Pygmalion
Pygmalion | George Bernard Shaw
A rousing success on the London and New York stages, a popular film, and a great musical hit (My Fair Lady), this brilliantly written play, with its irresistible theme of the emerging butterfly, is one of the most acclaimed comedies in the English language.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this play. The audio book is very well read, or rather - played. Especially Lucy Whybrow as Eliza is unforgettable. Often I found myself getting enraged because of the way Eliza is treated, but I started rooting for her more and more.

I don‘t have much to say about this. A retelling of the myth, it‘s a very unusual premise for a play, but I‘m so glad it ends differently than the musical. The afterword by Shaw is helpful to read, but his analysis of the characters has a pop-psychology style which is bizarre. The only reason I‘m not panning this is because Eliza sticks up for herself at the end. I‘m rewatching the musical for a class so the comparison will be interesting.

rubyslippersreads I ❤️ My Fair Lady, and I believe they changed the ending somewhat for the Broadway revival. 2y

I only read this play for #Booked2021 and was more amused by it than expected. I didn‘t even know My Fair Lady is based on Shaw‘s novella. And now I realize that the book isn‘t #PoetryOrWrittenInVerse but I hope a play will do too!

Cinfhen A play will do ☺️😉xxxx 3y

One of my favorite reads assigned in high school!! 🌻

It‘s gaining a whole new meaning now that I‘m learning about the book‘s namesake: Pygmalion from Greek myth — the one who fell in love with his creation. Gives it a whole Narcissus/Dorian Gray vibe too.

This isn‘t really book related. I went to see My Fair Lady last night. (Fathom Events) Somehow, I have lived 49 years and never seen it. Most of it, I loved. The music was delightful, and Audrey Hepburn was beautiful. However...the ending killed me! Professor Higgins was such an ass! He was so mean to Eliza - and she CAME BACK TO HIM! NO APOLOGY! I was so disappointed! Ugh...maybe it‘s me

Amandajoy I love that movie, but the ending does bug me. I think that‘s just a product of its day & can‘t be looked at with modern lenses. We can have issues with it & still enjoy it. 6y
esurient I heartily agree with your comments. I first saw the film as a teen, and then read the original Pigmalion playscript and boggled at the differences between them. Teen!me was outright confounded at how Shaw did not romantically match the lead characters; it hadn't dawned on me that was even an option. It makes me wonder how current or future sensibilities would tweak a remake. 6y
Melkyl @esurient I absolutely need to read the play script and see what I think. I know we can‘t always judge at older pieces with modern sensibilities, but the actions of the characters really bothered me. 6y

I feel like someone like John Green would be somewhat horrified by Bernard Shaw‘s ending “chapter” that tells everything that happens after the story ends. It‘s interesting that he felt the need to take that kind of ownership and explain why the reader was almost certainly interpreting the characters wrong.

It was a delightful read though.

Day 7 of #12DaysOfChristmas we have swans which have a temper but to me, seem very graceful when swimming. I chose Eliza Doolittle who was ever graceful after her lessons. The play and movie go further to show that she still has that angry flower girl under the grace though. 😂

Pygmalion is not a romance. Rather, it is a snarky, witty examination of "middle class morality", the ethics of playing with a person's life and feelings; also, that of transformation, gaining self-respect, and strength of character. Shaw also examines the skewed morality of class and the station of women.

Eliza is too smart to marry Higgins - she would never live a life fetching slippers. Take that, My Fair Lady.

Gezemice @Liatrek @Simona I listened on audio first but realized I was missing context, so I read it, too. Shaw adds an entire epilogue after the play to explain what happens after... which tells you how wrong My Fair Lady was about the whole meaning of the play. I highly recommend reading it! 7y
