The Wife Upstairs
The Wife Upstairs: A Novel | Rachel Hawkins
A delicious twist on a Gothic classic, The Wife Upstairs pairs Southern charm with atmospheric domestic suspense, perfect for fans of B.A. Paris and Megan Miranda. Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estatesa gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name. But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester. Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates most mysterious resident. His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep. Jane cant help but see an opportunity in Eddienot only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection shes always yearned for. Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand. How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddies heart before her pastor hiscatches up to her? With delicious suspense, incisive wit, and a fresh, feminist sensibility, The Wife Upstairs flips the script on a timeless tale of forbidden romance, ill-advised attraction, and a wife who just wont stay buried. In this vivid reimagining of one of literatures most twisted love triangles, which Mrs. Rochester will get her happy ending?

Meh, it was an okay novel but nothing great. I‘ve read other books that feel similar and this one never felt particularly suspenseful or tense. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jane moves to a new town. She meets Eddie, who is handsome, rich, and above all single. As time passes, Jane is intrigued by the legend of 'Bea' Eddie's ex-wife who died in an accident. Turns out, everyone has not so pleasing secrets.
As interesting as the premise is, the book was pretty flat. It felt a bit stretched out too. There wasn't any character development. A classic whodunnit!

Jane meets Eddie after his wife Bea (and her friend Blanche) die in an alleged boating accident. Jane, Eddie and Bea all have pasts they are hiding from others. Jane is the MC, but we also get Eddie and Bea's POVs - past and present. None of the characters are reliable, so there are many twists and the ending left some questions unanswered in a very good way. Overall a very good thriller.

Make a great day everyone 😊

A tentative thumbs up. I don‘t think Brontë would approve. The characters are very different from their models, but some of the story elements align. Once divorced from the source material in my mind, I was able to enjoy this book a lot more.

Oh. Em. Gee. I typically take about five days to read a book but I finished this one in two. It gave Verity vibes. It gave suspense. It gave who the ham can you trust??! LOVED the ending. But can I say… Southern Manors sounds a little tacky?? lol

This Jane Eyre retelling is a little too straightforward for me. The things I love about the characters in the original are lost in a Pretty Woman-like poor-girl revenge story crossed with a modern thriller and populated with regional and class stereotypes. It has given me a lot to think about in regards to what elements go into a good retelling. And it's my #doublespin for October!

I picked this audiobook because I‘m getting married next week (!) and I haven‘t had a ton of brain space recently, so I‘ve been trying to read books that are easier reads. I figured this one would be an easy page turner. It was easy to listen to and finish, so I was right with that, but unfortunately I didn‘t like it. I disliked all the characters and the Jane Eyre motif wasn‘t working for me. Anyone read this and like it?

Pitched as a modern retelling of Jayne Eyre, it was so much more in my opinion. This was a page turner for me, so much more than I ever remember Jayne Eyre being. I was hooked by the evil characters and their dark back stories. Told through 3 POVS it was a well written, riveting and engaging read. I was left thinking WTH had I just read in all the best of ways this was a perfect thriller. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I was not fully expecting that. I mean I knew, but I didn‘t know, but I did know, you know?! Wait, do you want to know too? Then you are in the right place, if you love twists & turns & unexpected secrets to pop up out of nowhere! I loved this book & could not put it down. I was shocked by how quickly things were pieced together & then shattered on the next page. Highly recommend, but beware the skeletons in the… well read & find out!

Really straightforward Jane Eyre retelling for this era.

I have no real problems of it but I wasn‘t surprised by anything. IMO the tension wasn‘t there & the ending came on too quick after all the build up. Mediocre, but a fine palate cleanser.

Book #53
4/5
VERY loosely (from whar I can tell) inspired by Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea, this one has a few surprises which, honestly, would have been more *surprising* if I hadn't read both of the aforementioned books. Still, there were a few things that I had not expected, and I would call it a worthwhile read. 😊

I'm not sure where the days or weeks have gone.
I'm not sure I entirely remember this book ?? ok, so I do remember most of it. It was OK. Good enough for entertaining me on walks and while babe was sleeping. However, no one seems particularly like a "good" person in this story so I really didn't care about any of them and tbh the MC seemed the most grating to me.

I could see what the book was trying to do in terms of moments of suspense/plot twists, however I found it to be lackluster. I recognized those moments when they came up, but felt like they were missing something. I think a lot of the tension was supposed to revolve around the main male character, but as a reader, I felt the character wasn‘t introduced well enough for the suspense/tension to be effective. It needed to be fleshed out more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Excited to finally read this one! I‘ve seen so many good reviews for it since it came out on Book of the Month. Seems like it‘ll follow a pretty basic formula for a thriller, but I think I might need a good reliable “good story formula” to help me relax into a good read as I close off the new year 😌

I'm including a quote from the acknowledgements as a spoiler in the comments because I loved it, but it is a slight spoiler for this book and Jane Eyre.

Book 118

I listened to The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins. A 20-something woman with a checkered past moves to a rich area and becomes the neighborhood dog-walker. Soon she's engaged to a recent widower, whose wife's death is suspicious. The twist, though it seems obvious, is s surprise. An enjoyable listen. 3.5 ⭐️s

It was a fast read and definitely intriguing, but a little rushed at the end. It had a great mystery and a good twist, but felt the epilogue was a bit too much. At times the repetition was annoying instead of leading up to suspense. The revelations were subtle and that was good. I recommend it as a fluff read… not one to really analyze and think about.

Jane dog walks her way into the life of luxury when she comes across the gorgeous widow Eddie, whose wife went missing after a boating accident and is presumed dead. I give this book a pick as it was entertaining but found a few things underwhelming such as why Jane was running away from her past. In all, it‘s an entertaining story with a few twists, although predictable, it‘s still worthy of a read 🙂

SilversReviews I liked this book. 2y

Enjoyable modern retelling of Jane Eyre that kept my attention even though it wasn‘t hard to figure out where the story was going or what the big mystery would reveal. All of the characters were unreliable and I liked that it changed between 3 different POVs, even while the main narrator was Jane. Very entertaining! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
