Beach Read
Beach Read: the ONLY laugh-out-loud love story youll want to read on holiday | Emily Henry
He doesn't believe in happy endings. She's lost her faith that they exist. But could they find one together? January is a hopeless romantic who likes narrating her life as if she's the heroine in a blockbuster movie. Augustus is a serious literary type who thinks true love is a fairy-tale. January and Augustus are not going to get on. But they actually have more in common than you'd think: They're both broke. They've got crippling writer's block. They need to write bestsellers before the end of the summer. The result? A bet to see who can get their book published first. The catch? They have to swap genres. The risk? In telling each other's stories, their worlds might be changed entirely... Set over one sizzling summer, Beach Read is a witty, feel-good love story for fans of The Flat Share and Our Stop. ______________________________ WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING 'A touching and heartfelt book...I adored going along on Gus and January's journey, and I closed this book with a satisfied sigh' Jasmine Guillory, author of The Proposal 'Original, sparkling bright and layered with feeling...If whipcrack banter and foggy sexual tension is your catnip, you'll adore this book' Sally Thorne, author of The Hating Game 'The witty, charming and swoony novel we always want...I adored it' Julia Whelan, author of My Oxford Year 'Has everything the title promises - a romping plot, family secrets, and the thrill of falling in love...I cannot wait to read what Henry writes next' Amy E. Reichert, author of The Optimist's Guide to Letting Go

Sweet romance. Would be a perfectly good “beach read”. Didn‘t sweep me away…

I‘m really enjoying Emily Henry books for “clearing the palate” so to speak. They are light enjoyable books. The characters are developed fully. They have flaws and problems that they‘re overcoming in addition to the love story. I liked Book Lovers better but over all I enjoyed reading this book. It‘s a perfect summer time read. All of her books are. I heard that many of her books will be made into movies. I think they‘ll transition to film well!

I didn't like this as much as Happy Place, but that's a pretty high bar, so this is still pretty far up the list of books I've enjoyed in my life. I'm not a critical, so I'm not going to list why I did or didn't like elements of this over other books. It's quite literally a good "Beach Read" if that's what you're looking for, exactly as advertised. #43-2024

A very low pick. Two Emily Henry books in a row may have been too much but I just found this too predictable and the characters dull. January seemed the least intelligent heroine to date and there was little suspense or real tension. I definitely need to move on.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I liked most of this well enough but the last couple of chapters had me rolling my eyes so hard. These were mostly likeable characters that just seemed so immature and dopey (particularly January) toward the end. Why have an actual conversation about this emotional issue that‘s bugging you when you could assume the worst and end up in unnecessary turmoil?? It was a soft pick but the last couple of chapters took it to a so-so.

Third time reading, and I still love it! My friend & I are reading a Henry book a month over the summer for our mini-book club! It‘ll be her first time reading most of them and my second or third (or 5th for Book Lovers 😅).
This isn‘t my favorite Emily Henry, but I love all her stuff so much, that that‘s not really saying much.
Julia Whelan is, as ever, an excellent narrator.

Not my cup of tea.
Light read, very predictable (in the first few pages, you know exactly what will happen)
Quite a lot of repetitive parts...
It's a cliché story, Hallmark like.

Another fun read! I didn‘t go into this one with high expectations as wasn‘t a huge fan of People We Meet on Vacation, but this one is exponentially better! The characters are much more complex and loved their development and tension. Also, fun to finish on a cold, snowy, April day.

wanderinglynn I agree. I liked this one way more than People for the same reason. 8mo

Started out great. Yet the pace was all over, and it was just missing *something*. I'm not wasting time wading through treacle. If I'm not enjoying a book anymore, I'm bailing!

Loved this one!!! Gus and January both fresh out of a different type of heart break meet again. The typical lines of healing, heartbreak, family baggage, and individual restoration. Let‘s face it…I‘ll take Emily Henry‘s story of two author‘s stuck in despair turned lovers any day. 💗

KadaGul @JessieKB I have read most of Emily Henry's books, and while they are good, her debut novel stands out as her best work. 9mo

I liked this more than most new age adult romances but it also didn‘t amaze me. I will say that I don‘t think i have it a fair shot because I read it during the school year which means that it took me forever and it was distinctly not summer vibes when I read it. Maybe I‘ll read it again during the summer so I can fully enjoy it

I enjoyed this one almost as much as “Book Lovers.” Plenty of the usual playful banter which is fast becoming a Emily Henry trademark. Some insightful thoughts on writing and what motivates authors, but felt the family relationships could have been developed a little more. Overall, a funny romance and great summer read! ☀️

Just started this. I'm not a huge romance fan, but I did enjoy Book Lovers, so I have hopes for this one. We're having a book discussion of it at the end of the month.

CrowCAH I‘m reading this too AND having a book discussion at the end of the month! Are you a #MittenLitten, part of GDRW Greater Detroit Romance Writer‘s? Your name doesn‘t ring a bell as one of our members. 1y

Reading the tagged book for GDRW book club this month. Where we‘ll actually be discussing it at a local Michigan beach! I‘ve come across lots of funny and good lines that make me smile 😊

As a lover of Pirates of the Caribbean 🏴‍☠️I know I‘d be thrilled to see a SIXTH POTC film!!! ❤️

peaKnit Oh gosh, me too! Love all things Disney but Jack Sparrow is one of a kind! 1y
CrowCAH @peaknit he‘s “honestly” arrr-mazing!!! 🏴‍☠️ (I‘m still rooting for a sixth installment or a Disney+ tv show in the world of POTC) 1y
peaKnit Lol, yes he is! We watched them all again one year as “prep” for a Disney World trip. (And talk like a pirate day!) We just rewatched all of the Indians Jones for the next movie and maybe, I hope, a Disneyland vacation🥳 1y
CrowCAH @peaknit aye, September 19th is for sure a holiday at this house! A good excuse to rewatch any franchise! I hope you get to go to Disneyland! 1y

SarahH2 Hi! New here - what does roll100 mean? 1y
DinoMom @SarahH2 it is hosted my @puddlejumper. You can participate in different ways . The premise is you either assign numbers to books you already have or maybe make a list books you want to read. At the beginning of each month she rolls 3 different numbers and you read the books that you assigned those numbers to. It‘s a great way to clean up your TBR list and take the hard decisions out of what to read next :) it‘s fun! 1y

I didn‘t enjoy this as much as People We Meet on Vacation. I was given this book by another vacationer while we were in St. Thomas.
I saw another review that praised how accurately Henry described life in Michigan and Up North summers. I‘m not familiar with either. Does anyone else agree/disagree with that?

gossamerchild I grew up in West Michigan, not far at all from many of the towns she was talking about :-) (I think it's a combination of several West Michigan beach towns). So yeah, it seemed really accurate from my experience. I LOVED this book, mostly because of the homesickness I got from it :-) 2y

Another Emily Henry book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

This one is about two writers - a romance writer and a literary fiction writer.

They make a bet to write in the other's genre and see who sells their book first.

Of course, they fall in love ❤️

A little more over the place than I generally enjoy. Two traumatized adults who coped in different ways find eventual comfort in each other. He felt all is wrong with the world, she looks for light. Did like most of their personalities. Didn‘t get the whole bad vibe she gave him. Didn‘t stand up well. While they learned to talk it out, I didn‘t get the feel that brought them together. Too much a loose end for me. Still was an enjoyable read.

I love when books actually get Michigan right. Of course I love January and Gus and their banter and their chemistry, but on this #reread, I was really struck by how well Henry captured an Up North summer. And we stan a passionate defense of romance novels! #contemporaryromance #romcom

Beach Read by Emily Henry.
I enjoyed it overall. The writing process bits were very interesting. The love story was nice, I appreciated the smooth ending. It was not without cliches, expected from the genre, but in the end I didn‘t mind them too much. The mature content was not vulgar, which was a relief . (I can‘t say about two other romances I read this year.) I would likely read it again.
