How to Read and Why
How to Read and Why | Harold Bloom
16 posts | 7 read | 14 to read
At a time when faster and easier electronic media threaten to eclipse reading and literature, the author explores reasons for reading and demonstrates the aesthetic pleasure reading can bring.

Today's library books, along with tagged book I picked up, Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin, The Island of Lost Maps by Miles Harvey, The Tangled Tree by David Quammen. I just browsed and grabbed :)

Laura317 I loved Winter‘s Tale! I think I might have to re-read it again. (edited) 5y

Hey all, the awesome @Soubhiville is bringing back #authoramonth. It‘s a type of free for all book club. An author is chosen and then you read what ever book by that author you want. At the end of the month we talk about what we read.

Since this is kind of my fault I want to all to head over to her original post and vote for some authors. I take full credit on misspelled authors because I didn‘t pay attention to autocorrect when I suggested them

Soubhiville Lol, hopefully most folks will know who you meant? Anyway, there are a ton of great authors to choose from! 6y

Day3 of #riotgrams : #howyouread I picked a sampling of snaps to show some favorite ways I read...enjoying the outdoor sunshine in my new backyard, snuggled up on the couch or in bed, and relaxing at the beach! Notice that kitties and cups of tea are often a feature when I'm reading. 😻📚

@bookriot #howyouread part two! As well as the #Kindle app, I have a #Kindle which means I can read two different books on them. I also enjoy physical copies & I'm posting one of my current reads on the right for this reason. #riotgrams

Joanne1 I too have a kindle plus kindle app plus physical books and audio books. I'll take stories anyway I can get them! 8y

jenniferw88 @Birdsong28 good idea! I like things being alphabetical so that probably wouldn't work for me! 🤣 8y

#readjanuary #bookishresolutions

I almost resolved to put a dent in my current tbr before buying more books, but that would just be a flat out lie. My big thing is bailing on books that just aren't worth my time, which I find difficult. I just need to remember the sunk cost fallacy and invest my precious time in books that are worth it.
@RealLifeReading

LauraJ Excellent resolutions! 8y
Lola Bailing can be beautiful! Don't fear the bail! 😁 8y
vivastory Haha, most honest opening sentence for a resolution. I tend to not bail either. In fact, I can't remember the last time I bailed on a book. 8y

minkyb Oh #3 is a smart one. I will be curious how you do with it. Hoping to be inspired to be able to do it. 8y
respekt1111 @LauraJ Thanks! 8y
cathysaid Seems we all have those "bail" and "don't bail" devils/angels on our shoulders ?? 8y
respekt1111 @vivastory @minkyb I'm trying to implement the rule that if I'm miserable, or I make up excuses to do anything but read the book, I should probably put it down. Life's too short! 8y
respekt1111 @cathysaid 😁 perfect description!👍 8y
minkyb Good description @cathysaid 8y
Liatrek I will try to embrace the bail :-) I rarely do it. 8y

Working here makes me happy: one colleague brought me tea, another one shared his freshly baked Christmas cookies with us and I get to read. Who wouldn't call that the best job ever? I know I'm lucky. 😊 And look at that colourful cookie - it's like the unicorn of cookies and it actually glitters!

Donna_sBookMinute I just handled this book a couple of hours ago while straightening shelves. I think I started it years ago. 8y
I-read-and-eat I would love a work place like that. Though mine isn't bad either, just no time to read 😉 8y
RinaBrahmbhattBarot I'm curious - what's your job? I love to get a job in literacy field. Not sure where to start...planning to start my own podcast for book review (kind of making it happen for me attitude) 8y

scripturient @MyBookSwapClub I'm a lecturer of British lit at university. I love it and was really lucky as getting a permanent position in this is very difficult in Germany. One thing just turned into another: I worked as a student assistant in the department, was offered to do my PhD, stayed on and after quite a few years eventually got 'tenure'. Maybe you could do an internship with a publisher or something. See how you like it and where it takes you. :) (edited) 8y
Heideschrampf Unicorn cookies!! Oh i miss the essen campus... 8y
Heideschrampf @MyBookSwapClub yes! I'm pretty sure you'll find a lot of support here at litsy! I'll be looking forward to your first episode :) 8y
scripturient @Heideschrampf Simple solution to that: come back!!!! 😊 8y
