It is definitely the kind of education that makes you want to scream with anger at the senselessness and selfishness of people and then go do something about it. I was set off-kilter by the lack of chronological order and the overwhelming amount of anecdotes, though. It has certainly inspired me to check out Ms. magazine.

Here‘s hoping we never have LESS people voting in any elections compared with this last one. All elections matter. It IS the least we can do in democracy.

Gloria Steinem learns by talking with people from different races and backgrounds.A feminist spokewoman that understands the relationship between sexism, racism, homophobia and classism and that shows us how to distinguish the instruments of oppression by sharing stories. This book is not only about feminism,is about how we can build a better democracy, one where each person counts, where everyone speaks and listens; a democracy of talking circles.

bthegood Mrs. America, on Netflix I think, really good exploration of the complexity of gender, race, ethnicity, social class, sexual orientation and social justice and equality. 4y
nanuska_153 @bthegood Thanks so much for the recommendation, will definitely check it out 4y
SamAnne @bthegood the Mrs. America episode about Shirley Chisholm made me cry hard. It‘s not a perfect series but it reaches some serious high points in places. 4y
bthegood @SamAnne yes, I appreciated that it made me see the womens movement in a broader perspective, from different view point. 4y

"An older man...says that the Bible forbids abortion in its commandment "Thou shall not kill".But being in the Bible belt, people really know their Bible,an older woman cites Exodus 21:22-23, a passage that says a man who causes a woman to miscarry must pay a fine but is not charged with murder, not unless the woman herself dies. Thus the Bible is making clear that dependant life is not the same as independent life."

Wait a second... a document written by men didn't make sure to explicitly recognise the freedom of choice of women? SHOCKER!

JenniferEgnor The ERA needs to be passed NOW. Also, codify Roe v Wade. I‘m so sick of all this shit. Why do they hate womxn?! And why do some womxn have so much internal misogyny?! 😞😩 4y
nanuska_153 @JenniferEgnor it's all about power, controlling our bodies to control us and feeding the world with the lie that oppression is natural state and that equality and freedom are just ideals; but we've come a long way and we'll go even further 🙌🏼 4y

Might repeat Reese's bookclub,I did it this year to move away from my all classics comfort zone.Anyone has exciting reading plans?

Mehso-so

There are some interesting observations in this collection of memories from a life of travelling to organize, speak, and write. One of my favorites is when a rough looking couple attending a motorcycling convention approaches Steinem and her friend in a diner. They expect trouble, but then the couple tells her how much they appreciate her work. But overall, I just didn't find the storytelling very compelling.

This is an interesting #audiobook with stories from Gloria Steinem‘s childhood, life, and career all the way through age 74. I didn‘t know much about her, so it was especially nice to hear about how her worldview developed over time. #feminism Photo: Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes, photographed by Dan Wynn, 1971.

I'm embarrassed to say this is the first thing I have ever read by Steinem but I'm happy to say I really enjoyed it and I'm sure it won't be the last. So many great stories and lessons! I genuinely feel like I learned a few things from a new "friend." On a side note, someone went to the Flower District this weekend and picked up some flowers. Can you guess who? ?

With three days at the airport last week, you‘d think I‘d get through my reading. Nope, but I did consume the flight attendant section while in the air. Also, I didn‘t realize how much time Steinem spent in my home state of Oklahoma.

I found this memoir totally engrossing.

This a great book and she references another great book, Just Mercy. Everyone in US should read Just Mercy! It should be required homework for every citizen.

JHSiess Just Mercy has been on my TBR pile for a long time. Just haven't gotten in the right frame of mind. I've spent a lot of time in San Quentin -- spoken with condemned guys; seen the housing units, yards, gun rails, & the death chamber. Don't know how I feel about the death penalty. 6y
