Storm Front
Storm Front: Book one of The Dresden Files | Jim Butcher
For Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name.

Listen, are there things that I‘d change? Sure. Overall, this was fun. Harry wasn‘t some Superman-style all-powerful boy-scout of a character. He‘s kind of a dick, but I think that‘s what kept me turning pages. I wanted to know what happened to everyone. It was worth it, just to meet Bob, to be honest. Anyway, I liked the universe and will read more. August‘s #BookSpin

TheAromaofBooks I've had this book on my TBR forever! I really loved Butcher's Codex Alera series, although I've heard they're quite different from the Dresden Files. 2d
AshleyHoss820 @TheAromaofBooks One of the things people dislike about Butcher‘s writing is that he can‘t seem to write women well, which I can see. Also, Dresden is a bit of a jerkwad. 😂 So I went in to it lightly, knowing it was lightly problematic, but also pretty typical of male authors. I liked the universe he was building, though. The magic was interesting, so I would be willing to read more of this. I‘ll have to check out the one you mentioned too! 2d

I wasn‘t sure I would like this but the hilarious bob helped in a few different ways… I enjoyed Harry and how easily he got himself into trouble… and how he resolved the trouble… good read… thinking about getting the second book to see where certain characters evolve

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I loved this series. One of the first urban fantasy series that I discovered (via an anthology) back when urban fantasy and paranormal romance were really taking off. I lost track of it when the author took an extended hiatus but I have good memories! (edited) 1mo
DogMomIrene I loved this one too. I haven‘t followed through on any long series in a while, but when I decide to tackle one, Dresden is definitely on my list. 1mo

1. Harry Dresden - I love these books. My BIL recommended them to me. Who doesn't love some fantasy mixed with their mysteries.
2. Mikael Blomkvist - I first read the original 3 when they first came out. I haven't read the newer ones yet, but they are sitting on my shelf.
3. Eddie Flynn - I was introduced to this series with Th1rt3en and I was hooked.

I‘m glad I read the book before looking at Goodread reviews, I may have passed on it.

I actually like the MC, and yes some of the women characters are a bit on the screechy side lol (so I can understand some of the negative reviews) but it did not stop me from liking the book.

1.5⭐The only reason I finished this book is because it was for book club. The world is fascinating but Dresden is a chauvinistic ass. I've been told he gets better after book 3, but I have no interest in trudging through more books to find out.

Harry Dresden is a wizard. He‘s also a struggling PI. When gruesome paranormal murders take place, the Chicago PD calls on Harry to help solve the crime. That puts Harry on the radar of some nefarious criminals, and the White Council, the group responsible for overseeing the paranormal to ensure everyone is playing by the rules. Fast paced, action packed and necessary world building. Looking forward to the next book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5

I didn't realize that the narrator of The Dresden Giles was James Marsters! He has nice voice to listen too. I'm not sure that I will like the books but giving it a shot since it's been on my TBR forever. There was a prompt in a challenge for a male author so i picked it. Anybody a fan of the series?

Ruthiella I think @julesG is reading them ALL! 2y
Erinsuereads I finished them at the end of last year. It was a struggle to get into them but they have become one of my all time favorite series 2y
InkedBookworm13 Yes! I haven't read them all but I have enjoyed the ones I have read so far. My brother in law has the whole series on audiobook and he loves them. 2y
julesG @Ruthiella Yes, I'm making my way through them. The first had been on my physical TBR for ages. I struggled a bit getting into the books, but they get better further down the line. I've read the 10th book last week. And yes, the audio narration was the deciding factor in the end. It's fun listening to James Marsters. 2y
Laughterhp I really enjoy this series and love it on audio! I think I have 1 more book to read of this series. 2y

This was my irl bookclub's pick for the month. I thought the magic system was super interesting & the main character was delightfully snarky. It played on an old noir theme with a very dark magical murder to solve. There were some issues with misogynistic descriptions about women & not giving enough background info on some aspects of the magical world. But as first in a series and one of this author's earliest books, there's room for improvement.

Witty, entertaining, magical, crime, sarcasm and a talking skull named Bob. This book was so good! I was recommended this book years ago but never read it because I didn't think I'd like it. It is such a good story. Think witches and law and order. It is a five star and I WILL be reading the rest of the series!

shanaqui I read the first couple of books in this series long long ago and was promised the series gets amazing etc etc, but I just can't hang on through books that don't grab me for a payoff way down the line! (Also, Harry Dresden as a character drives me bananas.) 3y

Thank you for this #Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView and for the tag @Branwen 😀

1. I‘d gladly read about both witches and wizards! 🧙‍♀️🧙‍♂️

2. I‘m cheating a bit and instead of a book, I‘m going with my favorite series… Harry Dresden! Sure, most people would pick that “other” Harry‘s series, but the tagged book was my first foray into urban fantasy, and I loved reading about a snarky wizard interacting with all kinds of paranormal creatures! 👻🧛‍♀️

🎧 This will be my 3rd time reading this series.

I loved this TV series so much I read the books. Twice.

This is a good start to this series. You get to know who & what Harry is. You meet Bob, Murphy, Marcone, Morgan the warden, Carmichael, Mister (Harry‘s cat) & Susan the reporter.

Hearts are exploding out of people‘s chests, a frog faced demon attacks, giant scorpions & there‘s a new drug that makes your 3rd eye open.

Great series!

A witty fantasy story with adult themes. If Harry Potter grew up to be a broke and virtually friendless PI…. A lot of things going on with the plot, almost too much.

Traci1 I think this one is the weakest in the series. They do get better. 3y
Nebklvr @Traci1 I have the second one. Will give it a try. 3y
SilverShanica The farther you get the better the series gets. It‘s one of those series where there is a lot set out in this book that seems minor, but that comes back later on and is a major thing. 3y
KimHM The series definitely gets better, not so obvious and lazy re: character development. 3y
Nebklvr @SilverShanica @KimHM The second one was better but too violent for me. Thanks for the info and happy reading! 3y

I started the Dresden Files this year and it has quickly become one of my favorite series I‘m currently reading. So far I‘ve read the first 3 books, 2 graphic novels, and a short story. I love the sarcasm and the way the characters act but that might be because I‘m from Chicago and it seems kind of nostalgic.

This was a bit of a meh read that went over to nope at times. But at least it was fast to read. I really didn‘t appreciate the way the female characters were depicted and I didn‘t care about Harry at all. But the magic system was cool and the plot was just interesting enough for me to keep reading. However I think it‘s safe to say that I won‘t be picking up the rest of the series.

This is a blame it on Litsy book. I saw a review and thought I have to read this. I loved the MC Harry Dresden. He has just the right amount of humility and coolness to go along with his wizardry that I found him fascinating. The plot was good and it was fast paced. Great start to the series. 4⭐

I know that a lot of people love this series but it wasn't for me. I didn't establish any bond with the main character (and great characters are as important as a great plot to me). Another reason was that I didn't really enjoy the story arc; I was lost a bit and too many things happened seemingly randomly; I felt as if the lore and the world itself wasn't well thought through. It felt as if the author had a random checklist of things to include.

This book was awesome. It took some time for me to get used to the writing, not because it was complicated but because it was so unique. By the end, the writing grew on me & I loved it. My only complaint with the story was the irrelevance of the "all powerful" white council. There were instances when I hd to suspend disbelief but am letting it is pass in favor of my enjoyment percentage which was quite high.

50% in, I love the humour, the writing is different than I am used to. Strangely enough I am gripped by the story though I can't pinpoint to exactly what it is that I am liking or not liking about this book. It's a fast read so I am hoping to finish it soon enough. 🤞🤞

I don't dislike this book but it's also not doing much for me and I'm starting to wonder if I should be reading it instead of listening. This is the first time I've experienced an adverse reaction to a narrator. I don't really have time to switch to reading it though...I need audiobooks to help me get through everything for #BookSpinBingo this month! 🙃
