A fun read, if a bit long. Be warned, if you are picking this up for the Downton Abbey comp, it‘s almost entirely downstairs with very little upstairs. But it had an interesting resolution and I really enjoyed Louisa and Guy.

This first in a series introduces Louisa Cannon, a former criminal who works for the Mitford family. Most of the children are younger here, with Nancy being the oldest at 18. The story, about the real-life killing of Florence Nightingale Shore, is fine but the book is too long. After the resolution of the murder, there is still over an hour left in the audiobook. Low pick. #audiowalk

Expecting cozy Downton-ish mystery. From the get go I had issues. Rambled with many viewpoints. Couldn't figure out who the protagonist was supposed to be. Almost most Bailed. Found out was actually based on real life people.
I know nothing of the actual Nancy Mitford. Book version is a self centered whiner. That's the problem I have with Historical Fiction based on Real Life people. What's true and what's not?

Crinoline_Laphroaig BIGGEST PROBLEM - author took a Real Life Person; who was never accused or even a suspect and made them the murderer. There's something so wrong with that.

Doubt I will read any more of this series. If I do, it would definitely be Borrow don't Buy.
5y
CarolynM I also thought this was terrible. I'm sure it only got published because of the author's connections. 5y

mrsmarch @ashley_o13 My 6 year old took the Pottermore sorting hat quiz and it put her in Ravenclaw, which makes sense if you think of her as a Luna Lovegood type Ravenclaw 🦅 💙🧡. I don‘t know where the baby will sort to, but I am beginning to suspect Slytherin. ðŸ 💚🖤 5y
ashley_o13 @mrsmarch that's so cute she looks like a ravenclaw lol and I'm guessing the little one has a little evil side ? And I thought my 9 year old was too young to do the Pottermore sorting hat quiz I'm going to have him take it! 5y
mrsmarch @ashley_o13 I walked River through the quiz when she was 4 because I couldn‘t wait another second. And her patronus was specifically a stray cat, which again, if you knew her IRL, is totally accurate. Cleo is adorably evil, but she has the classic Slytherin strive-for-greatness drive. If she isn‘t Slytherin, she‘s a Gryffindor, because she‘s 💯 a long-lost Weasley. 5y
ashley_o13 @mrsmarch aw! That's so cute! I'm definitely having Brayden do it tomorrow! I feel like he could definitely be Slytherin or Ravenclaw his personality is so in between them. When he takes it I'll let you know what he gets ! 5y

Set in the 1920s, this is the first in the Mitford sisters mystery series. I‘ve yet to read this one, but Downton Abbey fans will note the name Fellowes and it‘s connection to the series (the creator‘s daughter). The 1920s puts me in the #SwingTheMood ...a time of flappers and the beginning of laissez faire thoughts and dreams.

âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸. A fabulous historical mystery set in the early 1920s with the Mitford sisters as a center point. I had never heard of the Mitfords before this but they seem fascinating! The mystery angle was fantastic and I didn‘t see the end coming at all. Fellowes did a wonderful job weaving fact and fiction together and I can‘t wait to read the second book in the series!

I find the Mitford sisters fascinating so the title of this historical fiction drew my interest. It was a great book to read while traveling. It is based on a real life case. I liked Louisa, the nursery maid turned amateur detective and the case kept me guessing. I had a small issue with the ending but I won't say what so as not to spoil it. I'm happy to see it is a series and look forward to book 2.

rretzler I didn‘t realize this was actually based on the real Mitfords! 6y
MallenNC @rretzler Only loosely. They're children in this one, Nancy is the only one with much of a part in it, but that may change in the other books. 6y

After 2 bails earlier today, I completed my third book of 2019 and started my 4th. I was planning on using this for #booked2019 #femaleDetective but 16yr old Nancy Mitford really doesn‘t qualify as a detective. However book works fine for #pop19 #amateurdetective🕵ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸I‘d call this a British cozy with traces of Miss Marple & Maisie Dobbs. It was a perfectly fine mystery with some nice twists & interesting historical content. (1920s England)

#MondayMystery #ReadingResolutions
The Mitford Murders is fun, engrossing,& full of intrigue & murder. Set in 1920 England, the novel contrasts the lives of the Mitford‘s impoverished nursemaid Louise Cannon, and the upper class 16 year old Nancy Mitford. A War nurse is murdered on a train & both girls get caught up in solving the case. Issues deriving from poverty such as child exploitation(used for pickpocketing, sex) & class are explored.

I'm actually quite annoyed that this book was published. Pedestrian writing, completely lacking in wit, unbelievable "mystery" with far too many convenient connections and unconvincing motivations. I'm sure the Mitford connection was only used as a selling point, the characters bore little relationship to the documented Mitford personalities other than occasional well known idiosyncrasies of speech shoe-horned in every now and then. Ugh!!!???

This book was fascinating because it wove fact with fiction. I had no idea that it was based on a true story. I'm a fan of British Historical Mysteries so, I enjoyed the mystery then reading the author notes I learned that there was a notorious Florence Nightingale Shore murder. It's had several plots going, so it kept the storyline moving along for me. This is the first book of a series. I look forward to next book!
