A fun read, if a bit long. Be warned, if you are picking this up for the Downton Abbey comp, it‘s almost entirely downstairs with very little upstairs. But it had an interesting resolution and I really enjoyed Louisa and Guy.
Roll 79 for #Roll100
Okay mystery but nothing to write home about. I see book two got better reviews. Perhaps I'll try that one before giving up on the series.
This first in a series introduces Louisa Cannon, a former criminal who works for the Mitford family. Most of the children are younger here, with Nancy being the oldest at 18. The story, about the real-life killing of Florence Nightingale Shore, is fine but the book is too long. After the resolution of the murder, there is still over an hour left in the audiobook. Low pick. #audiowalk
A fun cozy mystery! Louisa, a young governess for the Mitford family, teams up with a local detective to solve the murder of a young woman on a train. Love the Mitfords, love murder mysteries, honestly wins all around.
Yay Jólabókaflód!!! Thank you @Julsmarshall for this wonderful #jolabokaflodswap package with three books that I‘m very much looking forward to reading!! And the chocolate looks delish! ♥ï¸?♥ï¸?â™¥ï¸ Merry Christmas!
And thanks again to @MaleficentBookDragon for keeping my favorite swap alive! ?♥
Finished Mitford Murders for both #bookspin and #doublespin November! Pausing Wake, Siren to read The Indigo Girl for #LMPBC Southern Literature. Then back to knocking off my TBR!
This was an interesting read. Very in line with Agatha Christie. I liked the little hints that Hark to other writers, like the lawyers address on Baker Street and the man in the brown suit. A fun mystery that I enjoyed reading. I liked all the twists. 4*
I think this book could‘ve been about 100 pages shorter and it would‘ve helped. By the end I was thinking, “Ugh! Just wrap it up!†A solid “Mehâ€.
Pace was slow and lots of unnecessary little details. It‘s interesting how it‘s based on an actual murder case though.
#bookspin list for June
I also have #readyoursign lined up for June, and hope to complete 4 books. One bookspin book will mean 5 books, which is a lot for a mom of 2 in this crisis!
A nice who-dunnit book. Don‘t know why it had to be centered around the Mitford sisters (other than marketing).
Expecting cozy Downton-ish mystery. From the get go I had issues. Rambled with many viewpoints. Couldn't figure out who the protagonist was supposed to be. Almost most Bailed. Found out was actually based on real life people.
I know nothing of the actual Nancy Mitford. Book version is a self centered whiner. That's the problem I have with Historical Fiction based on Real Life people. What's true and what's not?
I so enjoyed this first instalment in the series! Loved the inclusion of the real-life Mitford family and the murder mystery was intriguing. Actually, there was more than one mystery, but you‘ll have to read it for yourself to find out more. 😉I highly recommend the audio version. 5/5âï¸
Just started reading this book 😊 it seems to be my kind of genre ... let‘s see ðŸ˜
#day4 #7days7covers Post a cover you love each day for 7 days. No explanation needed
#BlackAndYellow #Hello! Thank you so much Ashley!! I don‘t know who was more excited to finally open the box — me or my two year old 🥰. I can‘t wait to celebrate #FallAtHogwarts — hopefully there‘s no murders on the Hogwarts Express this year, like the train murder in The Mitford Murders. I wonder what new students will join us at the #Hufflepuff table? #fallathogwartsswap #FAHS
Set in the 1920s, this is the first in the Mitford sisters mystery series. I‘ve yet to read this one, but Downton Abbey fans will note the name Fellowes and it‘s connection to the series (the creator‘s daughter). The 1920s puts me in the #SwingTheMood ...a time of flappers and the beginning of laissez faire thoughts and dreams.
Thank you to @squirrelbrain and @Cinfhen for a fun #ayupaugust month!
The tagged book is what I read on my last #train trip from Truro to Windsor in the UK this spring. This was our little room on the night train. I am hoping to take the train from NC to Maryland next month to get more reading done! #LetsTravelJuly
âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸. A fabulous historical mystery set in the early 1920s with the Mitford sisters as a center point. I had never heard of the Mitfords before this but they seem fascinating! The mystery angle was fantastic and I didn‘t see the end coming at all. Fellowes did a wonderful job weaving fact and fiction together and I can‘t wait to read the second book in the series!
I bought this book for the cover. So far so good!
I find the Mitford sisters fascinating so the title of this historical fiction drew my interest. It was a great book to read while traveling. It is based on a real life case. I liked Louisa, the nursery maid turned amateur detective and the case kept me guessing. I had a small issue with the ending but I won't say what so as not to spoil it. I'm happy to see it is a series and look forward to book 2.
I spent about 5 hours on a train to Windsor today but that meant I got to read! I‘m 3/4ths through this one. I like it.
Do you ever randomly pick a book at the store, actually start reading it first (instead of throwing it in the TBR pile lol), then out out of curiosity look it up on Litsy?... and then go Damn.... I‘m trying to ignore the percentage and just go with the flow of the story. But I‘m seeing what other readers were complaining about. #easilyinfluenced
The book's annotation spoke of the infamous #Mitford sisters. I was intrigued! But... It was a classic English detective with a well-built story and interesting characters! I don't quite understand why the annotation mentioned the Mitford sisters' scandals?! 😕 In the book, all the sisters are children except the eldest Nancy! Perhaps to be continued?
Heyy you'll....picked this book last summer at dymocks when I was spending some time in Australia. I decided a few days back that it was time for the book to stop eating dust and I should start reading it....it's been a wonderful book so far. Try to get Ur hands on this masterpiece....#mitfordmurders #mystery #jessicafellows

After 2 bails earlier today, I completed my third book of 2019 and started my 4th. I was planning on using this for #booked2019 #femaleDetective but 16yr old Nancy Mitford really doesn‘t qualify as a detective. However book works fine for #pop19 #amateurdetective🕵ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸I‘d call this a British cozy with traces of Miss Marple & Maisie Dobbs. It was a perfectly fine mystery with some nice twists & interesting historical content. (1920s England)
#BookMail 🥰so last week I was so smitten with the new #BookDepository bookmarks I ordered a book JUST to get another bookmark 😛shhhh, don‘t tell hubby. This book was on the #BargainPage and I thought it would work for #pop19 #booked2019 and hopefully #MMD & @thereadingwomen challenge #QuadrupleDip #OverChallenged #YOLO
It was enjoyable. I like the time period and the plot kept me interested.
Henley literary festival is back which means I‘ve been listening to writers talking about murder and mystery again including the above author
A good idea and clever historical referencing, but not that well written. Overall quite average.
Listening to this whilst I fall asleep. As a result I know who did it, but no idea who they are...
I love the premise but don‘t think that it was executed well. Still my love of all things Mitford means I‘ll read the next one when it comes out.

The Mitford Murders is fun, engrossing,& full of intrigue & murder. Set in 1920 England, the novel contrasts the lives of the Mitford‘s impoverished nursemaid Louise Cannon, and the upper class 16 year old Nancy Mitford. A War nurse is murdered on a train & both girls get caught up in solving the case. Issues deriving from poverty such as child exploitation(used for pickpocketing, sex) & class are explored.
I'm fully expecting this to be terrible, but …Mitfords, so I must read it. #anglophilesoflitsy, and #litsywelcomewagon is de rigeur, no?
This started off strong and slowly went downhill from there. It was just ok nothing special.
Next up....I heard a very good interview with the author. These mysteries are based on the real Mitford sisters. There will be six total books in this series.
I'm actually quite annoyed that this book was published. Pedestrian writing, completely lacking in wit, unbelievable "mystery" with far too many convenient connections and unconvincing motivations. I'm sure the Mitford connection was only used as a selling point, the characters bore little relationship to the documented Mitford personalities other than occasional well known idiosyncrasies of speech shoe-horned in every now and then. Ugh!!!???
A retired WWI nurse is found murdered on a train. Those trying to determine whodunnit include a nursery maid, a railway police officer, and young Nancy Mitford. Interesting period details, but I felt something was lacking. The story didn‘t pull me in the way I wanted it to.
This sounded so interesting but the execution is flat. DNF.
@Melissa_J !! You‘ve spoiled me! This is WAY more than the page flags you so nicely said you‘d send to me. 😮
This book has been on my TBR for ages and looks so good. I‘ve restrained myself from buying that mug several times (you know, the whole “I‘ve got a book mug problem†😆) and the Muskoka Chai sounds lovely. The Anne of Green Gables page flags are wonderful and so is your handmade card. Thank you SO much! 😘😘😘
#bookmail thank you @ScorpioBookDreams there‘s always a way around book ban when you have a #bookishtwin 😘😂
Beautiful #bookmail from @DeborahSmall today! I love the Mitford sisters so can‘t wait to read this one. And the cover is gorgeous! ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
I heard mixed things about this one, but I'm enjoying it thus far!
This book was fascinating because it wove fact with fiction. I had no idea that it was based on a true story. I'm a fan of British Historical Mysteries so, I enjoyed the mystery then reading the author notes I learned that there was a notorious Florence Nightingale Shore murder. It's had several plots going, so it kept the storyline moving along for me. This is the first book of a series. I look forward to next book!
