The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir: Vintage Movie Classics | R. A. Dick
The basis for Joseph L. Mankiewiczs cinematic romance starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. Burdened by debt after her husband's death, Lucy Muir insists on moving into the very cheap Gull Cottage in the quaint seaside village of Whitecliff, despite multiple warnings that the house is haunted. Upon discovering the rumors to be true, the young widow ends up forming a special companionship with the ghost of handsome former sea captain Daniel Gregg. Through the struggles of supporting her children, seeking out romance from the wrong places, and working to publish the captain's story as a book, Blood and Swash, Lucy finds in her secret relationship with Captain Gregg a comfort and blossoming love she never could have predicted. Originally published in 1945, made into a movie in 1947, and later adapted into a television sitcom in 1968, this romantic tale explores how love can develop without boundaries, both in this life and beyond. With a new foreword by Adriana Trigiani. Vintage Movie Classics spotlights classic films that have stood the test of time, now rediscovered through the publication of the novels on which they were based.

October: THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR
This will be fun to put together at the end of the year! 🤩

kspenmoll Can you explain to me how the brackets off each month etc works? 🤪 2w
dabbe @kspenmoll I'll try! The far left and right columns are for your favorite book of each month. For ex., for January (upper left), my fave book was A STUDY IN SCARLET. As you fill in the months, once you have two months down (like Jan and March in the left column), you then have to pick your favorite from just those two; for me, BABEL won out over SCARLET. ⬇️ (edited) 2w
dabbe @kspenmoll ... Then, you just keep following the brackets, picking your top choice of the two until your #1 is chosen for the entire year. Does that make sense? 😝🤪😛 2w

What a charming story. And I was surprised by its reflective depth, in addition to the humorous scenes I expected. This was a #CastTheDie selection, as well as my #ReadOrDonate choice for October, but I won‘t be donating it. 😉

I adored the movie as a teenager. The dialogue of the saucy sea captain was a delight to read, as was the relationship that develops between Mrs. Muir and her captain ghost. The movie followed the book fairly well, and I totally applaud the movie for leaving out the dreaded son, Cyril. A quick read at < 200 pages, if you love an impossible romance, this one suffices. Yet, I think I prefer the movie over the book. Probably because of #sexyrexy. 😀

I am in the early 1900s in the seaside town of Whitecliff in Dorset, England. I'm living in Gull Cottage with the previous owner, an ornery captain who happens to be dead and is now a ghost. Loved this movie, so now I'm reading the book!

It was a nostalgic reading maybe remembering those old movies which I like to watch sometimes. After her husband death, Lucy moved to this house to change her life, good for her. But the house was haunted by the “ghost” of Captain Gregg who used to scared everyone except Lucy. Then, the story goes narrating the strange relationship between these two characters. It was an unrealistic but pleasant read for this fall season. 3⭐️

My favorite fictional spirit is Captain Gregg from the tagged book. I don‘t picture him as depicted on this vintage dust jacket, though. Rex Harrison and Edward Mulhare are more my taste in sea captains. 😄

I‘ve always enjoyed this movie (1947), although I haven‘t seen it in awhile. I came across the #audiobook on Audible Plus. It‘s only 5 hours or so and is quite enjoyable. Very easy listening and soothing to listen to around bedtime. I will say I like the character of Lucy better in the movie. She‘s a bit too uptight and naive for my tastes sometimes in the book. But the narrator is great! Such a fun ghost story. 3.75⭐️

I thought this was a lovely, sweet little read. It‘s quite humorous, too. I loved the characters. I would class it as more of a novella than a novel as it‘s fairly short at under 200 pages.

I don't know quite was I was expecting but whatever it was this wasn't it. I had trouble deciding if this was a pick or a so-so but there were some clever turns of phrase & some lines that made me laugh &, most of all, reflections from Lucy on the joys of quiet and solitude (like the one above) which pushed this over to a pick for me. All the same I'm glad it was short & that it's over. I suspect I'd like the movie much better, maybe I'll try it.

Lauren.Archer I did not know this was a book. I just love the movie 6y

I didn't much mind the Victorian attitudes on display in this book as it was actually written then- I even found Lucy's silliness a little charming, esp when she waxes poetic about the quiet life she's arranged for herself- but this infuriated me. She (pretty much) came to her senses but I'm now glad this book is so short as I'm not sure I want to spend much more time with her. 😠
