Another day of training, another lovely selection!
Another day of training, another lovely selection!
“Intolerable sadness was tolerated by closing the book on a life, one never to be reopened.”
Another year of mandatory training and the only way to survive…a good book and a Pepsi
“Knowledge can forestall fear.”
I don‘t agree with his political views but he certainly makes reading history entertaining. What I thought was just going to be a discussion about the Salem Witch Trials turned into one of religious freedoms and the American Revolution. Who knew we had a problem with the separation of church and state from the beginning!
Just a little reading while I am stuck in yearly training!
Seems appropriate to be reading this waiting to see the doc
“To be finished with life, one needs to be utterly exhausted, and worn out by heartache”
“When a thoughtless or unkind word is spoken, best tune out. Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance one‘s ability to persuade.”
“Fear comes with the dark when you‘re lying still, waiting for the knock on the door. And fear is not always reasonable.”
“The world is beautiful, but people make it ugly.”
“Change isn‘t about getting taller or changing the roof over your head. Change happens in your heart, in your way of thinking, of moving in the world.”
“We all make decisions, and those decisions affect other people. They ripple through the world, and the more power you have, the greater the ripple.”
“The morality of an action depends, ultimately and only, on it‘s outcomes.”
Got sucked into the Bridgerton craze while recuperating from emergency bowel surgery. So far so good.
“…the impossible is merely the possible for which we don‘t yet know the science.”
Think I will be keeping this series after tomorrow (which is National Clean Out Your Bookcase Day). Love this series and was so happy to have found it. Saddened to hear that the author is battling cancer at the moment. Sending her happy vibes and thoughts of warm comforting bowls of noodles
Watched Shadowlands last night with the hubby (if you haven‘t seen, I highly recommend the version with Sir Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger) before settling down to read this. This week was the 10th anniversary of my Oma‘s passing and I‘m finding it a little hard. Perhaps this will help.
I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but then again I have a sick sense of humour and find true crime fascinating. I also work in the prison system so I understand the authors dark sense of humour and her “female in a male dominated job” life. Her style of writing was informative but not condescending making it easy to read and understand.
Another day of training and a good book. Today: Defensive Tactics!
Picked this up because I needed something meaningful in my life right now. Something that questions and enlightens. Think this might just do the trick
“Tyrants are not easy to oppose or walk away from, especially when you depend on them for everything.”
“Now, don‘t turn your nose up to a little make-believe,” he said. “Sometimes, you need to be someplace else for a while. Even if that place exists only in your head.”
“The dawn had crept in on little cat‘s feet, and here she was, whispering with light, lifting the mist.”
“A good Theater is like a Petri dish, cultivating all sorts of surprises within the confines of a very limited space, and it is of paramount importance that this process be disturbed as little as possible by the vicissitudes of the world at large.”
“Why do we pray when we are terrified? Why do we reserve this ancient and primitive ritual for moments of great distress? It is always the same supplication: O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me.”
Nothing beats a good book when you are feeling Blah!
If they are doing this for all the books, I can see my pay checks evaporating in front of my eyes!
Just a little “light” reading
This is my philosophy as well, maybe we are kindred spirits, Alex and I.
“For me, life is a whole experience, not just a series of isolated moments. It‘s like submerging yourself into a warm bath rather than sticking your toe under the faucet. It‘s the totality of life.”
Found a new series that I just can‘t seem to put down. Picked up numbers 3-5 at my bookstore but held off starting them before I ordered 1 & 2. I have to start at the beginning of a series (I‘m slightly OCD) but binge read them. Bummed that now I have to wait a few days before number 6 arrives. But they say anticipation makes it taste that much better! Also, the goth in me squeals every time I look on the covers to see the skulls “hidden” there
Thoroughly enjoying this series. Picked it up on a whim but now can‘t put them down. Read until my eyes bleed but in an hour, I‘m picking it back up for more. Kinda like Chinese food, an hour later you‘re hungry for more!
It has always fascinated me how books of all styles and genres can have an impact on a person. A book can shape someone; change their life, impact or re-create them, entertain them or influence them.”
“Rumors are like rain through an old roof. The effort of finding the source is greater than the cost of a new roof.”
“Nothing in history was a firsthand account, and the things known really meant things that were allowed to be known.”
“A successful lie is not fueled by the liar; it is fueled by the willingness of the listener to believe. You can‘t expose a lie without first shattering the wall to believe it. That is why leading people to truth is so much more effective than merely telling them.”
“Change will always face resistance, but we must forge forward in spite of it.”
“He was so eccentric as to suggest he might be genuinely nuts.”
“But theatre is the hallmark of ritual, and ritual is the touchstone of religion.”
“I don‘t exactly have a voice if thunder,” Grayson pointed out. “You can whisper and people will still hear thunder.”
Binged Sherlock and now reading the source material!
“Never underestimate the power of thousands of human minds all believing the same thing. They can remake reality. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not.”
The ONLY thing keeping me sane the last three days of sickness
“I believe that pain increases the intelligence of the stupid, and if inmates want to act stupid, then we‘ll give them some pain to help increase their intelligence level.” Great reading while in training on how to deal with offenders!
“Perfection is for people who are lying to themselves.” Waiting for the rest of my carpool!
