#BorrowNotBuy

Decently funny satire about hyper-competitive NYC private kindergarten admissions. #borrownotbuy if you‘re looking for some moms behaving badly.

Sam is a precocious oldest of three from a rich family on the Upper East Side. His mom will do anything (short of homeschooling) to ensure he gets the best education, even if it means brawling with another mom!

Megabooks Whoops! Forgot to put this in as a review not blurb! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 3.25⭐️ (low pick) on the storygraph FWIW. 2mo

Sorry I‘ve been gone y‘all! Too many books to catch up on, but I had to share this one. Started slow. Great middle. I violently hated, just hated the last 10%!! 😡😡

Two friends have lived together since college. In their 30s, one gets pregnant from a one night stand. When baby daddy returns to Hawaii, their world changes dramatically.

BarbaraBB Happy to see you ❤️❤️. Your review is strangely tempting 😀 3mo
squirrelbrain Ooh intrigued as to what was so terrible about the last 10%! 🤪 3mo

Megabooks @squirrelbrain My lips are zipped. It not as straightforward a book as it initially appeared, so I'm not sure if revealing would make sense without knowing the character arcs! 3mo
Megabooks @barbarabb @squirrelbrain I'm sorry I haven't returned your emails. I've been struggling not only with it being the hottest time of the year and flaring my MCAS but also with migraines from hormones/menopause. I have barely been able to look at screens this week. Hopefully I'll be able to reply later this weekend or next week. However, I have to look away from this screen now! 💜 💜 💜 3mo
squirrelbrain Look forward to hearing from you whenever you can! 3mo

#booker #longlist 7/13

I liked this, but didn‘t love it.

I liked it for its unusual concept and style - following 8 girl boxers as they compete in Reno.

I didn‘t love it because there wasn‘t enough depth to make me care about the characters, and they all seemed to blend into one. It started well, but got rather repetitive as it went on.

I don‘t think it will make my personal shortlist but I think the judges might like it.

JenP Agreed. That‘s pretty much what I said in my review. I think it will make the shortlist but I‘ve only read half the books so far 4mo
AnneCecilie Interesting. I‘ve seen some great reviews for this one, but from your review I‘m not sure I will like it. I like when I get to know the characters and this doesn‘t seem like that kind of book then (edited) 4mo
squirrelbrain @AnneCecilie - there are some deep subjects but they‘re covered in a rather superficial way. It probably would have been better to have 4 characters covered in more depth, rather than skimming over 8 teenage girls. (edited) 4mo

squirrelbrain I‘m glad we‘re in agreement @JenP 😄 I‘m not sorry that I read it but it won‘t stay with me. 4mo
AnneCecilie Then I don‘t think I‘ll rush out to spend my own money on it, but wait and see if it becomes available through my library (edited) 4mo
squirrelbrain Yes, it feels like a #borrownotbuy @AnneCecilie - I found it on Everand and I‘d have been disappointed if I‘d have bought it. 4mo
JamieArc This sounds similar to other reviews I‘ve seen. I have this next up after My Friends. 4mo
BarbaraBB The concept sounds good indeed but I trust your opinion 4mo
Graywacke Interesting. All the responses i‘ve seen have been positive. Readers who are sort of surprised how much they liked it. Congrats on #7 3mo

Batya spoken to many working class Americans in many fields and many parts of the country about their life, needs, and political views. I loved hearing from these people verbatim and learning about how multifaceted the group is compared to listening to polarizing media. However, when she went into synthesizing points around these findings, she lost me a bit. A definite #borrownotbuy but still interesting!

This was just a fun romp through millennial nostalgia. As a young GenX I don‘t have the exact same cultural reference points (I was in my early 20s when the author was a teenager), but Kennedy kept things fun and funny including silly poems and asides. A good #borrownotbuy!

britt_brooke As an Elder Millennial, I had some overlap, but I‘m older than her, too. Very fun, though! 4mo
Chelsea.Poole We‘re so in sync! I am almost halfway through this one. Pretty relatable for me so far; the author was born the same year I was. 3mo

I enjoyed this, but it was a bit disjointed and more a #borrownotbuy.

Bond looks into the psychology behind fans. He speaks to fans, a few artists, and some experts. He examines separating art from artist with Michael Jackson fans. He delves deep into Janeites and a group I‘ve never heard of called therians, who believe they are animals. (I don‘t see how the latter is a fandom. 🤷🏻‍♀️) He ends with people who are fans of killers. 😬😬

While I liked Chung‘s second short story collection translated to English, I didn‘t like it as much as Cursed Bunny. It‘s interesting speculative horror often involving AI/sentient machines. My favorite story was about an elevator obsessed with an elderly woman with Parkinson‘s. Also the title story about a car and robot on a deserted planet was surprisingly touching. Overall, I‘d say #BorrowNotBuy on this one.

Kerrbearlib Great photo! Love the #BorrowNotBuy tag! 7mo
Megabooks @Kerrbearlib thanks!! I wish I could take credit for the hashtag, but a friend who doesn‘t post anymore invented it! 7mo
squirrelbrain Sounds a bit weird for me. 😬 7mo
