Common Sense
Common Sense | Thomas Paine
Enormously popular and widely read pamphlet, first published in January of 1776, clearly and persuasively argues for American separation from Great Britain and paves the way for the Declaration of Independence. This highly influential landmark document attacks the monarchy, cites the evils of government and combines idealism with practical economic concerns.

If you like history this is a great read. Fast and easy to understand. Common Sense is about building America and it‘s new values through the eyes of a founding father.

Mehso-so

• Started out strong and tapered off at the halfway point; I suppose it was just the antiquated language and the unfamiliar historical laws of the time which bored me a lot. Highly intellectual read and I did enjoy the first half more than I expected. Still a so-so read, overall. Plan to read more Paine though •

My first read of 2019. I‘m giving it a pick because I think it‘s important that we are well versed in our country‘s history - and that includes the racism and sexism of the founding ideas. I don‘t believe the founders or their influencers are beyond reproach- we can appreciate what they did brilliantly, but we must also deal with what they got wrong or we‘ll never move forward.

You have to meet a book where it lives, not where you want it to be. After this was mentioned in several of the presidential biographies I‘d read, I thought I should read it. When I take off my 21st Century glasses and think like someone in the 1700‘s, I understand how this pamphlet reignited (and in some cases ignited) passion for independence from Great Britain. There was a LOT going on in this time period and it was interesting to read this.

TrishB That‘s a very good comment when you‘re dealing with sexism, racism and bigotry in general for older books! 6y
AshleyHoss820 @TrishB It‘s difficult when reading and those issues come up. 😕 I‘ve found it easier to remember when the book was written. 😊 6y

This political piece using the appeal of religious zeal and hatred of “the other” is painful to read, though he does make a sound argument to fell the divine right of kings. Also, the morbid irony of his criticism against the so-called “slavery” the British colonists experience under the King‘s rule and William the Conqueror‘s invasion of England “against the consent of the natives...” I really want to smack him with his hypocrisy. @SerialReader

Trashcanman I bailed on this one. I just couldn't hang with it. 6y
Megara @Trashcanman I can‘t blame you! It took me a long time to get through it. I could complain about Common Sense all day long. Haha 6y
Megara Note: you have to dig through his biblical references and anti-semitism to actually find an argument against monarchy that flows. 6y

Billypar @rachellayown Ack - sorry my online conversational ineptitude strikes again. My comment should have had a 😋 attached to it... My 100th book of year 2016!

Paine is a product of his time. I think his writings regarding the independence of the US are fascinating, but you do have to put up with some prejudices. I'd still recommend it, however, for those interested in philosophy or US history, or those who are American citizens. 😜 #ReadHarder2016 #bookinpolitics
