We Have Always Lived in the Castle
We Have Always Lived in the Castle | Shirley Jackson
Visitors call seldom at Blackwood House. Taking tea at the scene of a multiple poisoning, with a suspected murderess as one's host, is a perilous business. For a start, the talk tends to turn to arsenic. "It happened in this very room, and we still have our dinner in here every night," explains Uncle Julian, continually rehearsing the details of the fatal family meal. "My sister made these this morning," says Merricat, politely proffering a plate of rum cakes, fresh from the poisoner's kitchen. We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Shirley Jackson's 1962 novel, is full of a macabre and sinister humor, and Merricat herself, its amiable narrator, is one of the great unhinged heroines of literature. "What place would be better for us than this?" she asks, of the neat, secluded realm she shares with her uncle and with her beloved older sister, Constance. "Who wants us, outside? The world is full of terrible people." Merricat has developed an idiosyncratic system of rules and protective magic, burying talismanic objects beneath the family estate, nailing them to trees, ritually revisiting them. She has made "a powerful taut web which never loosened, but held fast to guard us" against the distrust and hostility of neighboring villagers.Or so she believes. But at last the magic fails. A stranger arrives -- cousin Charles, with his eye on the Blackwood fortune. He disturbs the sisters' careful habits, installing himself at the head of the family table, unearthing Merricat's treasures, talking privately to Constance about "normal lives" and "boy friends." Unable to drive him away by either polite or occult means, Merricat adopts more desperate methods. The result is crisis and tragedy, the revelation of a terrible secret, the convergence of the villagers upon the house, and a spectacular unleashing of collective spite. The sisters are propelled further into seclusion and solipsism, abandoning "time and the orderly pattern of our old days" in favor of an ever-narrowing circuit of ritual and shadow. They have themselves become talismans, to be alternately demonized and propitiated, darkly, with gifts. Jackson's novel emerges less as a study in eccentricity and more -- like some of her other fictions -- as a powerful critique of the anxious, ruthless processes involved in the maintenance of normality itself. "Poor strangers," says Merricat contentedly at last, studying trespassers from the darkness behind the barricaded Blackwood windows. "They have so much to be afraid of."

Definitely an interesting read, but like Jackson's other work seems to be that I've read, it's very bare bones in terms of plot, even for a short book. I feel as if it gave us a bit more it would have been far more interesting. What I mean is instead of developing the plot points, the author leaves them as statements. The atmosphere was chilling and the character study was fascinating. I found myself wanting to read it more.

Doppoetry I'm sure it was on purpose but I do wish this felt a bit more fleshed out in the long run. I think that would have actually improved the atmosphere as well, making it darker, delving deeper, and wallowing in the plot points instead of leaving them as is. 1w
TieDyeDude Thanks for the review. I was planning on reading this in October; I'll have a better idea of what to expect. 6d
Doppoetry @TieDyeDude yeah! I went into it expecting more but the book mostly consists of inner dialogue. Very interesting to read but leaves you wanting more. 6d

This novel is...bizarre, which is, at times, delightful and, at other times, very disconcerting. Pretty much what I expected from Shirley Jackson.

My second Shirley Jackson and this one was even better than The Haunting of Hill House. The Blackwood girls live with their uncle in their big, family home, shunned by the town because of suspicions of poisoning the rest of their family. Their lives revolve around mealtimes and ritual. Told from the perspective of the youngest sister, Merricat, she is methodical, has a unique view of the world, and protects the house and her sister (👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻)

i.z.booknook using talismans. This book was so engrossing, with the interesting views of the characters and the strained and complex relationships both with each other and the rest of the town. A very gothic feel, with the large house and the family living isolated, on the fringes of the town and other society, every inch of the book dripping with superstition and paranoia. I immediately wanted to read it again as soon as I finished it. 8mo

A cautious pick - as weird as people say but not nearly as spooky as I was expecting. More like intense melancholia.

This is a reread for me, and I think I loved it more this time around.

Shirley Jackson is a goddess of her craft, and the way she spins a story, building the atmosphere and suspense, is pure perfection.

The dysfunction of this family and the relationship between the sisters makes this a great read that will mess with your head in all the best ways.

Could only be described as creepy in a whimsical way. Kinda boring and I did expect something scarier or spookier to happen bc of the creepy cover. But I liked the relationship between the sisters, it redeemed the book for me

This is a great read, quite creepy and chilling. The sisters Constance and Mary Katherine are both great characters. From reading it feels like Mary Katherine is 12 or 13, but she is 18, I think. The sinister feelings of the villagers to the Blackwood family are great, and the cover really tells you all you need to know about it. This is my second Shirley Jackson book and definitely will read more.

Perfect Halloween reading. Great writing ensures a sense of something sinister on its way, a constant building of ominous energy. The ending was unexpected but it wasn‘t the explosive conclusion I think it deserved. 7/10

Another haunting story where the house is an integral part (character) of the story. Merricat and Constance are bigger introverts than I am! #whoknew And, to top it off, one's a murderer! Or is she? The stuff that hauntings are made for.“

Favorite Quote: “I'm going to put death in all their food and watch them die.“

This was my first time reading this classic horror. It was very creepy and atmospheric. Merricat's narration is unnerving as she describes the life she lives with her sister and uncle after the rest of her family was poisoned years ago and the villager's reaction to their presence.

🌟🌟 I have always loved Shirley Jackson‘s style is dark and atmospheric much like her other books. I found Merricat an interesting character study in someone who suffers from mental health from abuse. The reactions from the townsfolk who were really the true monsters here was appalling. That‘s is where the true horror lies in this reading.

However this one didn‘t drop the jaw as her other books have for me.

Perfectly written story. There was a tension throughout the story (what will happen next) and a creepiness, not scary but creepy - Merricat and Constance and Uncle are a family that loves one another but must work around each others psychological issues (see below for the rest)

bthegood Cousin Charles is unkind and has no idea how tight their world is and his aim to break into that world for money cannot be successful due to that, the towns people (even their friends) are cold, cruel and ignorant of how to deal with women with mental health issues - I listened to this (audiobook) and it was fantastic - could not stop listening - just a very good story!! 2y
AnnR So glad you liked the story and the audio version! This is one of the books I'm considering listening to in October. As a comparison, have you read The Haunting of House Hill? (I haven't read any books by Jackson yet.) 2y
bthegood @Ann_Reads yes - I read Haunting of Hill House and liked it but I liked this one better - I really liked the audiobook too - I hope you enjoy it (not long about 6 hours I think). 🙂 2y
