This was a super fun read. It was so interesting to read about women in the workplace during the1 940s-1960s. The glass ceiling was a lot lower then!
“Yes, there‘s one thing I do want. I want to be aware of the minutes and the seconds, and to make each one count.”
The story could easily have fallen into melodrama but the author makes it so you cant sympathise with the characters. you can only observe and feel sorry for them - they are all naïve and deeply flawed. The characters are totally believable and recognizable.

Snort a line of coke while you drown in a sea of vodka and whiskey bottles while wearing your sables and furs, it's the trashiest, campiest novel of it's time. Valley of the Dolls! Three women seek fame and fortune but find depravity and decadence as get caught up in the sex, drugs and rock and roll but with the celebration of prescription meds (dolls)! So wig snatch and catfight your way into Jackie Collins reality show oblivion and read this!
I totally love the 1970‘s-80‘s “soap opera” feel to this book. I find reading books from various eras unique in how writing as well as everything else changes. This was a solid and entertaining read.
#OnThisDay in 1966, Valley of the Dolls was first published. Initially rejected by many publishers, it went on to become the best selling book of the year, leading author Jacqueline Susann to declare "The 1960s will be remembered for Andy Warhol, The Beatles, and Me!” But Susann would rather you skipped the movie adaptation, she didn't mince words when she called it a "piece of shit!" #HistoryGetsLIT
This was the bestselling novel in the U.S. in 1966. It's an over-the-top show-business soap opera, frequently bizarre, like a sequel to Sunset Boulevard directed by John Waters. I loathed the first 100 pages for its annoying characters and its awful prose. But then I started feeling its momentum toward spectacular disaster and could not stop until the book did and am now left with a bewildering just WTF did I just read?

This book took me on a wild adventure and I loved every second of it.
This book is a cult classic and I can definitely see why. There is something oddly intoxicating about it. Like it‘s kind of trashy but at the same time so ahead of its time. It‘s kind of ridiculous at times but still manages to convey a message to readers.

This was a very popular book in the 1960‘s.
Dolls: red or black; capsules or tablets; washed down with vodka or swallowed straight—for Anne, Neely, & Jennifer, it doesn‘t matter, as long as the pill bottle is within easy reach. These 3 women become best friends when they are young & struggling in New York & then climb to the top of the entertainment industry—only to find that there is no place left to go but down—into the Valley of the Dolls.
Final quarter of #booked2019 complete 💚 thanks again @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage for putting this challenge together. I‘m already looking forward to next years ✨

🥇 Soldier‘s story - The Things they Carried
🆕 New in 2019 - The Dutch House
👻 POC paranormal - Kindred
🖥 Public domain - A Christmas Carol
🏛 Political intrigue - The Testaments
This was like watching a reality TV show with all the friendships and drama but where you get to see what goes on behind the scenes too; all the low points of being a ‘star‘ (and there is a lot of them in the latter half). I‘m glad to have finally read it after it being on my tbr for years 💕 #booked2019 #bookaboutaddiction ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yoga and a bit housework done now time to sit and read 😁
This was one of my #fivestarpredictions books which I‘m trying to make an effort to finally read and it fits a #booked2019 prompt so perfect time to start. It‘s one I‘ve wanted to read for years. #MrBook1inaMillion #24B4Monday #LitsyPartyofOne
Jennifer (the one Sharon Tate played in the movie) is bi in the novel! Fucking u.s. film industry, straightwashing everybody.
This book is exciting and trashy and all kinds of depressing, and I might have really loved it. The ending made me SO depressed and there was some hard to swallow language and fat shaming in it that I can‘t bring myself to give it 5 stars on Goodreads JUST YET. #Booked2019 #bookaboutaddiction #spoileralert #its💊💊

This is my review for the book #valleyofthedolls which was my #tbrjarpick for July. This fulfills the #bookishbingo prompt “A Debut Novel”.
I started this audiobook last night. I haven‘t made any more progress today but at least I got started on it. The first chapter is 6 hours long but I have 4 hours left in it now.
I finished listening to 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐎𝐟 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 by 𝐀𝐦𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐬. My next #tbrjarpick to listen to is 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐎𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐬 by 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐧.
Here‘s the synopsis for this audiobook:
“At a time when women were destined to become housewives, Jacqueline Susann let us dream. Anne, Neely, and Jennifer become best friends as struggling young women in New York City trying to make their mark.”
I not only lightened my hair for the first time EVER, but sitting in the chair gave me three hours of only slightly interrupted reading time!
Finally starting this classic! My Daisy Jones hangover has me clamoring for some mid-century drug addicts...
Valley of the dolls 99p on the Kindle. Another love or hate cult classic I haven't read yet.
About Life: “When you‘re climbing Mount Everest, nothing is easy. You just take one step at a time, never look back and always keep your eyes glued to the top.”
“Everyone should at least try to do the thing he wants to do. Later in life situations and responsibilities force people to compromise. But to compromise now . . . it‘s like quitting before you start...
No one should give up a dream without giving it a chance to come true.”
I love it when Half Price Books has a sale!! This is today's rather eclectic haul. I read 'Valley of the Dolls' and 'Manson...' in high school, but I'm looking forward to reading them from an adult perspective. I've also developed a longing for 'Mad Men' era fiction, so two of these should hit the mark! Happy Saturday!! 😊📚
Some more from 1st box from my sale. The Cat‘s Table is autographed. And a Hardcover Pym ! Yay ,sale!
