I‘ve been switching back and forth from audiobook to PB, and I prefer the audio. Mostly because the narrator, at 1.25 speed, sounds very like Brent Spiner and I am hella enjoying imaging that it‘s Data, describing an ancient civilization on a distant planet. 😄

Book group read. Woodard makes a persuasive argument that America is not one but 11 nations, all with different values and characters. Really, really interesting, and explains why we continue to be so divided on so many things. Fascinating.

Also, I would love to know how my copy of this book made it‘s way from a public library on the “Left Coast” to a donation bin in “Yankeedom” (to use the terms the author coins) where I picked it up!

I was shopping & my eye caught on Yankee magazine & I felt really nostalgic & sad as the reality that the holidays will be very different this year. I love New England all year but especially this season.

The Appalachian borderlanders believed in individuals over government. Supposedly they sharpened their nails and heated them over candles in order to fight better - to dig out people's eyes better!

This book comes up in conversation often, years after I read it. We aren't just North vs. South, Liberals vs. Conservatives. It's much more complex than that. Read this book.

My library hold for this came in. I think this is going to be my lunch read for the next couple of weeks because I think smaller chunks will help me understand and remember the arguments better.

It's an enlightening read, for sure, and one that make any American rethink their place in the country; it's also very dry, and, since the election of 2016, miserably depressing.

Explains a lot how different we can be....especially now

This lil' NPR blurb definitely captures the post-election mourning and fiery #overit posts that I've seen recently. All of us here know the healing, wisdom, and sense of empowerment that books can provide, so I for one am diving straight into diverse, compassionate reading. Ideally that will express my current dismay and frustration AND allow me to engage with the world in a new way.

Given the happenings in this election, I've become very interested in how blocks of voting developed historically, and the different cultural groups that comprise the United States. Have not started reading this one yet, but it looks like it explores exactly what I'm looking for.

A different (and thought provoking) way to look at the US!

Very enlightening and interesting, and I feel like it explains a lot. I have found myself talking about this book for days since I have finished reading it. I recommend for everyone, whether you like history or not.
