A collection of short ghost stories all written by the author. Like many collections, it's a mixed bag - some of the stories are really quite effective with the ambience & creeping sense of menace, whereas others either wander off into too much extraneous detail or frustratingly fizzle out just as they're getting good. Given James's background, it shouldn't come as a surprise that so many of the stories are based around religion & the Church.

This is the first book in a new series that features Ruby, a young woman, & Cordelia, a 40 something woman who is a ghost and used to live in Ruby's apartment. I enjoyed it as it was a decent mystery about the death of a neighbour and had nice humor and quirky characters. The ending sets us up for the next book, which I look forward to reading. My only beef was why does Cordelia not print using pen & paper? Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. 4/5 !

Book 98📚 3⭐️

A soft pick. Typical middle of the road haunting/possession.

Nothing too wild but still a good read.

I would use this more geared toward my older students say in 5th grade. I could use this as a literature circle and use it to spark discussions with my group. I could also use it as a classroom library book.

Jonathan Stroud‘s The Screaming Staircase is a thrilling blend of mystery, humor, and supernatural chills. Set in a world plagued by deadly ghosts, the story follows three daring teenagers who run Lockwood & Co., a ghost-hunting agency. Packed with action, and spine-tingling encounters, a tale that's as eerie as it is captivating. Stroud‘s complex characters make it a standout in the paranormal genre, appealing to both teens and adults.

The Woman in Black is a spooky, sad ghost story with an amazing sense of place.

This is a collection of Victorian-era (if memory serves) ghost stories. Are they bone-chilling, jump-out-of-your-skin scary? No, but they‘re thought-provoking and fun, in some cases. There‘s usually a larger comment about society at play with Victorian stories. Anyway, give this one a go if only for The Monkey‘s Paw! ☺️ April‘s Double #BookSpin

This has been sitting on my shelf waiting to be read for longer than anticipated, I somehow missed that it was the sequel to Sheets - so backtracked to read that first and then… kind of forgot about this! Oops! But it‘s never too late to read a gorgeous graphic novel on a Saturday night.

This book does a beautiful job of showing how it‘s not always easy to be yourself (especially when you are in Year 8) - but that it‘s well worth the effort.
