Blood on Snow: A Novel | Jo Nesb๘
50 posts | 77 read | 15 to read
"From the internationally acclaimed author of the Harry Hole novels--a new, electrifying stand-alone thriller set in Oslo in the 1970s: the story of an unusually complicated contract killer--the perfectly sympathetic antihero--that is, as well, an edgy, almost lyrical meditation on death and love. This is the story of Olav: an extremely talented "fixer" whose unexpected capacity for love is as far-reaching as his talent for murder. He works for Oslo's crime kingpin, "fixing" anyone who causes him trouble. But it's becoming clear to Olav that the more you know about your boss's business, the more your boss might want you fixed yourself, especially if you've fallen in love with his wife ..."--

Very nice and interesting read.
The ending is a bit harsh but very relatable to real life.

I have liked other Jo Nesbo books but couldn't get into this one. A hit man is hired by his boss to kill the boss's cheating wife and instead decides to try and save her because she is pretty and he wants to have sex with her, I guess. I found the main character unrelatable. Someone who makes such stupid choices would not have survived so long as a hit man.

This was soo much better than the first one! Though I did like the first one as well. Somehow I really enjoyed the writing, characters and the surroundings on this one. This was short and easy to read. Perfect read for these Covid days. ๐Ÿค’๐Ÿ˜ท

Jo Nesbo‘s standalone crime noir novella (translated from Norwegian by Neil Smith) is a tightly written story with some inky black humour and although it is a little predictable, it‘s fast-paced and at times oddly moving. For some reason, I have not gotten around to reading much of his work, but this novella has shown me I need to correct that.

Not for the faint hearted! Very grim, slow and brooding but the tension is palpable. Unlike Case Histories where the humor fell flat, here I found the dark humor quite entertaining. I‘m just confused why a book told entirely from a male POV would be read by a woman?? Mind you, the woman is PATTI SMITH๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป but still a little odd. A quick read at under 5 hours๐Ÿ˜‰ Audiobooks have really been my bff this weekโค๏ธ๐ŸŽง #BorrowNotBuy

Librarybelle I‘m not sure if I have the stomach to read Nesbo‘s books. I‘ve heard they are not for the faint of heart, and I‘m totally #TeamSqueamish . 5y
Megabooks Agree with @Librarybelle ...also re: narrator was there a directorial reason? Like it‘s not really clear why Fleishman is in trouble is narrated by a woman, but by part three, it makes sense. 5y

alisiakae His books are on the gory and heavy side, but I love the Harry Hole series (haven‘t read the his stand alones like this one). I‘ll be reading this for Norway 5y
Cinfhen It wasn‘t terribly brutal @Librarybelle @Megabooks @4thhouseontheleft but #TeamSqueamish should probably stay away ๐Ÿ˜…No, I can‘t understand why Patti Smith was the narrator although she does have a husky raspy voice which was smooth & sultry. This was almost So-So but just short because of the ending. While I like mystery and the concept of the "hitman with a heart" plot of this gritty, dark, pulp fiction #nordicnoir I was not a fan of any of the characters. The main protagonist had a lot of issues and was not believable as a good person. A couple of the twists surprised me but the writing felt a little underfilled and the ending left me unsatisfied. #pop18 #popsugarreadingchallenge

Dunno what made me mistake Nesbรธ to be a Swedish writer... Anyways glad to have completed

Fast-paced and eloquently written.
The expected violence and (somewhat) grisly details have kept me away from the popular Harry Hole series... Someday ;p

My first Jo Nesbo and I am honestly a little underwhelmed. Patti Smith‘s voice was perfect but the story itself wasn‘t that special for me... Is there another title I should try to get the full Jo Nesbo effect? #audiobook #newtomeauthor

emilyhaldi I know the right person for you to ask.... @Reggie !!!! 7y
Reggie Hey, thanks @emilyhaldi. This is the 7th book in the series. The first book is entertaining bad like Showgirls was supposed to be this deep movie but the acting is so bad you can‘t help but laugh and be entertained. Anyways, skip to the 3rd book, The Redbreast. It‘s where Nesbo really hits his stride. The 1st 2 books take place out of Norway so it‘s a bit disorienting and your not missing much in way of backstory. Funny story I only read this 7y
Reggie Series so I could watch the movie..... and then didn‘t watch the movie. Lolol also, you‘ll find Jo can be a bit of a sexist. 7y
BooksAtNight @Reggie Wow, thank you so much for sharing all that with me! Definitely good to know going into his books. I‘ll give him another chance... in a few month ๐Ÿ˜‚ 7y

This was my first Jo Nesbo book. A story of a hit man in Oslo who has a soft side. Not that it prevented some violent incidents which were quite disturbing. Yet, here I was hoping for Olav to win and survive. Oh, and Patti Smith did a fantastic job as the narrator! #nuyear #iassasin #blameitonlitsy
