Glass Room | Ann Cleeves
29 posts | 26 read | 4 to read
DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but her hippy neighbours keep her well-supplied in homebrew and conversation so she has more tolerance for them than most. When one of them goes missing she feels duty-bound to find out what happened. But her path leads her to more than just a missing friend.

At a writers' retreat, one of Vera's neighbours is discovered wandering the corridors with a knife in her hand moments after a dead stabbing victim is found.

Enjoyable mystery.

A good escape but not my favorite in the series so far. A writers‘ retreat where the attendees start being killed off. Vera‘s crankiness was less endearing this time around and it all seemed to drag on a bit.

EvieBee I agree! 2y

It was a dark and stormy night!!
It certainly was, couldn‘t sleep through the noise. Early morning read in bed.

Cathythoughts Morning Trish ! Hope you‘re having a brilliant time X 3y
rockpools Oh no! I thought it‘d be quiet up there. I‘ve been listening to wheely bins blowing up and down the street for HOURS here! Have decided today is not the day to renew my exercise regime! 3y

Another solid Vera mystery that I couldn‘t put down once I‘d started. I like Vera and the dynamics of the team, and how each member contributes to the investigation.

Having watched the Vera series on TV I had to agree with my partner, who read this book first, that you can imagine Vera and Joe saying the words written in the story. Following the case in this story was long and drawn out, ideal for a TV series, it was far to slow a read for my liking. Even with compelling content I couldn't say that I liked this book. Compared with other crime novels is was just OKish

#ReadingEurope2020 #EuropeanMysteries
This month I read 3 European authors. I decided to try & read as many mystery translations as I can find while reading across Europe. I am open to any suggestions from Littens!
❤️📚💃

Librarybelle I like that idea! 5y
Crazeedi Martin Walker for France, this is the first one, I've read almost all of them, and totally enjoy 5y
BarbaraBB The most well known Dutch mystery writer is AC Baantjer. He wrote a series about a detective called DeKok, I‘ll tag one. (edited) 5y

Texreader I really enjoy Jussi Adler Olsen‘s mysteries set in Denmark. Of course there are countless Nordic mystery writers. My Norwegian husband‘s fave is an author who writes mysteries about his hometown of Bergen, Gunnar Staalesen. I got some translated copies when we went to London. 5y
BookishMe Jo Nesbo' Harry Hole series is popular, if you haven't read already ;)) I recently enjoyed 5y
kspenmoll @Crazeedi @BarbaraBB @Texreader @BookishMe Thank you so much for your suggestions! I appreciate your help & plan to check these authors out.🥰 5y
kspenmoll @Librarybelle I read so many mysteries that this makes sense if I can pull it off!!! 5y
Texreader James R Benn is a mystery writer my husband is reading now. This one I‘m going to use for Vatican City: 5y
Texreader Kevin Wignall has written mysteries set all over Europe. I read To Die in Vienna for Austria. He has one set in Sweden. I‘m currently reading, for Spain, a very good and fast read: (edited) 5y
Texreader This one is not categorized as a mystery but as general fiction but it is a mystery, as a girl tries to identify who killed her father, and it‘s set in Albania: 5y
BookishMe @Texreader thanks for sharing about Kevin Wignall. Will check out his books! 5y

Vera has an aha moment of clarity while “... hurtling through the night in the carriage...” She knows who the murderer is. “...she just has to prove it.” Vera seems to percolate all her tidbits of information until just the right amount of brewing time. I have not seen the TV series based on these books. Thinking of checking season one out.

Eggs If you are referring to “Shetland”, it is top-of-the-line!!! Highly recommend 5y
kspenmoll @Eggs The Shetland series is same author, different setting & detectives. I have seen some & they were so well done! 5y
BlameJennyJane Vera is one of my favorite shows! 5y
Librarybelle Cleeves‘ books are on my to read list! 5y

The light had almost disappeared and the mist had returned like a fine drizzle on her skin. On the terrace the wrought-iron furniture appeared ghostly and insubstantial, a distorted memory of warm summer days.

I really love coming to a series late, that way I know I have many books to look forward to reading. Halfway through the Vera series by Ann Cleeves and they are just perfect for my hectic lifestyle right now.

I usually enjoy Ann Cleeves, but I was disappointed in this particular Vera Stanhope mystery. I just didn't care who did it. Or why. That being said...I love Vera and Joe as characters.

#bookisholympics Its 12.15am Sunday here so I've officially finished the olympics. Yay! As well as the nine books here, I also finished The Glass Room by Ann Cleeves & I got through half of A Court of Thorns & Roses. So all up its 10.5 books in 7 days. I'm quite proud of that, though I do have a lot more free time than most people competing, but hell. Not bad for a self taught reader! #goingforplatinum🏅🏋

#bookisholympics #bookthree Ok, book three is done & dusted. Would have been done an hour ago but the hubby coaxed me onto his motorbike for the first time since I was 21. I haven't felt that free in years, I even let go and had my arms up like on a roller coaster! Anyway, book. Right. This was another brilliant Vera book, about a group of aspiring writers at a retreat until one of the tutors is murdered. Very entertaining. #rebelwithoutacause

#bookisholympics #bookthree Onto book three, & I've picked The Glass Room, book5 in the Vera Stanhope Mysteries. DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but when her neighbour goes missing she feels obligated to help. When she's found alive & well at a writers retreat, Vera is relieved, but a body is found & her neighbour is there with a knife in her hand. At 374pges long it's well above the novel cutoff, plus the font is really tiny!

Varshitha Wow.. Book 3 already 😳 8y

Lizpixie @Varshitha @Eyelit @TheSpinecrackersBookClub why, thank you!😊 I've always been a fast reader, and let's face it, I have a lot of time on my hands. 8y
Thessalia I have that same LEGO creation that I just had to fix yesterday because my clumsy ass was trying to move it for some books! Today I plan on assembling the VW Bug counterpart I just got (after a little more reading obviously) 😆 8y
Lizpixie @Thessalia hah! When we were finishing off the library, my daughter picked this up by the roof, moving it for books as well. The resultant mess when it came off in her hand and the rest crashed to the floor, took us a week to fix, because my loving husband threw away all the instruction books!🙄 8y
