This book was described as “powerful” and “haunting”- accurate description. A powerful read about the life of a man & his family , during Afghanistan‘s Violent political struggles. So we‘ll written, but heartbreaking to know while this is fiction the events describe are real for far too many

I give this book 4/5 stars. the story was amazing, and i think that is deals with hard topics like suicide and SA as they should be handled. you can tell that there really was a lot of compassion and emotion that was put into this story, it is real and raw. the only reason that i took off a star is that i do not like the MC. how are we supposed to feel bad for him when all he does is make matters worse? but, i understand that we are all human.

I started reading the Graphic Novel but after reading half of it I thought I needed to really read the real novel. I don't like Graphic novels at all. They just do not convey the essence of the story. I really liked this book. It opened my eyes to what happened over in Afghanistan. The culture and the racism that exists is brought to the surface. This is considered inspirational for the #NSR221 @Nessavamusic #LitsyLiveReads

StayCurious It really depends on the graphic novel. I bet you‘d like an original story - not one adapted from something else 2y

I‘d largely abandoned novels in favor of non-fiction. But 3 novels have deeply affected me A Gentleman in Moscow, The Lincoln Highway, and now The Kite Runner. This novel, about trust given unconditionally, trust betrayed, and trust regained, is a compelling read. The plot twists are not cliches; the characters believable; and the insights into a new culture compelling. A must read novel. I‘m sorry it‘s taken me 19 years to finally read it.

EASY AFGHANI KABULI PULAO/RICE

I wish I had time to try all the food mentioned in this book…it all sounds wonderful. I didn‘t know what to expect from Afghan flavors, but I‘d like to learn more. I really liked this method for cooking rice…I think I‘ll incorporate it into my regular rotation.

I‘m still only about halfway through the book. (Continued below under spoiler ⬇️)

#FoodandLit #Afghanistan

Maggie4483 The chapters about Baba‘s death were hard. I lost my own dad to pulmonary disease (don‘t smoke!), and there were lots of similarities (including Baba making sure Amir got married before he passed. Nothing came of it, but my sweet Daddy tried to set me up with every man that came into his hospital room 😂. He was not a good wingman…none of them were available). 2y
Texreader I can imagine that made the read hard for you. I‘m so sorry! But I did have to laugh about his trying to set you up! 2y
Maggie4483 @Texreader thank you ❤️. It‘s been almost 11 years, so I‘m not actively grieving anymore. But every now and then I‘ll read or watch something that takes me right back there. And, yes, my dad playing matchmaker from his hospital bed was hilarious…it‘s probably one of my top 10 favorite memories of him. 2y

This book was fine. Until the MC got a phone call and then it just became a total cluster, full of eye rolling coincidences and unnecessary trauma. I loved learning about Afghan history and culture, so it wasn‘t a complete loss for me, but I think I need to listen to my gut about steering clear of NYT bestsellers 🙄. Sorry to be a hater for this one, #foodandlit!

Afghani Burani Banjan (Afghan Eggplant and Tomato with Yogurt Sauce).

The lentils are undercooked, and I could live without the yogurt sauce (but I don‘t think I got the right kind of yogurt). But otherwise it‘s good. I love eggplant!

I didn‘t expect this book to be any easy read, but it‘s so much tougher than I thought it‘d be. The scene with the pomegranates was heartbreaking.

#FoodandLit Buddy Read Check-in

Oof how are y'all doing with this book?
I'm a third through and already have been crying. I knew this book would be heavy but I didn't realize it would be keep-me-up-all-night-haunt-my-dreams heavy.

Bookwormjillk I tried on audio but couldn‘t focus, so I‘m about to start again on paper. I‘ve read this before and remember sobbing on the metro. 3y
Maggie4483 I‘m not that far yet, and can tell it‘s going to be tough. The part where Amir talks about his first word being “Baba” while Hassan‘s first word was “Amir” really struck me. And how Amir says he didn‘t consider Hassan his “friend” (nor did Baba think of Ali as his friend), despite all evidence to the contrary. I think the differences in classes will play a big role. 3y
Maggie4483 I‘m also really interested in learning more about the Hippie Trail (I had to Google “hippies in Afghanistan). My whole life, I‘ve always equated that part of the world with war. I never thought about it being somewhere that people would have ever chosen to visit (I should know better…my mother was born in Venezuela, someplace I‘ve always wanted to visit but now fear I probably won‘t ever be able to). (edited) 3y

Cazxxx I cried a lot the first time I read it. Have it on audiobook this time and enjoying the narration very much. It‘s been many years since my first read and wonder if I‘ll still love it as much this time around 3y
Catsandbooks @Maggie4483 I always thought of that part of the world as war torn as well. Probably because we have been at war or had troops there for most if not all of my life. Also my public school education was always focused on the US and the American revolution. So I'm having to educate myself about the world as an adult and it's eye opening! 3y
