Orphan Train
Orphan Train: A Novel | Christina Baker Kline
Between 1854 and 1929, so-called orphan trains ran regularly from the cities of the East Coast to the farmlands of the Midwest, carrying thousands of abandoned children whose fates would be determined by pure luck. Would they be adopted by a kind and loving family, or would they face a childhood and adolescence of hard labor and servitude? As a young Irish immigrant, Vivian Daly was one such child, sent by rail from New York City to an uncertain future a world away. Returning east later in life, Vivian leads a quiet, peaceful existence on the coast of Maine, the memories of her upbringing rendered a hazy blur. But in her attic, hidden in trunks, are vestiges of a turbulent past.Seventeen-year-old Molly Ayer knows that a community-service position helping an elderly widow clean out her attic is the only thing keeping her out of juvenile hall. But as Molly helps Vivian sort through her keepsakes and possessions, she discovers that she and Vivian aren't as different as they appear. A Penobscot Indian who has spent her youth in and out of foster homes, Molly is also an outsider being raised by strangers, and she, too, has unanswered questions about the past.Moving between contemporary Maine and Depression-era Minnesota, Orphan Train is a powerful tale of upheaval and resilience, second chances, and unexpected friendship.

An incredibly interesting read, based on true events though with fictional characters, and one that truly felt like someone telling their story. Reading it very much felt true in that way where maybe these exact people weren‘t real but everything that happened to them almost certainly happened to someone. I highly recommend it, though if you‘re prone to tears I recommend keeping tissue nearby.

The best historical fiction books are the ones that teach you about a seemingly forgotten time in our history. Between 1854 and 1929, these Orphan Trains transported more than 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, and homeless children – many of them first-generation Irish Catholic immigrants – from the coastal cities of the eastern United States to the Midwest for “adoption” (often, in fact, indentured servitude).

August is here! Fall is in sight! 🎉🎉The kids are back in school, which means more reading time for this mom. 😉I‘m keeping my kindle pick from last month since I never got around to it. This novel is a heart-ache. Follows the story of two women from abandonment to adoption, and how they deal with everything in between. A deeply moving depiction of human mind when love and acceptance is so hard to come by. 5/5.

This book was so amazing :')

One thing which struck me really funny/relatable was how back in 1939, Vivian for a night out with her girl friends while basically telling home that she's just out for a late movie, which was one of my go to excuse during uni days. Funny how 82 years later, people behaviour never changes 🙂🙂

I really liked this. I thought Vivian‘s story was more interesting than Molly‘s, though I did like the friendship that developed between them. I did know about these trains, as I‘m sure I‘ve read another book on the topic. (Looked it up, similar situation with the British Home Children who were sent to Canada…) My edition of the book has an author‘s note, reading guide, etc, which included some photos of some of the real “orphan train” children

It‘s been a slow start for me this month since the semester wrapped up & my thesis proposal was due. I also got my first dose of the vaccine this weekend so I‘ve been feeling a little yucky, perfect for reading. I finally finished my LMPBC book. This was a part of history that I did not know about. It was interesting to learn about the orphan trains. Overall good story, good if your interested in historical fiction. #bookspin

Gah, this was really good but the history it's based on is so heartbreaking. Intertwining the stories of two very different cultures and eras shows the painful effects of colonialism well into modern time.

While there aren't many surprises, the fact that the stories unfold as expected adds weight to the bleak reality and suffering experienced by the two protagonists.

Lines from Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline:

“With her bright button eyes and pointy snout nosing into Molly‘s business, Lori reminds her of a ferret.”

“Lori gives her a tight smile. A ferrety smile.”

I don‘t think I like what this is implying about ferrets!
