A Year of Reading
A Year of Reading: A Month-by-month Guide to Classics and Crowd-pleasers for You and Your Book Group | Elisabeth Ellington, Jane Freimiller
28 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
There are more than fifty thousand new books published each year. Choosing what to read can seem overwhelming. A Year of Reading relieves the anxiety by helping readers find just the right book for each month of the year. Aimed at individuals and reading groups, A Year of Reading provides five fiction and nonfiction selections for each month with thorough summaries in the following categories: Crowd-Pleasers, Classics, Challenges, Memoirs and Potluck. This book also makes reading more fulfilling by providing additional selections, plus questions about the selections to stimulate thought and discussion. Also included is information on authors, reviews, video and Internet resources and annotated lists of related reading. And if you still think reading is too passive, try one of the many activities suggested, such as author readings, visits to museums, nature hikes and more. The appendices focus on book clubs, from the basics of starting your own to improving a group that has been together for some time.

Your 'year of reading' from Goodreads has a different look this year.
Edit: 😆, it doesn't. It's the same at the website.

My actual stats - read a few books not on Goodreads. I read a lot of great books and only few bad ones🎉
I‘ve reached Mount Kilimanjaro for #MountTBR and #MountTBRChallenge @DivaDiane which means 62 books. Without gifts and bookshop giftcards and work/Uni books I‘ve only bought 24 new books - which is surprisingly little😁 all together a successfull reading year🎉

Amiable Great job, especially with Mount TBR! 👍🏼👍🏼 6y

I‘m pleased with my finaly Goodreads Count😍 the high book number is only due to a lot of very short books, but I still managed to read much more than the previous years😊 I hope next year will be as bookish and I hope everyone has a brilliant start into the new year😘🌟🥂🎉

Heideschrampf I have THE NEW GHOST aswell! Fell in love with it in a small scottisch gallery. Were did you find it? 6y
ju.ca.no @Heideschrampf I was searching for the New Peculiar Book by Ransom Riggs called Map of Days, and the Author of the New Ghost also has a book called Map of Days, and the cover looked pretty - I ended up ordering the new ghost as it was cheaper but I really loved it and should get some of his other comics as well😍 6y

Sorcerer to the Crown
The King‘s Mistress
The Little Giant of Aberdeen County
One Kick
El Deafo
And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer

WarpedSweetness I think you did great in 2017! 7y

Smangela @rustoryhuf 😍😍 she was amazing! My husband brought this back for me from a trip to Philadelphia in college and Only started using it last year - Litsy made me realize I could do a book journal - for someone who loves journals but sucks at consistently journaling it was a win! Haha 7y
DivineDiana Love this! How did you calculate average rating and gender percentages? Did you do it the old fashioned way via mathematics?!? 🤔 7y

Not near my goal, but I am proud of myself! Not bad for full-time graduate student and working over 50 hours a week. Next year's goals mostly involve tackling some of the very large number of books and ebooks that I already own but have not read 📚

IT'S LATE BUT WELL-PLANNED WITH LOTS OF WIGGLE ROOM
My 2017 reading plan has finally taken shape.
It is not genre-specific and will help me accomplish
current, backlist, and TBR goals. Monthly recaps
will focus on my list of broad categories and will
display how well I adhered to my reading plan.
My only genre-related goal is to read all 10 plays in
"August Wilson's Century Cycle." #Donna_sBookYear2017 #TBR

Lesliereads I love your plan for selecting from your TBR; and reading all of August Wilson's century cycle.👍🏾 8y

Happy New Year Littens! After much deliberation (classic over thinker right here!), I have decided which reading challenges to strive for in 2017...
1️⃣ Goodreads Challenge: 75 books in 2017
2️⃣ #LitsyReadingChallenge 2017 (see bingo card above!)
3️⃣ #birthdaychallenge: 1986 - 2017 (excellent idea @TheNextBook ! 😊)
4️⃣ #bookriot #readharder2017 challenge

(and if I'm feeling extra ambitious!!)
5️⃣ Modern Mrs. Darcy's or PopSugar challenge

asiriusreader Unlike all the rest of you organized readers, I have no spreadsheet or list of books decided on...just a desire to tackle these challenges this year! Anywho, happy fresh year of reading to all! 🎉📖 8y
TheNextBook Thats an awesome list!!! #birthdaychallenge! Have fun! 8y
OSChamberlain @asiriusreader I like your plan of attack! It's much more sporadic and fun ☺ 8y
asiriusreader @TheNextBook thank you! You inspired me with your #birthdaychallenge posts. Can't wait to dive in! 8y
asiriusreader @OSChamberlain yes, thank you! I just didn't want to be locked in to reading specific books...I like to keep my reading options open! 😄 8y

This shouldn't be hard, considering I've decided to do three reading challenges this year: #LitsyAtoZ #birthdaychallenge and #2017readingchallenge. Expanding my horizons and interests with those lists (the majority of which are TBR). Wish me luck! ❤📚😊

I posted my #topreads2016 earlier this week (see #2016toptenbooks 😃) so I'm going to post my updated and final #yearinbooks. I read more than I thought (my goal for the year was 257 on GR) and that's largely thanks to litsy and all it's cool peeps recommending awesome new books left and right. Thanks y'all! Looking forward to more great reads and fun photo challenges in the new year! #seasonsreadings2016

The year isn't quite over so the numbers may change slightly - but Goodreads let me know that my year in books is up. 😃 I was a bit surprised by my most popular book - mainly in that number of other people read is much lower than I thought it'd be. Also, is it weird that this makes me want to read a super obscure book next year so for my 'least popular' book I'll have been the only one to read it? 😆 #yearinbooks

LindsayReads That very situation happened with my "least popular" book...I was the only person who shelved it. It was also the highest rated one, too. ? 8y
LindsayReads Though now I think I need to read 8y
Eyelit @LindsayReads you've got me interested... what was the book? 8y

LindsayReads Oh, the monograph of my aunt's work 😂 8y
Samwise_Gamgee World's ugliest dog contest?! Haha I'm interested in that!! 8y
InLibrisVeritas My least popular book has only one person (me). It was called Jughead by CJ Frye, a mystery by a local author. 😬 8y
Eyelit @InLibrisVeritas how was it? 8y
InLibrisVeritas I thought it was okay. Good writing, but it didn't blow me away. It was a fun read, but average overall 8y

"Which among the tens of thousands of books published each year are worth reading? How do we make choices? How can we get more out of our reading?" Sometimes it seems like reading has become a competition, instead of reading for the enjoyment of the process. Do we think deeply about what we read?

This is a brilliant concept: a bookclub reference with 5 title suggestions around a monthly theme, descriptions of the title and author background, reflection questions and further reading suggestions for each title. Written in 2003, I would be interested in a 2nd or 3rd edition.

Spiderfelt Have you belonged to a book group? What worked and what hasn't worked? How do you choose the titles? 9y
marita I was part of a poetry book club. We put forward suggestions and came to a consensus. We only met a few times before I moved away. It was fun. 9y
